The 1962 Rochester, NY runaway train 62 years later
Thanks for watching this informational video documenting the rather obscured tale of the 1962 Syracuse - Rochester runaway train incident! I apologize for the slow uploading schedule. Nowadays I have a lot less time to make these videos, as it takes a while to gather all of the information sometimes. I’ll go a little more in depth about that in my next train wreck video, hopefully releasing within the next month.
Trains. One of the most efficient ways to carry most every day items from point A to point B, and in massive quantities. With that being said, they also happen to be one of the most dangerous things on wheels. Generally speaking, trains are perfectly safe, but one out of control is an entirely different story. One young railroader would experience such danger firsthand, and it was one that he would never forget.

The 80s were certainly an exciting time in American railroading.
I was an operation lifesaver presenter . I love trains and grew up with lots of knowledge about them. Wonder how many life's I might of saved?
Excellent job on the Video. If Documentary filmmaking is not your main career then it should be. Keep up the great work.
@@mikeb3539 Thanks a lot! Will do.
I never blame amtrak for derailing on tracks they don't own, aside from crew error. They have no control over the quality of the tracks, which are often just good enough to usually not derail freights. E: And it's always a damn dump truck!
@@pootispiker2866 fair enough. It seems like Amtrak tends better to their crossings as well.
If I had a nickel for every train crash I've heard of happening in Philadelphia, i would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.
@@pootispiker2866 Hah! Well, true nevertheless. It’s crazy that it was even the same curve and all. I wonder if they’d ever try to widen it.
My friend knew this train crew well.

Many comments are from people who lived in the area when the event occurred but never heard about it. I think it's because there was no accident that whould've alerted the news media and the railroad did not report it because of the negative publicity it would generate.
@@danielebrparish4271 that’s what I was thinking. Not significant enough to publicize by news, and no reason to publicize by railroad
Rochester native (born in ‘62) I’ve never heard of this incident. Thank you
very good
We are talking "lite power" here, NOT a "train". This and that other 'lite power' video made the same mistake.
What bout the north goodman yard ,its old i think
Great video! I don't recall it at all. I was age 7 and had just left Rochester that afternoon, traveling east through Newark! The only reason I remember that is because it was a weekly ritual.
Too much back ground noise; poor voice quality made this unpleasant to listen to.

Throwing any of the engines into emergency should have stopped all units from pulling.
@@buzzpoluchi3217 I believe they were only in full service. Either way, the GP20 may have been too primitive. I’m not entirely sure.

Click bait in the title! In the UNITED STATES of AMERICA there called engineers! Not drivers
@@franklinwhite5392 putting drivers instead of engineers for those who know less about trains.

I don’t believe it’s clickbait either way, considering that a train driver & engineer are the same thing. It’s not really misleading anyone

@@FCDITZ bro took it personally 💀
@MangoTheOne 😂
I remember reading an article about this in either "Popular Science" or "Popular Mechanics" magazine.
Interesting narration but the video is almost all stock footage that has nothing to do with the event. Some of the railroads shown did not exist in 1962, The NTSB report pertains to an accident 17 years later.
@@PRR-xx2hp I know. There is no accident report so it was just an example. Also, it’s either stock footage or nothing :P

Jumping back and forth between the swaying units at 90 mph? Pulling out a thick power cable? If true; he must have had more adrenaline than blood.

11/18/24: Yes, that was me in 1962, ten years old, determined to bring the train to a halt. I still can't believe I did it. Well, thanks for the publicity. Now all my buddies at the bar will finally stop accusing me of lying!
10 years old???
@@dannyholder4675 Actually, eight, but I was big for my age ("Yes, that was me," above is a joke, son, a joke.)
1 minute and 40 seconds into the video and I'm already bewildered. Those GP20s were close to brand spanking new, WITHOUT DYNAMICS?? If a class 1 railroad today didn't have dynamic brakes on all their mainline equipment, it would be a PR disaster. The NYC just didn't care that a 240,000+ pound locomotive might not be able to stop under it's own power. No shit Penn Central imploded if this is how they operated before the merger.
@@coolawesomeepicman4513 fair point. Also the fact that they ran that train nearly to derailing above a populated area because they were worried the cost of the engines would be too much. They could’ve derailed it at the end of the yard and Gerace likely would’ve suffered only minor injuries.
Can u do the one at 0:12 Behind 4004 is 4554 & behind 4044 is bnsf 4114
@@ArgentinanGuy I’ve considered it before. Maybe one day I will.
I always thought "Runaway Train" was a great movie and was influenced by Kurosawa. To what degree I was never sure. The music and the scenery made that movie particularly fitting for the meaning of the story, what is the meaning of a man concerning what is good and what is evil. To face one's destiny bravely, as the convict did is good. At the same time to continue to inflict harm on others, as the Warden was doing, is not good and showed the Warden to be out of touch with the meaning of life. It was very satisfying to learn of the real world events that led to this great film. Thank you.
@@obliograce3551 of course and thanks for the comment
Dynamic brakes are usually required on locomotives operating in mountainous regions. Between Rochester and Chicago, the terrain is nearly flat, meaning dynamic-brake equipped locos are unnecessary.
@@ThomasWLalor true, although better safe than sorry in this case
Great work .well produced. You should do one on the Boston and Maine runaway that happened in the 80's during the strike that killed the B&M.its said that employees on strike did it in protest for the skabs that were hired to run trains.
@@timothyparker8524 I’ll look into it. Thanks for watching
Great job on the video. Do you know what mile marker the runaway stopped at, or what street? Thanks.
@@RHJ3 the milepost is unclear. Supposedly it was about 3.5 miles from the curve it would’ve derailed on.
@@MangoTheOne Hmm..... well the curve is just before the passenger station and that is about MP 371. So subtract the 3.5 miles or so and your left with 368.5 or so. That would put right about where Goodman Street Yard is, somewhere between Atlantic Ave or Main Street. I live in Rochester and visit Goodman Yard almost daily. Thanks again for the video.
@@RHJ3 no problem. Thanks for watching
