Building a Hydrofoil for a Laser Sailboat
This video is about the whole building process of a electronic Hydrofoil for a Laser sailboat.
The last video documented not to whole process. The Ruderfoil and the electronic height-regulation-system were missing.
All this was partially my graduation work from the "Gymnasium" (like highschool) and partially from the the "Nationaler Wettbewerb, Schweizer Jugend forscht" (Swiss Youth Science).
Thanks to all the people who made this project possible!

The height regulation system is not built in, therefore it's currently hard to keep the balance. Also the ruderfoil is not ready yet...

    Thanks For sharing!. Am retired electronics engr. Making a 12.5 foot SUP for paddling, sculling or sailing using extruded one inch polystyrene sheets. The blank was laminated in a simple jig using clamps to form the bow & stearn curves.. It is beautiful. Getting it ready for fiberglassing with UN & BI Rutan glass cloth. (PS i designed 32 bit 1.2GHZ com;outer boards for military stuff like the Global Hawk drone integrated mission management cpmputer (IMMC) Motorola, now NXP has the lowest power integrated host processors. 130 times the MIPS of a 1968 IBM System 360 mainframe. LOL. Get paid what you are worth and vote with your feet. ❤❤

    I must have missed something I don't see you sailing the sailboat with hydrofoil I see it being towed did it ever work?

    • @lukasreitemeier
      @lukasreitemeier 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope, you didn't. It was the plan to try it with wind, but on the two occasions I tested it, there was no wind ...and I would need at least 4 bf, because the foils are oversized due to the building materials used (cheap wood and steel).

    How did you come up with the decision for how much wing area is appropriate (relative to your boat weight and target speed)? What made you chose this specific wing profile? There are so many to chose from (e.g. as NACA numbers) ... Btw: Interesting project, especially with the successful implementation of an automated electronic stabilisation. Congratulations! _(note: I also speak german, just in case this makes answering any easier)_

    I think your main goal was the eletronic height control, could be the reason for completely disregard the KISS concept (there are already far more simple and less fail prone ways to mecanically do that), but lets put this aside, for now...at which speed have you foiled up, would you be able to reach such speed under sail? Adding lateral foils to a sailboat, you might have think in assymmetrical lift, to fight heeling forces, how would you reinforce (or completely replace) not only the spar but also, the mast's foot structure, to deal with the increased loads, without adding too much weigth? And finally, there is already on the market, a complete plug&play foil kit for Lasers but ... without Eletronic Heigth Control, for sure.

    Wow super impressive. Love how you combine electronics into it. I am in the prosess of combining two kayaks to a catamaran, and sail on it, and eventually hydrofoils. All transportable on a bike trailer for my electric fatbike. And the idea, is to chain drive my fatbike motor into the boat propeller. So it is a E-bike powered boat.

    I built Tubby Tug in the past. I belonged to a boat club and everyone was impressed. coulc.it/boat I own a 1973 Chris Craft cabin cruiser, and to tell the truth we had more fun with the Tubby than we did with our big boats. It was great working with them.

    Hi. Interesting design but you will ultimately need a foil incidence control system. Research Hook foil control to vary the angle of attack of the main foils which could be linked to some trailing flaps on the main foils. Trying to control the incidence angle of the main foils using T foil at the stern does not work successfully. Believe me, I have tried it. You need an incidence control system for the main foils which will respond to their depth of immersion and vertical loading placed upon them. Good luck.

    what servo motor did u use?

    • @lukasreitemeier
      @lukasreitemeier 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this test run only some cheap 40 kg servos from china. I expected thise to burn up and they kind of did, but they hold up 45 min just fine. (if they have to hold position under a weight, it is basicly a short circuit.. ) For longer operation a threaded rod and carriage would be better.

    It would have been much better to see more footage at the end. Very cool. Fs ? Second ord pos. control? DSP on controller or do you just run recursion in std micro? Why FG instead of carbon fibre?

    • @lukasreitemeier
      @lukasreitemeier 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are completly right, but I was on a tight budget (so no carbon) and had absolutely no time to develop the perfect controller, so it was kind of the savest cheapest way to take off once...
