FishPass: 30 years of the Westcountry Rivers Trust and day ticket fly fishing in Devon & Cornwall!
For three decades, the WRT and its passport scheme have helped South West rivers thrive while giving beautiful and great value day ticket fly fishing for all (see fishpassapp.co.uk). Dom Garnett met up with Angling Development Officer James Christoforou for a closer look at the fishing on offer (we fished Beat 53, Lydelew on the Lyd) and how this not-for-profit scheme helps conserve our beautiful wild waters.
The current season (2024) might be all all but gone, but there are still plenty of beats to offer sport with grayling and other species- do check out the FishPass app and website.
Bug thanks also to Turrall Flies and filmmaker John Deprielle for their input- and if you enjoy the video please subscribe!

      Indeed, they are so cute- and so nostalgic for many of us! There's still hope though- and a bit of a revival in some areas. I guess the advantage of smallish lakes is that unlike our polluted rivers, it's less complicated to sort the habitat out. I also think there is a quiet appetite out there for more carp free lakes to keep that true strain of crucian we love to see. Folks like Portsmouth DAS and the Angling Trust's National Crucian Conservation project deserve a big pat on the back on this.

      Tricky one. This is still an issue in some spots here- but I have to say things have moved on a lot, with education and policing. These days we have several Polish bailiffs in Somerset and Devon, so it is possible to integrate people! Sadly, there will always be others who need hitting hard- you'd hope that by now, post Brexit, those who stayed are law-abiding and most are. It feels like there has been a culture shift, but there are still some rogues out there... and British poachers who also need taking to task. It also needs all clubs to insist on high standards of fish care- too often they get away with poor gear and a tennis racket sized net. If this was carp fishing (a much tougher fish!) they would be lynched!

    great video Dominic, I have a question what brand of rod are you using?? I have an old split cane 9# rod for salmon and pike, would that still be okay to use? It was made in the late 60's early 70's. I was given it and I wouldn't mind a weekend trying for something other than trout for once :)

    • @domgarnettfishing
      @domgarnettfishing 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The rod is a Vision Daddy. I am not especially brand loyal with rods to be honest- the main reason I chose this one was because I got a good deal on it and I smashed up my last one (a Greys). So far so good after around 3 seasons of use. I am not a huge fan of cane. I love the aesthetic and the feel of it for playing fish- but I find it really heavy and poor performing for longer casts, just not a patch on carbon. Smaller cane rods, say 7ft, can be very nice to use, but for big flies and longer rods, I don't like cane. I've tried- but it's just not for me!

    Great video as always Dominic! I've read your book and joined the facebook group. I'm very excited about fly fishing for carp, however my experience so far wasn't exciting. I've scouted a few lakes in my local area in Transylvania that hold carp but they don't really have shallow water or seen any cruising carp. I had no success locating them and even throwing bread or dog biscuits in various parts of the lake did not produce results. Of course, ideally I'd like to catch carp using tied naturals. Any tips locating carp on those type of lakes would be greatly appreciated.

    • @domgarnettfishing
      @domgarnettfishing ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks- great to hear you enjoyed the book and video! Sorry to hear you've struggled to find fish where you live. Conditions can be important- calm days with little wind will help, as will good quality polarising glasses! You may have tried these things already, of course! Are the lakes very deep? That could make spotting and fly fishing harder. It's rare that I fish "blind" for carp. Quite often they will follow they will follow the wind, especially if conditions are mild.

    • @domgarnettfishing
      @domgarnettfishing ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely! Well, I'm never sniffy about angling methods- bait fishing has its place too. This tops it all for me though- it's hard to beat the challenge and the intimacy of fly fishing for these fish! Each to their own, but I do sometimes think with all the tech, self-hooking rigs and the rest it can become a bit impersonal. I think this way would really appeal to those who enjoy stalking, floater fishing etc. Again, almost fishing is good fishing in my book, but this style deserves wider recognition.

    Great stuff Dom and John. 👍 Your points about safe, swift, handling are particularly relevent given all the social media stuff/promotion/attention that this branch of angling is recieving at the moment. It's also really good to see somebody showing pike (fly) fishing as exactly what it more often is... tough, challenging fishing and not just about monsters. Great stuff!👍🎣🐊

      Cheers Geoff. Yes, correct on both counts- and glad this comes across. We get just a limited time to film with these shoots and that's it. Naturally, it's sod's law that I'll get a bigger fish the week after when not filming- but actually looking at a tough day is probably more instructive? As for fish care, I do worry a bit about social media. Fish care has to be a priority- not an extended photo shoot!

    Great fishing and useful tips, thanks - and good to see your dog sharing in the action too!

      Thanks Peter. Well spotted! Not my dog, but the camera guy, John Deprieelle's. He's called "Badgermole" and is a bit of a legend! Has the perfect temperament for a fishing dog, just loves being outdoors but never gets in the way. I'm sure most of the time he'd rather I was throwing his favourite grotty tennis ball rather than flies, but there you go 😄

    Nice film Dom, interesting information and great pics of The Levels. Could you tell me please, the make of the landing net handle. Thanks, Andrew

      Thanks Andrew. The net is a Daiwa LRF. The reach on it is excellent- but to be quite honest, it's not the toughest for pike (mine has been repaired at least once). The Drennan 3m specimen twist lock is a tougher option.

      I use the drennan twistlock, it`s well worth the money and strong 🙂@@domgarnettfishing
