Storytelling through the art of ceramics
Taking product photos for my small ceramics business
All in a days work of having to juggle multiple hats for your dreams and ambitions 😭 Lol I’m tired, very tired, but I’m also having fun! When I’m working on ceramics or any if the other 1000 creative things that call my heart it never really feels like work. More like just something I should be doing to get the things that I want

Thank you Asant. I have been to the Forbidden City twice and never was able to visit the ceramic hall. I collect Chinese antique porcelain, so seeing the best of the best was fantastic. Your narration was great as well.😊😊
Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you could enjoy the video. Lol one of my main goals when I visited the Forbidden City was seeing the ceramic gallery. I spent so much time trying to find it and then finally looking at all the pieces that I didn't get a lot of time to see much else 😭 I can't wait to visit again so I can take my time exploring the palace
Lol! Your videos are always so hilarious and relatable. Kudos on the bravery to try these challenges and share it warts and all for everyone! It inspires me to try this challenge. Maybe try to throw as tall as possible with 1lb, 2lb, etc. All the way up to 5lb or more.
Thank you for tuning in! Lol I'm happy my experience can be enjoyable and relatable! Every throwing session can't always be a smooth one 😭

lolol thank you for watching til the end 😭💕 I actually posted some shorts of my first couple of pieces. Lol my very first piece on the wheel was a fail 🤣 but i'm getting back into the groove of things!
Think again about moving the studio to the garage. Install air filters in your studio and bedroom to get an idea of what you are asking your lungs to do. Your floors are beautiful. Protect them by lining them with heavy plastic and another floor covering on top. Tape the drywall board edges to prevent contamination of your clay. Clay is microscopicly small. It will stay in the air and float everywhere in your house.
Thank you for watching. I have an air filter in the room. That was actually what was in one of the boxes in the room. I've been thinking about setting up in the garage as i grow out of this space, but the garage will probably be freezing in the fall/winter which will cost a decent sum to mitigate that problem, spiders, and little access to good sunlight.
how was this 5 hours ago🧍♀️ and like no likes or comments this is so cool

Thanks for taking us on this museum trip with you! Great inspiration! With regards to working on pieces for a long time without them drying out, I recommend looking into damp boxes (the ones that have plaster at the bottom). I recently made and started using one, and my pots I threw months ago were still very moist (too wet to trim even) months later.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you could enjoy the video! 💕 For me, it's not really a case of keeping the piece damp in between sessions but more so stopping the cracking during the session while I'm working. Like when I'm shaping/sculpting a piece, I'm trying to keep it moist while i'm working so i can move and shape it. But as you do that, there is a different in moisture on the outside of the piece and on the inside of the piece that cause the cracks while working. That's what i'm trying to mitigate
You did a good job. I noticed some rough spots. Just a few. A bunch of frustration can be spared if you watch out for these things: 0:27 Try to place your clay in the direct center here, before you add water or even start to spin the wheel. Run a finger around the very bottom to seal it off. If you don't, then the water used for centering will go under the lump of clay and release it. That's what happened to you at first. You want a gumdrop shape to start, rather than a sphere. 1:14 The lump of clay wasn't fully sealed until this moment. Ideally you want it to be well before adding water and trying to center. You'll see many potters slap it with their hands and manually spin the wheel with the lump itself. A bit of a pre-centering move. 4:15 The walls began to go off center on this pull. When you see it start to wobble, pinch the rim with your left hand and push down on it with your right index finger. Hold steady as you compress the walls. They will tend to re-center. That way you can recover if it tries to go off. This is important because even small degrees of being out of center can get much more pronounced later on, if they aren't corrected immediately. You dealt with it well, but I do have one trick to mention. 5:20 When it gets this wobbly, sometimes you can use a long wood rib on the outer wall. Compress the wobble against the rib from the inside with your left hand. This also helps if the wall ever twists and ripples. You can undo them. 6:26 On this pull and some of the others, take note of the little chunks of clay that are tearing off the cylinder along the way. They fall off into the splash pan. This clay should be lifted up instead of torn away. It is difficult to explain what is happening here. I'll try. You have to leave enough of a gap, space between your inside and outside fingers in order to make a channel which forces the clay to move. If instead you pinch the walls too hard between your inside and outside fingers, the clay has nowhere to go and so it rips off. It doesn't move up. When you have a moment to watch an instructor do a pull, look carefully at their inside hand position. Ask them to show you. The left hand pushes out a buldge of clay that the right hand lifts. Such a subtle, tricky concept. If you find yourself pinching up, rather than pulling up - it does still work, just not as effectively. Something important to master if you want to pull tall cylinders. The shape you made is really difficult, and completed well. I hope you don't mind my sharing these thoughts and that they are helpful.
Thank you for your insights. Will keep them in mind!
You are very welcome. I worried a little that maybe my comment sounded too critical, and whether or not to share it. But I've struggled through all of the same things and never had any kind of instruction. If any of it helps or saves you from frustration then I'm glad. Since I last wrote, a video I'd thought was lost for good ended up recommended again. It covers the part where I mentioned clay tearing off walls rather than pulling. I'd wanted to share it before but couldn't remember the exact clip. Trust me. Search for this title: "Improving your pulling, POV Pottery 16" This was the best explanation I've ever come across for how to deal with that issue. It immediate stopped happening. @@Asantceramics
@@davezad No worries; It's good to help improve process. I've been a bit busy, tired, and I haven't been able to get on the wheel as much as i'd like, so when I do get on the wheel I'd like to get better to make the most of my time. That video was great! My mind when I saw the breakdown of why the clay pulls off 🤯 I'm definitely going to be thinking about that the next time I throw. Thanks for sharing it! I feel like sometimes because of the angle we're positioned by the wheel, it can be hard to get a a good visual perspective of why thing are happening, but then when you see it from another angle, things start to click. Recording myself helps a lot with this
explain your process throughout the vid keep going
Ok, will do! Also, thanks for watching!
Surprised you are so knowledgeable 🎉
Thank you for watching! I love to learn, and the pieces and information displayed at the museum gave a me a nice start to have fun doing some research!
That was an amazing trip into the history of ceramics and pottery. Amazing composition Nicole ❤
Thank you so much for giving the video a watch Britto! ❤💕
Thank you for sharing. There are also Ulsan for Onggi village and Ye’s park near Ichon worth visit if you are into Korean ceramic.
Thank you so much for watching! I was hoping to stop by Ulsan when I was in Busan but didn’t get the chance to go. I have a lot of bases to touch the next time I’m in Korea.
Can you tell us what kind of clay you use? So pretty
Thank you! It’s a red stoneware with manganese that adds a nice speckle after glaze firing. It’s that pretty pinkish color after a bisque fire, but it turns brownish after a glaze fire
What model pottery wheel do you use?
I use a Brent throwing wheel
It's amazing to think about that you are continuing a human tradition, making ceramics, that goes back tens of thousands of years. Great job on fighting that clay til it got to where you wanted it!
I was so anxious with how close your hair got to the clay in the beginning lol Edit: Also the design and texture on the mugs is sick as hell I love that!
Thank you for watching! Lolol I always take it for granted when I throw with short hair and don’t tuck my hair away. I forget that the hair can still get in my piece if I get up close enough 😭
I’m currently in the process of mug making for Christmas gifts!! I love the way yours turned out, such a relaxing video <3

