I played World of Warcraft for much longer than I played EQ, but I played EQ during high school from 1999-2003. I never had the sense of wonder and amazement in WoW that I did with EQ. Nowhere close. My family didn't have a lot of money so it was a huge deal when we finally got dial-up in '99. Also the game had a subscription fee which was a bonkers concept at the time and I don't remember there being a free trial, but I was doing extra chores to earn that sub fee. Chores were not an option in our house, and you did not get paid to do them. Coming up with shit to do that was worth $25 to my parents was insanely hard, because anything that should done was delegated to one of us already. I got them to agree to let me vacuum and clean their cars.
The quality of my EQ experience playing on a dial-up connection was utter dogshit lol, but it didn't matter because I was blown away by the basic premise of the game. Seeing a character dart across the screen (freeze, then dart some more, then freeze lol, gg 56K) and knowing that was another human somewhere on the planet...WOW. I still get goosebumps just transporting myself to that moment when I experienced it for the very first time. Obviously it's completely trivial in today's atmosphere, but I was also one of those kids who hit the ground running in AOL, sending chain letters asking people to respond back with their location lol. My amazement with EQ was in unison with my amazement over the internet.
I only put up with dial-up because I was so in love with the experience and at the time I didn't think anything better existed. Seeing all the zones like in the OP is mind-blowing because I could never pan my camera that high without freezing up my computer. I made particle effects practically invisible bcause it seemed like two flashing balls of light would fry my graphics card. Zoning into another area meant hitting the load screen, going upstairs, using the bathroom, making some food, playing with the dogs, then coming back downstairs and MAYBE finish loading in after another minute. It seriously took forever. Also, the rage that would be induced when I zoned over and the asshole game left my character FACING the loading area. Some areas it was nearly impossible to tell, so I move forward an inch and *BOOM* loading....

I was a young adult starting a career in IT in 1999. So a different viewpoint than you and not as much financial struggle. I was making the equiv of today's 100k between 1999 and 2003. I had a desktop, and a laptop. Both had dual 56k modems, double the speed and redundancy. I had three phone lines. 1 for calls. 2 for dial up so that I would not get disconnects from phone calls OR from network failure. Both modems had to go down before I DC'ed. 2 ISP accounts (at the company I worked for, they were free) one for each phone line. It was still dogshit disconnected from the server side. Long loads times but I made sure I had the best EQ I could have. I had two accounts, one for my druid and one for my necro/monk mains. I felt the same wonder and desire that you did I just a little more means. I still do think no game has been designed to capture that same Social experience and I still play EQ. I am on the TLP's every year they release. Im playing Quarm atm. Google it.

Just found this video, so many emotions. People who played the original EQ circa 1999/2000 know exactly where I'm at right now. It was a truly magical time, never to be duplicated. As pathetic as it might sound, I'd give anything to time-warp back to those days and experience it one more time.

My favorite memories was sitting at the gates of Qeynos and watching random folks, some in cloth armor and some in fine steel, running off into the distance and wondering what adventures they were on their way to. No better feeling than seeing some of those same folks months later more powerful than ever boasting about their epic groups, what they achieved, and what they heard whispers/rumors about juuuuuust over that next mountain or river.
