Discover TLAQUEPAQUE: Guadalajara's Most Colorful Neighborhood 🌮 Mexico Travel Vlog
In this Mexico travel vlog, we take you on a journey through Tlaquepaque, Guadalajara's most colorful neighborhood, where we explore the local sights, find delicious eats, and explore Mexico's cultural heritage.
Tlaquepaque, officially known as San Pedro Tlaquepaque, is a charming town located within the Guadalajara metropolitan area in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Renowned for its vibrant artistic culture and colonial-era charm, Tlaquepaque is a haven for travelers seeking a blend of traditional Mexican craftsmanship, exquisite cuisine, and festive ambiance. The town’s name is derived from the Nahuatl words "tlalli," meaning "land," and "quepaque," meaning "place above clay," reflecting its deep-rooted history in pottery and ceramics.
Tlaquepaque is one of Mexico’s premier destinations for handmade crafts and fine arts. Its workshops and galleries showcase pottery, blown glass, textiles, and other artisanal goods, many created using techniques passed down for generations.
As a cultural hub of Jalisco, Tlaquepaque is closely tied to mariachi music. It is not uncommon to hear live mariachi performances in its plazas, particularly at El Parián, a famous dining and entertainment venue. The town’s cobblestone streets and brightly painted colonial buildings offer a picturesque setting that feels like stepping back in time. Many of the buildings house art galleries, boutique shops, and cafés.
Tlaquepaque hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, including celebrations for Día de Muertos and religious processions. The colorful decorations and street performances during these events provide a truly immersive experience.
TOP ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN TLAQUEPAQUE
// El Parián de Tlaquepaque: A centerpiece of Tlaquepaque’s cultural scene, El Parián is a large open-air plaza surrounded by restaurants and bars. Here, you can savor traditional dishes like birria and tortas ahogadas while enjoying live mariachi performances. It’s the perfect spot for soaking in the lively atmosphere of the town.
// Calle Independencia: This pedestrian street is the heart of Tlaquepaque’s artisan district. Stroll along its cobblestone paths to explore boutique shops, art galleries, and craft stores. Be sure to visit shops like Galería Sergio Bustamante for surrealist sculptures and jewelry or find unique ceramics in local workshops.
// Museo Regional de la Cerámica: Learn about the history and techniques of Tlaquepaque’s renowned pottery at this museum. The exhibits feature traditional and contemporary pieces, showcasing the evolution of the craft over centuries.
// Jardin Hidalgo: This central plaza is a serene place to relax, surrounded by lush greenery and historic buildings. The plaza often hosts live music and cultural events, adding to its charm.
// Templo de San Pedro: One of the oldest landmarks in Tlaquepaque, this church is a stunning example of colonial architecture. Its tranquil interior and historic significance make it a worthwhile stop.
// Gastronomic Experiences: Food lovers will delight in Tlaquepaque’s culinary scene. Sample local specialties at traditional restaurants or explore the many street food options. Don’t miss the opportunity to try tequila and mezcal at one of the town’s cantinas.
// Workshops and Classes: Engage with Tlaquepaque’s artisan culture by participating in pottery or glass-blowing workshops. Many local artisans offer hands-on classes where you can create your own souvenirs.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR VISITING TLAQUEPAQUE
// Getting There: Tlaquepaque is easily accessible from downtown Guadalajara, approximately 20 minutes by car or taxi. Public transportation and rideshare services like Uber are also available.
// When to Visit: While Tlaquepaque is delightful year-round, visiting during festivals like Día de Muertos or Navidad adds an extra layer of magic to the experience.
Tlaquepaque’s rich cultural heritage, artistic ambiance, and welcoming atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Guadalajara. Whether you’re exploring its craft markets, indulging in its culinary delights, or simply enjoying its lively music and festivals, Tlaquepaque promises an unforgettable experience.

Great video!!
Feliz Navidad, Miguel ! All best to you, and cheers.
Merry Christmas to you too, amigo Peter! Hope everything is going well in beautiful Antigua!
Ahh, Pacifico!! Great video. On my way back in January for 5 weeks!! Like that you ventured to the north playa, I find that many vloggers only go to playa Sayulita and don't mention the beautiful and quiet playa to the north. Take care mi amigo! Oh, and I LOVE Gaby's tacos de pescado! I have them most every day for lunch! (Birria across the bridge for breakfast and then tacos al pastor at Tal Ivan for late night snacks!!) And one more, I love the walk to Carricitos, although I haven't done it in the summer heat. Makes those Pacifico go down easy though!
Hola Sam! I love hearing about your Sayulita experience! Those are some good taco tips for people watching, thanks for posting your comment 🙏 the walk to Carricitos was so hot in the summer heat, but I feel it's such a beautiful walk and the beach is amazing, so totally worth it! Hope you enjoy your 5 week stay back in paradise, amigo! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for stopping by!
