Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses (2nd Version) No.8 'De Profundis', S.172a - Franz Liszt
Franz Liszt: Harmonies Poétiques et Religieuses No.8 'De Profundis' (2nd Version of S.154/ Later Revised as Pensée des Morts S.173/4)
De profundis clamavi ad te Domine:
Domine exaudi vocem meam.
Fiant aures tuae intendentes
in vocem deprecationis meae.
"Prose des morts - De profundis is an extraordinary piece, as astounding as its 1834 conception as Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, and, on the whole, more original than the final version Pensée des morts. As far as the present writer can determine from the N9 Sketchbook which contains no instruction but two passages of music - one of some thirty-one bars, and another of eighteen bars, the end of which has been mutilated when the following pages were torn from the sketchbook - Liszt’s apparent plan was to substitute the two passages in the original piece (for those who have the published score of that work, bars 40-62 and bars 120-123) in order to introduce the chant De profundis, which is underlaid with the appropriate text from Psalm 130 (Vulgate 129). Liszt weaves the chant and his previous material together, in a way which he dropped in the final version which presents the chant unadorned. Thereupon he returns to the Andante religioso section of the original - material which was much altered or dropped completely in 1851. The peroration is extended, and right at the end of the second insert the rhythm of the chant returns, on a static augmented triad, and the promised G major tonality is avoided as in the original version."
(Notes by Leslie Howard)
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord:
Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive

    So... this is the only video that covers the "real" first version of Invocation. Almost all other recordings, even Howard's Complete Liszt edition, appears to have confused S.172a/1 and S.172c. By the way, may I ask where did you get the sheet music or manuscript for this version?

    • @Liszthesis
      @Liszthesis หลายเดือนก่อน

      for the original manuscript it can be found the harmonies poetiques sketchbook through the GSA website: ores.klassik-stiftung.de/ords/f?p=401:2:::::P2_ID:198868 (Page 5) some yapping here: perhaps the idea of this piece to be catalogued as S.172c may be the fact that since these first 3 pieces were published without S. number at first glance some liszt scholars catalogued these pieces with ignorance without thinking that these pieces were actually a part from a larger earlier cycle to the set we all know, cataloguing the first piece as S.172c believing to be a separate earlier version and both hymnes as S.173a believing to be totally different pieces based on poems by Lamartine (The main religious inspiration of Liszt), now after the complete publication from the whole early cycle by Albert Brussee the S. number on the first 3 pieces and the rest of the unpublished pieces has finally been replaced by the early unpublished version of a piece/ cycle catalogue (S.172a) Just a theory lol
