Ep 066 - Thyroid Meds and Bone Loss
A major study made headlines when it linked America’s second-most commonly prescribed drug in older adults, Levothyroxine (a thyroid medication), is linked to bone loss and ultimately, osteoporosis, a debilitating bone disease. Should everyone stop taking this medicaiton immediately? We discuss the study and what it actually means for those dealing with low functioning thyroid.
Plus, one of our listeners wanted to know if she could save money by taking out Daily Essentials multivitamin instead of six individual supplements. Saving money is always good, but will the results be the same? Find out in this episode!

Ep 038 - Smartwatch Health Metrics Worth Tracking
What was not discussed is the why - why people are overeating. In addition to free gym membership, perhaps free counseling for eating disorders would be beneficial. I know of one woman who had two bariatric surgeries - never figured out why she ate. How about those who lose weight and then gain it back? There's another leg to this discussion.
Excellent point! The behavioral and psychological component to how and why we eat is certainly fertile ground for a conversation. From the examples you mentioned, what do you think are the primary reasons?
@@GenerationHealthShow For context, I am 72 years old. I think loss of community (including the new Google Gemini who appears able to hold conversations so that our children don't have to reach out to 'real' people - do you know that kids have asked Facebook what they should be when they grow up???), demonization of the obese (too often causing them to avoid social interactions), ease and low cost of processed foods (you brought that up on the video), for so many the feelings of failure and that it's too late to make changes and that they'll never lose weight, ignorance of how the food industry has specifically targeted the feel-good centers of our brain to make us want more to the point of addiction, ignorance of how our bodies process foods and how the foods we eat cause negative chain reactions in our body processes. For me, food is my drug of choice. Long hours of work, a divorce, caring for my aging mother - a perfect storm for me to eat and I did. I have 75 pounds to lose. I'm starting to get the whole picture of my life. My way out of my mess is timed interval eating - I allow myself an eating window ranging from 4 to 6 hours and I fast the rest of the time. I've had my health DNA done and so am using that to help me drill down to eating the foods that work with my body (referencing your post on the newest Nobel Prize winners) and what exercise works best for me. Our medical field is stuck in the mud that says one thing should work for everyone. Personalized care based on individual DNA is the answer, in my opinion. Additionally, the food industry has to be called out on their complicity for creating food addicts. As you said, it's not just the food dyes or the ingredients that aren't allowed in Europe (although there might be something there) that are the culprit. Those who have never been addicted to sugar (and those foods that quickly turn to sugar) don't understand. They indeed think an obese person is just lazy with no will power or self-control. However, the food industry knows exactly what they are doing down to how much of a crunch each potato chip should have or how creamy that particularly candy bar needs to be. They are seeking to create addicts to consume their foods although they would loudly rail against such words. It can be said, though, that they are determined to sell their products with no regard to the health of the general populace. They need to be held accountable just like the cigarette industry and alcohol industry. As you said, there is no healthy version of Cheetos. If you asked me where I would start, I'm not sure I would know. Most overweight people isolate themselves and then need comfort for being alone and turn to food - how to get those flower petals to open out instead of curling inward. It would be helpful to have more discussion on food disorders and how to overcome them and where to go to get help. It would be helpful to start chipping away at the stigma of obesity. It would be helpful to engage the food industry in the discussion of how to make food that our bodies can process. It would be helpful if the answer wasn't in drugs, but rather giving the obese a sense of empowerment (without using drugs). I liken Ozempic, Wegovy, and the other semaglutides to statins. High cholesterol more often than not can be managed by diet and weight management. Diabetes more often than not can be managed by diet and weight management. But it seems that people would rather take a drug than take an action that would require any sacrifices or changes - back to the 'I want to lose weight so that I can eat my favorite foods again.' I'm on a couple of Facebook group pages and I'm dismayed that people think they need to feel defensive about using these drugs. I've seen posts that said, "I'm losing the weight on my own (meaning sans drugs)" as if using Ozempic or Wegovy is a cop out. Just do what you need to do to get hold of the weight issue. People can be so ugly to each other. Makes my heart hurt. Long post, I know, but I tried not to ramble. I would love to think other folks would join in the discussion.
