On this channel I'll be exploring the technical and artistic capabilities of the Roland FANTOM-0 workstation.
Since I play the piano at my church, most of my experimentation will be with religious songs that I might actually use someday. But the techniques, tips and tricks should apply to any type of music. Let me know if you have any requests or ideas - I'm always looking for inspiration!

You do some fantastic videos that no one else does so thanks I have a question I can’t find and answer too anywhere and wondered if you ever tried to achieve this. Once recording in the fandom sequencer I wanted to get the MIDI out either as a single file so I can import the tracks of midi into a daw. I have ableton 12 and bitwig 5.3 . I know I can export to a usb stick easy enough but I’d much prefer to play the patterns into a daw itself. I set up both daws and I got midi in I can play the actual keyboard it’s self if I light the buttons on tracks to green so that’s working fine and record what I play. I don’t seem to be able to figure out how to play a pattern or song and get any midi from the patterns into the daws? Audio is fine but any idea I’d I can get the midi out directly? Using a usb stick is rather laborious and as I do this a lot I concerned re plugging a stick in and out all the time and it’s possible it corrupts the usb stick which is a bit scary . So have you ever tried to record midi as as a pattern is playing from the sequencer and got it to come out the fantom o usb midi port and into a daw? Thanks again. Hope you are doing well. Blessings to you and your family this Christmas 😊
Hi - yes! Everything you're asking about is possible. See if this video helps: th-cam.com/video/pKYyXDtSWaU/w-d-xo.html Every recorded track, group or song acts just like a live track. So if you have the channels set up with your daw to play live, then it should work with something that's recorded in the sequencer. I frequently use a recorded MIDI track to play through my DAW (sometimes also with a channel I'll play live) then I bring it back to the keyboard to produce audio, and send the audio back to the DAW for recording. That's especially helpful when there's another MIDI track on the DAW that I want to be included. Let me know if it's still not working and we can talk about more what you're trying.
Is it possible to save the settings for the mic input once fine tuned? I don’t see a way to do so.
Hi - I haven't found a way to do it either. I was hoping some changes would be remembered when you turn the keyboard off and on, but I agree it looks like everything goes back to the default every time.
@@contemporarysynth I ordered a separate unit for my vocals. There are tons of possibilities on the Roland O for creating one's own vocal patch. Too bad there isn't a way to layer effects and modify and save. I will probably improvise with them live for the echoing function. Thanks for the confirmation :)
Super video, thank you
Just found this channel, this is fantastic! Looking forward to checking out everything you have. Thanks so much
Wow, you are fast with with the interface handling :) Love this machine. It's everything i have wanted for years! So user friendly.
A lot of time and practice to master the basics. To give you an idea of Paul's level, it's like discovering a computer for the first time. For you, this is your beginner level. And Paul knows perfectly how to manage the software installed on the computer (file explorer, internet browser, text editor, spreadsheet, etc ...). FrenchGuy ;)
Yes! Love this quantize method of percentage. Nothing worse than on the grid inhuman music, I would play in what I wanted...but then hear played back at the 100% quantize, that other synths would only offer, and it became inhumane, ugly, perfect timing. But with Roland FantomO at 77% it plays back exactly what I played in and want.
Totally agree. <100% grid quantization is a great way to allow a little artistic rubato. It's also a great stop-gap while you're still learning how to play in time. I won't admit which purpose it was serving for me in this video!! :)
Thank you 🤗
👏👏👏

Thank you hodja. Please continue with EDM videos
This what makes the Internet so wonderful, amazing people who have mastered something difficult, taking the time to share it with other like minded people who are struggling, and asking nothing in return, just glad to be of help. Thank you from us all.
Thanks! You nailed the sentiment - we're a small community with this keyboard. It's nice to know we're all wrestling with the same buttons and features!
Hi ! I am so happy to discover your videos (coding, musics production, live for church) And I'll test your python lines to try some ideas. Thank You. Stay blessed
Thanks, and good luck! Let me know if you have other ideas for future videos. I'm always looking for stuff to go figure out!
Wooow owsm tutorial sir I learn lots of things about fantom from your channel than u so much
That is a very good tutorial. As church pianist I wanted a sequencer to start recording backing track . that is why I bought a F-06 a month ago . Your video help me a lot and I thank you , Keep going and be blessed for your work !
Thanks, and good luck! I love working with sequenced tracks during our services. It's hard but the keyboard makes it very possible, especially if you can use it with a laptop. Let me know if you get stuck. Maybe that's a good future video topic!
Love these Fantom-0 tips! Thank you, and subbed.
Are you still using the Fantom-06?
I sure am! I actually have the 07, but it's pretty much the same thing. Nice to hear from you! I know I'm slowing down a little, but I have a few more videos coming out this week.
Great tips, Thank You Paul!
Thank you.
This was super helpful. However, I don't know if I set something wrong, but my MIDI won't play on Ableton. I can get Audio to record from my Fantom 8 to Ableton, and sample. But, when I try to use MIDI track, to Ableton using my Fantom 8, MIDI shows zero response. I'm using Channel 1 in Ableton, am on Zone 1 on the Fantom. In Ableton, I can select the 1 MIDI/Top clip slot, and I can get tempo/click outputting on the Fantom, but that's it. Maybe I set something wrong on the Fantom itself under the MIDI settings, or Sync/Tempo?