Living in Mexico myself I experience that culture every time I leave my casita. I embrace it, thus I moved to Puerto Vallarta in 2017 from the western state of Washington in the USA. Salud Miguel!
Hola! I lived in Bellingham, WA for a few months. Got to see quite a bit of the state. I miss the Pacific Northwest so much. Quite a change in culture in Puerto Vallarta after your move from the US, but I'm happy to see you're taking it in stride! As always, amigo, thanks for stopping by, I always appreciate your thoughtful comments!
@@ramblingandroving Hola Miguel thank you for your replies. I want to share with you I have almost brand new GoPro 7 Silver with all the accessories I could buy when I bought it new in Spokane Best Buy. I would sell it to you at a reasonable price (not the brand new price) since I purchased it in 2016. I hope to hear back from you soon amigo! Gracias Friends call me Bill or Memo 🙂
Miguel thank you once again for an enlightening and even whimsical (to me) adventure of this vlog. Amigo Miguel, gracias. 🤟
This channel is all whimsy, hermano. Thank you so much for your support and enjoying the videos! Abrazo! 🫂
Gracias Miguel 👣 I always enjoy you down to earth videos. Please drop me line back. Would enjoy speaking or writing.
Thanks for the support and your positive feedback! I always get a kick from knowing others enjoy exploring these places as much as I do!
Three young ladies took me there for one of the most interesting day I ever spent in Mexico I know from a child to respect the people I meet in my travel. We were even invited into a Mexican house to change into our beach wear. Gracious an accomodating even when I did not speak their language , I loved the little place and will make sure to return when I make if back to PV
I love hearing travel stories like yours. The people of Tomatlán are such nice people. It does have that small town warm feeling to it. Thanks for sharing! 🙏
Thank you for this! Heading there for first time soon.. appreciate the insight! I was drawn to La Punta and now I see why :)
I'm so glad you found my video to be helpful! You'll have an amazing time in La Punta! Have a mezcal on me!
Thanks Miguel! Tlaquepaque is awesome!! I had the chance to visit this past October and highly recommended it
@@MikeS-sc5qv how was your experience? Did you get to get ice cream at Chapalita?
The experience was great! We didn’t get ice cream @!Chapalitas and now we’ve got a reason to go back! lol
Basil in ice cream? Ahh that’s a first for me.
@@brett.taylor it was insanely good!
Mexico was only a viceregal territory never a colony "colonial"
@@ezragonzalez8936 to be a viceroyalty, you have to be a colonized territory. Otherwise, we'd be talking about Spanish homelands, which México was not. The reality is that, over hundreds of years, thousands of Spaniards traveled to Mexico to settle through conquest and, later, the administration and distribution of lands by the colonial government. The viceroy answered to the Council of the Indies (a distinct administrative body), not directly to the king of Spain.
I was there this past may 2024 was ok not much snorkling but can see the same fish as the rocks. my husband did the tour and didnt see any new fish . swimming is nice, water mostly calm and clean. the movie night of the iguana was filmed here back in 1964. most of the snorkling were near the rocks on the left side of the beach. yes, those white condos are for own or for rent, mostly owned by investment companies. the beach can get crowded and yes more tourists are now coming to the area which ruins the spot. but been there done that, time to see different places, PV has become more and more crowded with tourists. takes away the beauty of the state and culture.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. It does seem like these beaches surrounding Puerto Vallarta are growing more and more commercialized and that pushes the authenticity of the local culture out.
How to get there on the top of the view of los arcos? Going there next week
this is one of the three ships that stopped Japan at midway.
The stuff of legends!
Such a cool place to swim!
The funny thing is that it seems like a beach but it's actually fresh water!
Ahh it is time for a Mexican adventure!
Bulls, rodeo, and shaky, sketchy stands. What can possibly go wrong? 🤣🤣
I’m too hungry to watch this now. Will watch later. 🌮
@@brett.taylor I hope tacos come to haunt your dreams 🌮
You do a really good job with these videos. Thanks for all the great information!
@@SlyPokerDog I appreciate your feedback! I'm glad you found this museum to be as fascinating as I did! Hope you're doing well!
Guadalajara! Thank you for such a great exploration of amazing art, architecture, history, and contemporary culture. I also loved the respect you showed while filming in each place--lowering your voice since there were other people there. So often, vloggers don't do this, but your respect for the places and people also creates a reverence for the subjects in your viewing audience. :)
I deeply appreciate your feedback! I do try to not interfere in the spaces I'm visiting unless the people there specifically want to interact with me. Often, travelers can benefit quite a bit from being flies on the wall and observing, instead of having to be the protagonist every time. I'm honored you enjoyed the video and I wholeheartedly agree with you, one must show reverence for the work of such passionate and distinguished masters!
