Sonetto 104 del Petrarca (Benedetto sia'l Giorno), S.158 No.1 - Franz Liszt
Franz Liszt: Tre Sonetti di Petrarca No.1 - Sonetto 104 di Petrarca "Benedetto sia'l Giorno" (First version of S.161 No.5), S.158
"Blessed be the day, the month, the year,
The season, the time, the hour, the moment,
The lovely scene, the spot where I was put in thrall
By two lovely eyes which have bound me fast.
And blessèd be the first sweet pang
I suffered when love overwhelmed me;
The bow and arrows which stung me,
And the wounds which finally pierced my heart.
Blessèd be the many voices which have echoed
When I have called Laura’s name,
The sighs and tears, the longing;
And blessèd be all those writings
In which I have spread her fame, and my thoughts,
Which stem from her and centre on her alone."
- Petrarch (1304-1374)
"Three of Petrarch’s cycle of sonnets hymning the poet’s love for the divine Laura occupied Liszt’s imagination over many decades. The best known of the works to result from this preoccupation is the second of the three piano pieces which bear Petrarch’s name in the Deuxième Année de pèlerinage. The three sonnets were first set as songs for high voice and piano in 1838/9. The piano transcriptions, which reverse the order of the first and second songs, may have been made soon after, but at any rate were complete by 1846 and published in that year. The transcriptions were revised for the Deuxième Année by 1855, and the songs were totally recomposed for low voice-and very miserable they became in tone-in 1861 (retaining the order of the piano versions). Since the later piano versions are familiar, the divergencies between these and the early piano versions will be readily audible, especially the long introduction to the second piece in the first version. But since, as with the Liebesträume, the sense of the poetry remains crucial to the understanding of the music, Petrarch’s original sonnet are given here.

Nice! Not sure if you can do this, but could you possibly look into S. 249b? I found it while leafing through Wikipedia's franz liszt composition page and literally nobody seems to talk about lmao. I found the opening harmony to be pretty striking

Yeah, sure bro, keep dreaming
What sound font do you guys use? Or is it just a default sound in synthesia?
for our previous videos (included this one) we used to use the Steinway D274 II Vintage soundfont for this one but by petition of people we had to replace the soundfont to pianoteq
Simply genius. What an underrated composition
Awesomee as always!
I don't understand this work. Is this meant to be a prelude to S.180 or is it a Prelude based on the Theme? Or is this the case of those "First version" pieces that weren't labeled properly
it is a prelude based on the theme so yeah it is likely the first version from the bach variations
These Bach transcriptions are always amazing! Can you do his 3 Sonetti del Petrarca, S.158?
well we're currently working on the 1st piece from the set, the 3rd one is already finished but the 2nd one may be the trickiest one to do because it requires voicing and several arpeggios so idk :/

What a great birthday to have, best season undoubtedly.
200 years ago, a little boy of 13 yo was learning piano with Czerny and composition with Salieri (i may be wrong, i don't remember the chronology), he would became one amoung great genius of the time, he was influenced by almost everything and everyone, knowing some europeans cultures, knowing mostly all piano repertoire, all the people he knowed composers like Czerny and Beethoven to even a young Debussy, other musicians and artists, highly inspired by religion and literature At this point i dont think my comment has any sense, but i want to say, that man was fucking amazing, is still my fav composer and i would say Happy 213 years of Liszt legacy !!!
