AutoAtlantica
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 18 ธ.ค. 2023
Welcome to AutoAtlantica! I’m a British transplant in the United States and I will be diving into the American car market and culture. New cars, used cars, collector cars, car collections, museums and shows, I hope to cover it all.
I also have a fleet of my own automotive headaches and will cover their ongoing adventures as they undergo repairs to bring them up to snuff.
I have many years of automotive industry experience on both sides of the Atlantic, and with my work writing for a car magazine and blogs, thought a great opportunity could arise from a TH-cam channel bridging the transatlantic divide.
If you have a car or collection you would like featured on the channel, by all means get in touch! Have camera, will travel! My main coverage areas are NY to VA to OH and MI; also AZ occasionally as well as the UK.
Want to get in touch? Please email me at autoatlantica2023@gmail.com and I will respond within 24 hours.

Jaguar’s Controversial Reinvention: Thoughts from my XJ40
While I prepare to start winterising my Jaguars, I wanted to share my thoughts by putting Jaguar’s controversial rebranding announcement this week into some kind of logical perspective.

Thanks for watching, much appreciated!
I remember back in 1986 when Jaguar released a special programme on the BBC about the making of the XJ40 and all the fanfare.
First new Jaguar for a decade at the time, which is why the BBC celebrated. Many thought Jaguar would be bankrupt before it was released.
@AutoAtlantica It was a brilliant car, had two XJ40s 3.6 and 4.0 litres Sovereigns, They both were bombproof and reliable.
Id prefer a Mr2
From my point of wiew, in Sweden - Jaguar have an exclusive reputation, "traditional" design elements and are regarded a a brand with a clear heritage of british design/tech - old jag are cheap, but so are mercedes too - esp the more exclusive models. I do not think the aim at woke ppl will draw new buyers, as most younger ppl in city of Stockholm use car sharing/carpools while ppl as myself (60+ will remain a good taget yet) - I think this is as bad for jaguar as if volvo should dump their safety image - and at last, I think the woke pendulum will swing towards more "traditional" values as most of reasonable ppl with decent jobs want stability - to raise their kids and live as comfortably as possible. Not dance around in colourful dresses looking like crash test dummies. I cinncerely hope Jaguar will survive and take us into the future without forgetting their past.
There is s suspicion that this ad was intended to shock, in order for it to go viral. In that they have succeeded beyond any marketer's dreams. If that was the case, they would keep a stiff upper lip in response to the negative reactions, and then follow up with adverts featuring the cars etc.. Everyone would be interested to see what follows due to the viral spread of the initial ad. But, they didn't do that at all: instead they came out and insulted the public, calling them "vile and intolerant" for not liking the initial ad. That tone deaf response kind of blows the above theory into the weeds. Sad..
The response has been vile. Jaguar is a business, above all else. I don’t want to see the same apathy Rover executives demonstrated, and BL before it.
@@AutoAtlantica You're not making the least bit of sense. If people don't like the ad, they have all the right to do so. An awful, dystopian, perverted, ugly, tone-deaf woke ad deserves all the negatives and more. Calling people "vile" for reacting negatively is a very strong word to use. Certainly from a CEO, and if you think I'm vile as well, well, I've got you buttonholed too mate.
@ explain what you think “woke” is. The ad is simply a series of metaphors. I look forward to hearing your thoughts in your video, too. He’s not calling people “vile.” He’s referring to the responses, which by and large are vile.
Sweet video! I know a guy with a Cadillac V8 swapped fiero for sale, I just made a quick video about it if anyone's interested th-cam.com/video/7_iMjsVG7IY/w-d-xo.html
The first step in improving an automaker's relationship with it's customers is to insult them. If you believe that, then Jaguar is off to a great start. They have been so thorough in their insult that I don't see any way they can recover from it. Bye bye Jaguar, we will miss you.
It’s lost 70% of its customer base in ten years. There’s nobody to insult.
I felt strange that I wasn't offended by the ad one bit. They could have marketed change by using any formula, they just chose that formula. That's all I saw. I think you explained it in perfect business detail. They have stirred up incredible, debate, interest and anticipation, which Is ideal marketing.
Exactly.