As expected from you Miguel, excellent video. Thank you for sharing the greatness of your beautiful country. Cheers
Thank you for your kind comment, Carrie! Your enjoyment makes the work of sharing these experiences worth it!
Very soothing video.......thank you for taking us along on your day exploring the art museums. Loved the music too!
I'm glad you liked it! You would love those museums! There is just so much art in Guadalajara!
Very interesting video Miguel! And very interesting that Jacob Vilató ended up doing art as well. What’s your opinion on him? He will always be assosiated with Picasso; obviously this has many benefits but it must also be difficult to deal with.
I always think it's funny when the relatives of an artist follow in their famous uncle or parent's footsteps and it becomes a family business. I don't know much about Jacob Vilató but I'm glad I discovered him!
Needs a map.
Thank you for the feedback, Vera. I'll be sure to add more maps in the future. Cheers! 🌍
cool vid thanks
Thanks for watching, amigo! Hope you enjoyed!
Tuba was brought to Mexico by Philippine sailors a few hundred years ago.
That is super interesting! I didn't know that. Lately I've been reading and learning quite a bit about the Spanish trade with the Philippines. It's fascinating to say the least!

Great video! My husband and I are making our plans to head down soon. Your videos help keep us connected to this country we love so much.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I'm glad you and your husband like my videos! And like we say here, mi casa es tu casa!
Makes me want to pack my bags❣️ Thanks for the sights!!
I hope you do, Linda! Sayulita is a fun place to explore!! I appreciate your comment and your view as always!
Very well-presented and informative. Thank you Sir!
I appreciate your comment, señor!
How late do the city busses run? If I were to need a ride home from hotel Zone at 2am to downtown is that safe and possible with busses?
Hey amigo! If I'm not mistaken, the city buses run from the hotel zone to the downtown all night long, but they're just less frequent. In any case, I'd say that the safest way to move around is Uber (the buses are fine in general, but Uber takes you off the street quicker). As a rule of thumb, I'd avoid Cancun taxis if I could, as they have an unfortunate tendency to scam tourists. As with any Mexican city, avoid walking alone by night as much as you can.
@ramblingandroving Thank you for clarifying that Ubers are okay to use. I was under the impression that Uber use was frowned upon and risky because of the beef between taxis and Uber drivers

Glad you enjoyed it, Neal! 😊 As always, thanks for watching!
Te empecé a seguir porque estas bien guapo papi pero❤ pronto descrubi que eres todo un intelectual. Your English is at an academic fluent level, where did learn it? Were you a graduate student here in the US? Gracias por la detallada explicación sobre Dia de Muertos amigo!
Jajaja gracias por el cumplido! I mostly picked up English by traveling (a lot of which happened in the US) and reading. More than a TH-camr, I'm originally a lawyer here in Mexico, but then I turned pirate and became a writer. Most of my books I've written in English. Hope that explains the story! 😁 I've been wanting to do a video about it, now that the community is growing. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment!
@ramblingandroving That explains it. Yeah, please do a video about it when you think it's right. I graduated from the University of California Riverside with a double major in political science and Latin American studies. After that I went to Guadalajara to study an MBA at the Tec de Monterey campus GDL but I fell in love with the city and stayed in Mexico for 10 years traveling and teaching English at Berlitz, Universidad Panamericana and lastly at the Tec de Monterrey! 🤣 Para finalizar quiero que sepas que es obvio que eres un TH-camr con preparación y no otro aventurero mas del montón. Sigue adelante amigo y te deseo lo mejor. Suerte! 🥰
Love your videos! Could you scan side to side a bit slower? It's hard to see!
Heya! Thanks for watching and for your feedback, I'll make sure to be a little slower when panning so you can appreciate the view better 👍🏼 have a lovely day!
Gracias por promocionar a Barra de Navidad Jalisco
Es un placer, amigo. De verdad pase unos días muy bonitos en Barra, solo quisiera haber podido quedarme más. Abrazo!
This market looks amazing! Reminds me of a lowkey version of the SMA market. I love the Santeria booth! So fascinating what that guy was saying about the rituals!
Such a rich culture, love Mexico 🇲🇽
Truly one of the most colorful (and chaotic) countries in the world 🌍❤️ love it!
Isla mujeres?
Unfortunately, I haven't been to isla mujeres 😅 it's the one place on the whole peninsula. But I would kind of consider it to be an extension of Cancun, being so close to town. I would totally do it on a day trip from Cancun if I had time on a trip!
