EverQuest Ambience - Journey Through Norrath
Enjoy this musical journey through the original continents of EverQuest! The Norrath continents of Odus, Antonica, and Faydwer are full of incredible music at various locations. This video project was an attempt to discover all of these locations, no matter how remote, and compile them. If a location had music, a screenshot was taken, and the accompanying music was added. Some locations used the same music as others, so you'll hear a few tracks repeat. Some of the music is very short, while others are a few minutes long. I even made a stop at Boomba the Big in Freeport so I could have an excuse to add the merchant audio. Where possible (which is all but one audio file), the original MIDI files were used for the audio rather than the later MP3 versions.
This project originally started as a "musical nostalgia run from Qeynos to Freeport," and would play any music encountered during the journey (along with a screenshot of that location). That idea evolved over time to include every location I could find with music in the original three continents. So instead of a "Qeynos to Freeport" run, it is a "Toxxulia Forest to Kelethin" run, with a truckload of detours to include any other music found throughout Norrath.
It took a few months to slowly chip away at this project, and during that time, I had the pleasure of visiting areas of Norrath I'd never been to before, even after years of playing EverQuest. I tried to be as thorough as possible, and I think I got them all. But even if I missed a couple, I still hope you enjoy this video!
The screenshots were taking from Project 1999.
Edit: I've added chapters to this video so you can easily see where the music changes. For the most part, the actual file names from EverQuest were used. That means that file name will be shown, even if it has a specific location in the name, no matter where it was used in Norrath. There are also a few locations where no audio was found within the game files, so recordings made from the game itself. These files were named based on where they were recorded, and in one instance where it was used in multiple locations, one location was selected.

I got really sick with the flu back in May of 1999 and my boss allowed me to combine vacation days and paid medical days plus an extra paid week I had accrued due to having a very high work performance into nearly 30 days of paid time off. My mother came to stay with me to help around while I recuperated. I'm not going to lie, it was one of the best "vacations" I've ever had, even with the high fevers and body aches. Nothing beats eating mom's chicken soup wrapped in a cozy blanket while playing an amazing MMO. I almost felt like I was back in middle school. :D I vividly remember at one point during the worst of the flu falling asleep to the sound the snowstorm near Halas when my druid went to pick up a barbarian friend and she accidentally dc'd (Garila the barb from Fennin Ro, hope life as been good to you). I was probably eventually booted from the server myself for being afk but I swear that snowstorm must've inserted itself into my fever dream because I remember dreaming I was in EQ in person and being lost in the snow for what felt like hours.

This could use a little work - it wasn't nonstop bug/frog noises - there was also quiet with a whistle sound every so often. The Feerrott was a terrible leveling zone - probably one of the worst. Poor mob density, high level lizard camps all around, Cazic Thule was high lvl But it was my leveling zone. Ran around in the dark jungle fighting yellow spiderlings, bats, tadpoles, and the occasional lizardman. Hop over to Innothule Swamp and hang out with some Troll friends and kill gators/frogs, or take on the zombies/skeletons and eventually move into Rathe Mnts (also another bleh leveling zone)

I played World of Warcraft for much longer than I played EQ, but I played EQ during high school from 1999-2003. I never had the sense of wonder and amazement in WoW that I did with EQ. Nowhere close. My family didn't have a lot of money so it was a huge deal when we finally got dial-up in '99. Also the game had a subscription fee which was a bonkers concept at the time and I don't remember there being a free trial, but I was doing extra chores to earn that sub fee. Chores were not an option in our house, and you did not get paid to do them. Coming up with shit to do that was worth $25 to my parents was insanely hard, because anything that should done was delegated to one of us already. I got them to agree to let me vacuum and clean their cars. The quality of my EQ experience playing on a dial-up connection was utter dogshit lol, but it didn't matter because I was blown away by the basic premise of the game. Seeing a character dart across the screen (freeze, then dart some more, then freeze lol, gg 56K) and knowing that was another human somewhere on the planet...WOW. I still get goosebumps just transporting myself to that moment when I experienced it for the very first time. Obviously it's completely trivial in today's atmosphere, but I was also one of those kids who hit the ground running in AOL, sending chain letters asking people to respond back with their location lol. My amazement with EQ was in unison with my amazement over the internet. I only put up with dial-up because I was so in love with the experience and at the time I didn't think anything better existed. Seeing all the zones like in the OP is mind-blowing because I could never pan my camera that high without freezing up my computer. I made particle effects practically invisible bcause it seemed like two flashing balls of light would fry my graphics card. Zoning into another area meant hitting the load screen, going upstairs, using the bathroom, making some food, playing with the dogs, then coming back downstairs and MAYBE finish loading in after another minute. It seriously took forever. Also, the rage that would be induced when I zoned over and the asshole game left my character FACING the loading area. Some areas it was nearly impossible to tell, so I move forward an inch and *BOOM* loading....

I was a young adult starting a career in IT in 1999. So a different viewpoint than you and not as much financial struggle. I was making the equiv of today's 100k between 1999 and 2003. I had a desktop, and a laptop. Both had dual 56k modems, double the speed and redundancy. I had three phone lines. 1 for calls. 2 for dial up so that I would not get disconnects from phone calls OR from network failure. Both modems had to go down before I DC'ed. 2 ISP accounts (at the company I worked for, they were free) one for each phone line. It was still dogshit disconnected from the server side. Long loads times but I made sure I had the best EQ I could have. I had two accounts, one for my druid and one for my necro/monk mains. I felt the same wonder and desire that you did I just a little more means. I still do think no game has been designed to capture that same Social experience and I still play EQ. I am on the TLP's every year they release. Im playing Quarm atm. Google it.

My favorite memories was sitting at the gates of Qeynos and watching random folks, some in cloth armor and some in fine steel, running off into the distance and wondering what adventures they were on their way to. No better feeling than seeing some of those same folks months later more powerful than ever boasting about their epic groups, what they achieved, and what they heard whispers/rumors about juuuuuust over that next mountain or river.