With diminishing sales, Jaguar announces that it is going to abandon its market segment and move upmarket to compete in the Bentley and Rolls Royce luxury car market segment and double the basic price of the cheapest new Jaguar. What could possibly go wrong?
Pricing hasn’t been formally announced. Its primary target will be Lucid and Cadillac.
In 2004 I bought a second-hand 2001 X308 XJ8, a Jaguar of the Ford era, for my wife, and this car is still owned by us. Our XJ8 has been an amazingly reliable auto likely because the Ford era contributed to a generally much improved build quality compared to our prior Jaguars. We have been consistently attentive to routine maintenance over the years and that has kept our classically handsome XJ8 running beautifully to this day We both believe that Ford's ownership was a perfect answer allowing Jag to address many of the manufacturing issues especially evident in the earlier years. As much as we love Jaguar, we both believe that the new advert campaign is a fundamental error, and not a correct direction to begin its new BEV model rebranding. So we disagree with your opinion, sorry. Cheers.
I thought Ford’s ownership was excellent, but it didn’t stop the snobs of society branding them as rebadged Fords. Ford couldn’t get Jaguar into profitability, either. After all its various ownership struggles, Jaguar’s overwhelming reputation among the public at large is unreliability. Nobody is forced to agree with my opinion; I’ve presented my opinion here based on the facts of the past 58 years, knowledge of the industry, and why I think that reset is overdue. If you think otherwise, then I’d rather a case be presented rather than “I disagree but I’m not going to say why” which suggests an opinion only based upon feelings. It’s a new era; the only aspect the past should have on the future is to learn from it.
I own a 68 Sunbeam Rapier today
Good points, When the Mark X (10) hits the streets, it was rather radical compared to its predecessors ( same could be said for the XJ). Those still running around their beloved 2nd hand Mark V's etc reacting much as those today. Just like those that bit their lip when the Silver Shadow appeared. Fast forward to the XJS, OMG the horror "how could they" E Type lovers speak of it as blasphemy - yeh for Gen X it was their poster Jag. They do need to pull a cat out of the bag though. In the past 10years there's been nothing inspiring that's "poster on wall or a screen saver" material. "one day I want one of them" moment has been lacking in their product range.
The past fifty years of Jaguar’s history led to this point and too many people are overlooking it!
The XJ40 was a superbly engineered car. The styling is still beautiful.
I agree. I think it’s lasted the rest of time more than the X300 update to be honest.
I worked for Rover from 90 to 05 so the Sterling is definitely from my period. In 15 years I only once ever fancied a Rover with my staff discount of 35% & when offers were on we could get a brand new car for half price. I wanted a Rover 220 Turbo Tomcat coupe. Couldn't find 1 in any dealership in West Yorkshire as I worked for Rovers automotive Foundry in Leeds ( West Yorkshire Foundry) I found a 6 months old demonstrator but that didn't entitle me to my discount. Cars had to be in stock in any Rover dealership unregistered. 800s wasn't that bad & 600s the rest were crap.
I've got an 1989 and a 1990 myself the 89' is black and the 90' was white
Nice! Hang onto them!
That Cadillac isn't the B body Fleetwood that shared mechanicals with the Buick Roadmaster. That is the front wheel drive C body Deville fron 1989 -1993.
I know. We looked it up afterwards. I was expecting someone to point it out.
Nice finds over there - youngtimer and oldtimer Mercs, Sterling.
Fascinating to traipse around!
Nice to know someone likes the Sterling. It doesn't look in too bad a shape. Shame they wont part with it.
Yes I was bummed but if I buy one I know there’s a stash of parts close by!
We need a coyote powered Fiero GT project.
I do try and visit a few breakers while i'm on holiday in the usa, mainly looking for ford escort zx2 parts, sadly they are scarce. but i do love a good rummage around these breakers.
It’s a lot of fun, a lot like the “life is like a box of chocolates” thing. In part 2 I unearth some real rarities.
Are you the guy with the green ZX2 in the U.K.?
@@AutoAtlantica the very same 👍
@@neiliosr8if I find any ZX2 or Escort parts locally I’ll let you know.