That is so cute! I was at pottery class yesterday and am already missing it! Think I am addicted to throwing! 😂
Thank you! Lol I’m so addicted to throwing! I could throw for really long periods of time if my body and time permitted 😭
That’s a large lump of clay! Lovely work! I love working with porcelain.
Wosh
Im so glad to see your process. Im a new potter. Watching you learning while you work and telling us your thinking and letting us see your fails helps me . I know i will have frequent and worse fails as i learn but you give me the patience to keep on going and learning.
Thank you for watching Cynthia! I’m so happy this video could be helpful for you. And one thing to note is there’s not too much at stake when making mistakes while working with clay; as long as the clay isn’t bisque fired you can always wedge it back up and try again!
I kinda think it was unique and beautiful after the collapse. I know that's not your style of art, but it could have been an interesting and unique piece
Yes. I think it could’ve been an interesting piece too. I usually do like leaving things as beautiful accidents, but on this day I had a very specific goal in mind. So my tunnel vision would not let me stop there 😭
Next time have the bottom down on the table, flip the top onto the top of it . Hope you salvaged it! Looked like a nice price overall
But the bottom portion has a closed bottom so it would make it impossible to blend the seem together on the inside and outside
I planned on adding another section on top for a neck. I have a video of the process on my page. I was able to kind of save it. I also tried to fix it a lil bit more during the trimming stage. I actually just glazed the piece yesterday, so fingers crossed that the final piece comes out ok 😩🤞🏾
Oh, suck! Were you able to try again?
Yes! I have a video of the whole process on my page. By the end of the video it was a bit deformed, but I got it together. I was even able to save it a bit more later during the trimming stage. I actually just glazed the piece yesterday, so fingers crossed that the final piece comes out ok 😭🤞🏾
I’d do it the other way around and then flip it and just slab a bottom on
But the bottom portion has a closed bottom so it would make it impossible to blend the seem together on the inside and outside
Although the bottom piece was narrower than the top piece it’s actually had more stability than the top piece. Plus, I was planning to add a narrower neck on top of the second piece, so I wouldn’t have been able to do it that way. But it’s deff an interesting solution
You rock girl! It takes a strong person to publish their trials and tribulations while learning. After the first attempt collapsed I thought you were going to turn the base into a raggedy topped vase which would have been cool. But no, you pushed on toward your goal and I think learned a few more lessons in the process. Keep trying and one day you will have a 5' piece, and then 6', and after that the sky is the limit.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really love process. I love learning about them and finding ways to improve. Documenting my process has really been a key part in helping me improve, and I hope by sharing my process it can help others too. Thank you so much for watching and engaging! 💕 hopefully sometime in the not too far future I can post a successful 6’ piece 😁