1yrs ago My 18 y/o grandson experienced at his dorm for the 1st time 2 consecutive seizure. He woke up badly bruised to his face and taken by his football coach to the hospital near the college where he had recently started school. Later, he. came home and had a neuro assessment and placed on mellar, now 1000mg/d. After hearing what great calming ingredients ESSENTIAL SLEEP Hhas to induce sleep, I thought How could he benefit from a more natural supplement like ESSENTIAL SLEEP to subdue potential future hyperactivity of neuron firing? He hasn't had anthe episodes, I imagine due to a stable therapeutic level. Thank you for your labor of love in this much needed field of self care.
Myrna, that's great to hear! Thank you so much! Please feel free to leave that as a review on the product page on our site!
Truly caused by hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, it is literally caused by electrolyte imbalances. Not saying it’s the ONLY cause, but these imbalances surely cause issues. RN speaking from hands-on experience.

If you think *this* is bad, you should hear what we have to say about cholesterol!
And why, does a spoon of mustard help stop it.
Never heard that one before! Maybe because you have to walk to the fridge to get it, so you're stretching out the muscle on the way? In your experience, how quickly does it help?
@@GenerationHealthShow as a life long night cramper, I've tried every cure there is. But a tsp of mustard will release a cramp within a couple of minutes. Doctor says he thinks it causes the brain to resets due to the shock of the mustard.
That’s similar to what I do, Tyler. Facing the choice a yummy treat I say, not yet, another day😊 Thx to the 4 of you for the Work you do to put this program together ❤️
Well, thanks! Now I HAVE to be good... for one more day ;)
No difference in risk reduction, such as??
It's a teaser! You gotta watch the episode for details! But since you took the time to ask, it's related to ASCVD risk and "weekend warriors" that do all of their exercising in just two days rather than the typical weekly spread.
Why would a walking talking GMO care if they were consuming GMOs?
... I don't follow.
@@GenerationHealthShow Is my reply being censored, I can not see it. I hate YT.
No clue. But I certainly understand the feeling. The strikes we've received on our other channel mean we absolutely cannot cover certain topics if we want to keep the show online. *sigh*
Well, why are you not talking about the mRNA jabs? Were you duped? Why worry about it if you already turned yourself into a GMO? The mRNA jabs are gene therapy. By definition, any organism that has had any form of gene therapy is a GMO.
Is this the missing comment? Regardless, you found one of the no-no topics that can get us in trouble. Well done! I see what you're driving at, but mRNA doesn't alter DNA. That's not to say it's without risk... just not this PARTICULAR risk.
This was interesting… my AIC 5 years ago was 6.5, Triglycerides were 450.. drs were wanting to put me on a slew of meds. An integrative PA friend help me get control of those numbers.. she advised that if I got control of the glucose issue, that the numbers should all come down as well. I was only maybe 15-20lbs over ideal weight, and middle age female. She advised getting rid of processed food, and added sugar, as well as ‘carby’ foods in my diet. I followed her advice and lowered those numbers substantially, though still in prediabetic numbers. The clincher for me was a Pharmacist who also did hormone testing etc, was able to hook me up with a CGM. I used one for a few months and it was exactly what I needed to show me exactly how bad the wrong foods were affecting my body! She couldn’t keep getting me that monitor without a prescription, which my doctors would not prescribe for me unless I was fully diabetic. I have searched for ways to get one again, as it keeps me motivated and on track! I do have a traditional glucose meter, but I hate the constant jabbing! I’m so happy this will be now available for people like myself to be able to keep it ‘in check’! As for the ‘healthy banana’ or whole grain breads, oatmeal etc?? They all cause blood sugar spikes for me! My goal is to keep it as level as possible. BTW… getting control of my AIC, has also brought my triglycerides and all into the normal range!! It CAN be done! (I’m 60!) Thank you for covering this subject.. will follow your channel!
Congratulations! And that's great to hear! It sounds like it was the right tool at the right time and helped you to make a bunch of wise changes. WELL DONE!
@@GenerationHealthShow thank you!! Key is, being aware of your numbers so if there is a problem, you know what to do!

Wow, we're swimming in a sea of poisons ☹️
It seems "pick your poison" is a bit too real.
I like corn 🌽
Butter and salt. Or Tajin.
Just because something was done for an extended period of time, doesn’t mean it’s right. Milk is baby cow’s food. There’s no other mammal in nature who as an adult drinks other mammal’s milk.
It seems like the availability of alternative "milks" in the market have made leaving dairy behind much easier... though not without its own complications.
