How to Make Encaustic Medium
This is a brief explanation of how to make your own encaustic medium. It’s easy and economical, however a bit time consuming. I make encaustic medium about 3 times a year. Take your time, follow the tips listed in the video, and you’ll have beautiful encaustic medium. Good luck!
*Note: You must have good ventilation while making medium. Wear a mask when working with the powdered resin.
Ingredients, tools, and equipment:
-Large slow-cooker (buy at a thrift store)
-Paint stick (wooden, for stirring)
-Heavy rubber gloves (for heat)
-Non-latex gloves (mixing ingredients)
-Small container for measuring
-Large Pyrex glass measuring container
-Cheese cloth
-Clamps (binder clips or bulldog clamps)
-Aluminum mini-loaf pans
-Filtered Beeswax (Bulk Apothecary)
-Damar Resin (R & F or Blick Art Materials)
-Hammer

I have carved into this painting, creating spaces where black oil stick can be embedded. I rub it in and remove it with vegetable oil. Then, using my torch, I set the black and burn off the oil.
Black oil stick on Encaustic Painting

In this video, I am demonstrating how I use R & F Black Pigment Stick to add depth and dimension to my colorful encaustic (beeswax and natural resin) painting. Once the oil stick has been applied and rubbed into the holes and divots, I remove the remaining black using plain vegetable oil. Nothing fancy. After I have rubbed off all excess black, I then use my torch to set the black and burn off ...

    Did you know that your birds video has been tagged by TH-cam as a child's video? I think it's because you were describing your paint set as a "student thing." I can't save your bird video in a Playlist, or subscribe to your Channel. So disappointing as I just found you and love your art! Don't you just love AI and it's mindless determinations. Just thought you'd like to know. ❤❤❤

    Okie dokie artichoke! I'm gonna do it. I have been thinking of getting a foodservice scraper. However I did get a stainless steel one from the painter section of Walmart a few weeks ago. Really sharp edges on it but a flexible blade. Think I am going to try using pliers for bending the corners up and away from the canvas surface. Probably should grind em down in case for some reason someone steps on it. I'll never leave it on a flooring but I am in a frequent earthquake zone so ya can't be too safe

      Excellent question! I use Hangman French-style cleat hangers. Work like a dream and I buy the ones that can handled much heavier weight than my painting just to be confident. You can order them from many places. Here’s an example from Ace. www.acehardware.com/departments/hardware/hanging-and-mounting/picture-hanging/5767470?store=18142&gclid=CjwKCAjwxZqSBhAHEiwASr9n9Kxzl9dV3huQ1jLDFgPAu6bwqQmE2L__ucyODyB-0KSck055st4GHhoCTwsQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

    • @emilywilliams-wheeler7685
      @emilywilliams-wheeler7685 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I don’t. I’ve never had any trouble. Gesso goes onto raw canvas as a seal and works the same on wood panels. It’s like primer when painting bare walls.

    • @markbarry6228
      @markbarry6228 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, you really should seal the wood. It may seem fine now but over time the wood has a greater chance of warping or rotting. The painting itself can be effected by Support Induced Discoloration (SID) over time.

    • @fogsmart
      @fogsmart หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@markbarry6228there’s lots of conflicting advice if one watches 20 or 30 TH-cam vids on panel prep (without even getting into stretched canvas frames!). So not to be a negative Nelly or a mansplaining down talking commenter, all I can say is the majority of artists seal their panels with something like GAC100 followed by a Gesso product. So there’s that.😀

  • @teresagrigsby-rose8761
    @teresagrigsby-rose8761 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you pull the tape off before the gesso dries? Was wondering if it peels on the edges when tape is removed? Thnx for the video. 🙂

    • @emilywilliams-wheeler7685
      @emilywilliams-wheeler7685 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I don’t remove the tape until the painting is complete. I have rarely had trouble with peeling when removing the tape. If there is difficulty removing the tape, I just use an Xacto knife to carefully grab a corner of the tape. The tape helps preserve the edges so well. Good luck!

  • @ash_m_
    @ash_m_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the helpful video! Wouldn't the sides and underneath need to be sealed too? Or do you do this at the end?

    • @emilywilliams-wheeler7685
      @emilywilliams-wheeler7685 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always sand and seal the sides with two coats of satin polyurethane. The inside back is fine left as is. It’s like canvas. We don’t paint both sides of the canvas as a rule. Of course, you’re certainly not wrong if you decide to seal the back. Have fun!

I have not used it directly touching the paints. I have only used it with paper as a barrier between. Did you know that there is clear gesso? www.dickblick.com/items/00618-2006/