@@AutoAtlantica that would be great thank you 👍
Well, the LeMans name has already been tarnished by 1978-1981 rebadge of an A/G - body car. So no big deal here. As for the car itself - typical 80's Korean PoS.
Fascinating find for sure. So many Italian cars, as if You're in Italy. Such a shame there were no 124 sedans/wagons.
Kid in a candy store certainly for me!!
I hate to be that guy but I got that exact same setup 😂mines two years newer and a gt fastback though
Sounds great congrats!
I'm a bit confused. Why would you use a garmin and have carplay at the same time? Just use your phone for maps
A phone relies on a cellphone network, which is sporadic in quality. A satellite navigation does not, and gets a consistent signal.
@@AutoAtlantica But your phone can just download maps and use the satallites just as well
I don’t burden my phone with downloads. My choice.
Nice video, and looks like an overall solid vehicle for its age. Better idea than the full-size camper for your needs as well. Too bad about the electrical but you seem to know your way around a fix. Good luck!
Thank you for watching! The Stow and Go system make these popular build and no-build platforms for camper conversions.
Nice car. But the hat? Dude....
I still remember the Merkur commercials, I think James Earle Jones provided the voice. I was blown away and thought they were really cool! A friend had one in NC. Americans had finally accepted that turbo fours were actually cool performance machines, thanks to Chrysler which was turbocharging everything at the time. Although, they still were not our beloved V8s, but turbo fours were selling well at the time. The jellybean styling was already a hit here after the successful introduction of the Tempo/Topaz. European car brands, from Porche to BMW, Meredes, Volvo, VW and Jaquar were selling well then. Even the French (Peugeot and Renault) were in the US at the time! So why wasn't there room for these cool cars in the US at the time? My guess is poor marketing. They probably should've just been called Fords or perhaps Mercury, rather than Merkur, which constantly had to be explained. That may have made all the difference in the world.
The Bronco Sport has been growing on me. Considering one for next vehicle.
Just got a 2025 trax 1lt, and so far, I like it. I was looking at the Mazda cx50, which is very nice. All the features i have in my trax and sticker price 24, 950. The mazda with equal features would've been for me closer to 40k. Now, I just have to see how long it lasts.
I want to do the same thing but with the Gen 1 86-91 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sables. I'd love to especially find an 86 LX Taurus wagon in red.
I’ve read books and watched many videos on the XJ-S and still learned a few new things watching your video.
Thank you for your kind words!
I ran into this guy in Richmond VA spring/early summer. I had never seen a Cricket before
Ela podia ser manual 4x4 diesel ❤🎉😊 ela tá muito bonita ❤🎉😊
Had an 88 Fiero converted to a supercharged 3800 V6. Like a go cart on steroids
Interesting video Darren. Nice to see some of the early development pictures. I have always thought it unfair that the XJS is knocked by so many and leads you to think no one likes them which isn't true. They have a big following and people really do like them. It was unfair to compare them against the e type. It wasn't an e type it was an XJS. In the mid 70's we got the SD1 Rover, Tr7, Princess, and the XJS and it was too much of a shock for many people. British cars were trying to modernise but the public weren't yet ready for them. The XJS i believe had the longest production run of any Jaguar and when the convertible was released in 1988 it lead i think in 1990 to its best sales year. I own a 1992 Facelift V12 Convertible and since buying it , it has amazed me how much attention it gets where ever i go. Strangely enough i was never keen on the look of the facelift lights until i got mine and i love it. They are the most comfortable seats i have ever had in a car and they are lovely cars. You got a bargain with yours and it been the Coupe in the USA as you said will make it rarer and a little bit more special. I saw the thumbnail and expected to see a US spec car and when you started speaking i thought you were a brit and confirmed when i looked at your homepage.👍
Jaguar development is always a great source of discussion!
Got mine a week ago I absolutely love it feels amazing to drive, looks great and is very comfy
Agreed. I love mine and I find it very satisfactory on the highway. And I have the 1.5 litre.
Fantastic! I have a 72 4 Speed sedan and I love it, I have a bunch of parts for it to get it back on the road but it does run and drive as it sits.
Have a 1994 too and love it. Thanks mate 👍
Great cars, enjoy!