Presentation well done and comprehensive reaserch!
Thank you!
Good info! You didn't mention the fact that the diagnosis via DEXA does NOT indicate bone strength nor the fact that the DEXA is geared towards average boned women and small boned and large are not always diagnosed properly. There's also another test that does not use radiation called REMS. It's proving to be more accurate since it also measures bone strength.
Thanks, Beverly! We'll look into that!
So good to see you all 😃
Thank you!

THANK YOU! It's a lot of work, but feedback like this is so darn encouraging!
How can you have sibo for years I don't understand that ??? Shouldn't you see what the root cause is and fix it
That's just it: SIBO *is* the root cause for many. For years, the medical community has believed things like IBS are just problems you have to live with. What we're discovering is that SIBO (literally, a massive imbalance of good/bad bacteria in the gut) is almost certainly the cause of these issues for most people. That bacterial imbalance appears to be the root cause of GI issues for a lot of folks. This is cutting-edge research and our understanding continues to evolve... but we're super excited to finally have an answer for so many!
@@GenerationHealthShow I think I got oxalate issues from sibo cause I went on all fruits and got inflamed in my body than I ate sad diet than the inflammation good away I'm just so confused. I'm waiting on my test results..kidney pain was serious.. . Do you think probiotic is not good before treatment?
@@jasminevaughn5214 First: It sounds like you might benefit from a private consultation with our nurse practitioner Joyce Gibb (Call (412) 826-9500 if you'd like to set that up). She is far better equipped to answer a specific situational question like yours. Second: In the realm of total speculation: It's possible that the large amounts of fruit gave the bad bacteria all the sugar they needed to grow even more. When they do, they put off gas that can cause serious bloating and pain. Look into a "low FODMAP" diet as a good first step. It's hard to do, but many folks experience great results from it. Probiotics are great for helping to repopulate the health bacteria in the gut, and go very well with a low FODMAP diet. If you're taking the heavy medication needed to kill the bad gut bacteria, though, they wouldn't be much help. As soon as the round of medication is over, though, a probiotic is an EXCELLENT choice to try and repopulate the gut with the good stuff it needs! We have an excellent variety on our site (askjoedimatteo.com/?s=probiotic), depending on the specifics of your situation. Again, this is just general advice. You'll DEFINITELY want to talk with a doctor that specializes in SIBO and gut health for the best, most up-to-date info as this is literally developing every month. I hope that helps!
Excellent!
Thank you!
So cool about the peanut allergy research. Are these allergy drops the same as the immunotherapy allergy drops that my allergist wanted to give my son who is allergic to pollen's?
The principle behind them is (we believe) the same. Exposing the patient to a tiny, concentrated portion of what's actually causing problems without exposing them to the allergen as a whole. That said, we're not researchers or allergists... so take it with a grain of salt.
THERE SHOULD BE NO PRIVACY FOR MINORS, A PARENT CAN BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE (MONETARILY) UNTIL A CHILD REACHES 18. IF THE PARENT IS RESPONSIBLE , THE THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING.
Tyler here - While I agree, I don't think the financial argument is the best one. In my experience, pointing out silly things *I* thought/wanted/did when I was a teen, without any notion of the mid or long-term implications, works better for establishing why parental involvement is so important. Playing devil's advocate for a moment: How do you account for a child in an unhealthy home situation where simply asking for help could result in consequences or even abuse? Laws like this one aren't put in place for healthy, engaged families but to protect kids in bad situations. If not something like this, what do you think would be a better solution? PS - THANK YOU FOR WATCHING AND COMMENTING!
I feel really bad for the patient! I had a back injury and spent the last trimester of pregnancy on partial bedrest. The back spasms would become so debilitating that I would be in tears. My doctor had to weigh the risks and benefits of any medication. I hope he finds a long term solution. Thanks for making me feel better about taking Tylenol when needed! I try to stay away from OTC meds if possible.
What helped you get past the pain?
The success of a surgery depends on the patient.
Absolutely! That was part of Dante's point!
You guys are too funny! You don’t know anything about this guy’s background while he had the surgery and what exercise is he doing to strengthen his back?
Hey @janrajek8634! You’re right about the lack of information. All we can go on is what people offer in their emails. This listener was looking for alternatives to the Tylenol he was taking. Dante’s answer is direct: There are a couple of different supplements that might help, but don’t be afraid of the Tylenol if it helps you get back to life. We were also trying to use this as a jumping-off point to provide commentary around FBSS and PSPS in general. Lots of factors can go into a treatment working or failing just like lots of factors can help someone recover. We want people to re-engage with life as much as possible. Anything that helps someone get there is worth trying!
Unreal. And to think, he was my fitness hero. SMH
You guys do,so,well in presentation, information and camaraderie. Thank you!
Wow, thank you! That's incredibly kind of you to say. Share it with everyone!
What about the retinol in skin care? e.g. anti-aging moisturizers. Would that amount be negligible?
In nearly every case, yes. The fact that they are over-the-counter means they have a pretty low amount of the active ingredient in there. The final confirmation would really depend on the specific product (so confirm with your doctor or pharmacist), but you should be ok.
I'm still not going to eat the lab grown chicken! 😂

You talk about people staying alive longer taking a statin, but I think you’re not giving us the straight up facts and how it really is shortening your life and destroying some of your organs, your memory, etc. I was hoping to get some better information from you.😢
Jan, Thank you for watching and sharing your feedback. In life and in medicine especially, there are no black or white solutions. While we certainly feel the current evidence for managing cardiovascular risk suggests earlier, more aggressive lowering of blood lipids, we also realize each individual case will provide different characteristics to weigh and examine as far as interventions are concerned! As you alluded to in your response, statins are not entirely void of risk, and our goal was to never understate this fact. The most notable risks include, muscle pain/myalgias (~5% of patients), potential increases in blood glucose that may contribute to development of T2DM, and asymptomatic elevations in liver enzymes. Rest assured, these issues are often reversible upon discontinuation of treatment, AND different options do exist for individuals who fall into these categories. These are examples of the many factors to consider when someone is a candidate for lipid lowering therapy. ASCVD is something we take very seriously, as it has already been a main topic or sub-topic of our show on multiple occasions. Like the rest of the world, we want to see LESS of it! Although stroke and heart attack seem to strike ‘out of the blue’ in primarily older populations, atherosclerosis is more of a slow-burn, insidious process that we need to be thinking about much earlier in life-in our 20s and 30s! Specifically, this lifelong exposure to apoB-marked particles (the most atherogenic ones) is one of the main factors in what drives cholesterol accumulation, plaque formation, and the ultimate damage to our vascular walls. For many people, lifestyle modification alone is not enough to move the needle to prevent further particle accumulation and to reduce the occurrence of these major events we so desperately want to see less of. THIS is where the aforementioned pharmacological treatments can play a major role. Further, there is another, less well-known type of LDL that carries its own separate risk of cardiovascular disease… Lp(a). Because circulating levels of this lipoprotein are genetically determined, we do not currently have the lifestyle or medication ‘levers’ to pull to decrease someone’s risk! This makes it THAT much more important to control one’s apoB/LDL-C, even if it means starting a lipid lowering medication earlier in life. This is an immensely complicated conversation, and we appreciate you taking the time to hear what we have learned. Please feel free to reach out to us directly at any point with more feedback or questions!
Thank you so much for discussing this topic. I have a severe case of PMDD and it has been constant struggle for me. I live a healthy lifestyle and I have tried so many treatments, but the side effects were awful. The information from your video gives me a better understanding of what I’m dealing with. Hopefully my doctor and I can create a suitable treatment plan.
It's our pleasure. If you find something that works, come back and let us know!
I know it's awkward to listen to three men talk about PMS and PMDD, but thank you for validating this experience. 👏👏
Thank you! It certainly feels that way, but it really shouldn't! These are natural processes and we need to be able to have the conversations! If we don't talk about it, how will people know?

Thank you so much! Glad to hear you've found some things that are working for you!
I was curious, are you guys taking questions? This one is not about sleep. It’s about your probiotics. I’ve been taking your probiotic essentials for years, I know they’re of good quality. My question is should I be taking different ones on occasion?
We sure are! I'll add this to our (growing) list of questions for future episodes. Feel free to email any others to us: questions@askjoedimatteo.com
Great job ! I’m sure Dr. Joe Dimattio Senior is smiling down at you guys 😊 ( might be a little bit long just my two. Cents. )
Thanks, Debra! It won't be exactly what Joe did, but hopefully we can help people in the same way!