Hi - sounds like maybe something's wrong with your Preferences in Ableton? I frequently have to tweak those to make everything work, but if you're getting audio then you should be able to do MIDI. Latest firmware is Oct 2023, so that's probably not it. I recommend more experimentation, and maybe checking out the Ableton site (help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/209774205-Live-s-MIDI-Preferences). If you've tried everything and you're still stuck, consider going to contemporarysynth.com and signing up for a lesson. Then we could troubleshoot it in real time. Good luck!
Hey I have the same issue - did you figure it out?
@@TheHannes15 I did not. Was going to factory reset my F8 but, I didn't want to have to reload all my stuff. So, for now, no Ableton. :(
Hi Paul, great tutorials. Thank you so much. very helpful. In relation to the top of the line Fantom, any idea how many average length gospel songs (3 mins?) can be loaded (programmed) into it before you need a USB thumb drive for the rest (or extras)? Cheers
Both the FANTOM and FANTOM-0 have the same internal memory for samples (2 GB). A 3-minute sequence takes around 50-100K, so you would run out of Scenes before you ever ran out of storage. Audio samples, i.e., wav files, are a different story, especially if you've downloaded any expansion packs from the Cloud. But you should have no problem with plain MIDI data.
Hey Great Video but can you make one showing how to export as when I try to export it just gives me a blank song or track
I just tried it again and it works for me. Make sure you're not blocking anything with the Mute Track or Solo Track options - everything is included by default. Maybe try another USB drive? Be sure to format it first (Menu/Utility/USB Memory Format).
@@contemporarysynth Ohk I’ll try that for sure but can you make a video or short showing the process to do the same? Anyways Thanks for the advice 😄
I did not even realize I could hold shift to switch between measures. Just like on my JD-Xi, but I never tried it. These videos always teach me something valuable.
press *Pad Mode* > select *Rhythm Pattern* and simply press a six lighted buttons when recording
Great point - that definitely works!
Since getting my new Fantom 07 a week ago, your videos have been incredibly helpful. Thanks! So here is a beginning midi question (which I’m sure is obvious to hundreds of you): for “channel your energy”, how exactly did you connect the Roland to the Yamaha? Do you go Midi Out on the Roland to Midi In on the Yamaha? And do you need to go Midi Out on the Yamaha back to Midi In on the Roland? Again, thanks.
Congrats on the new keyboard! It's an amazing machine but it's a bit of a learning curve. Yes - I went from the MIDI out on the Roland to the MIDI in on the Yamaha. I did not run another cord the other way since I didn't need the Yamaha to do anything on the FANTOM.
Many thanks for the quick, and I’m sure obvious, response. My learning curve continues. Blessings to you. Keep up the great work.
The first "TR" drum machine was the TR-77 from 1972. There were several models of these preset rhythm machines made throughout the 70s. Roland's first programmable drum machine was the CR-78 from 1978.
That's awesome, thanks for sharing! I just read about the CompuRhythm CR-78 on Wikipedia. If you play the clips they have there it sounds just like the songs they mention. There's so much history to all of this. Really incredible.
@@contemporarysynth check out my “Computopia” video where I use the 1978 synths: Jupiter 4 and ProMars with the CR-78
Wow, that's amazing! So is your channel. The perfect blend of technology and art. You're my hero! Subscribed.
@contemporarysynth Hello, I am curious if you would do virtual Roland Fantom 07 lessons with me? I'm having a hard time teaching myself to use this machine. I'll try and find you email address.. thanks!
I'm happy to help. Maybe you could use this forum to post a few things you're trying to do, and I'll try to pass on some ideas to try out. That might help other folks too. Trust me, you're not alone! Alternatively, my email address is on the About page. That works too!
@@contemporarysynth Okay I'll send you an email soon. I'm just trying to figure out how to navigate the machine generally and assemble a scene for a live set, how to record my voice into the track. How to have separate effects on the voice vs the instrument (if that's even possible), how to upload samples into the sampler, what the "banks" are and just a hundred questions really. hahaha! I just have had a Casio workstation in the past and a microkorg that felt all a little more intuitive to me than this machine. It's just frustrating to navigate and I'm wondering if I sat down with someone who knows it well if it'd be easier to learn what I need to learn faster than scrolling through videos and so on, because the manual is so basic. Thanks so much! Angel
We appreciate the mention! It's a fair and solid short review.
Nice info! I have an rotary simulator (GSI Burn) that has unbalanced inputs and outputs. Would you please happen to know if using Balanced Cables from the Fantom 0 into and unbalanced port is ok to do?
Hi - I've used both stereo and mono cables in and out of the FANTOM Main and Sub outs, going to mixers, other devices, and amps, all with no problem at all. I'm sure either cable type would work fine going into your simulator. If you don't mind, please post back here how it works out for you, so other folks can find it later.
@@contemporarysynth Hi and thanks for you reply. I received for following from the manufacturer of the GSi Burn. I fear I will be losing some of the sound characteristics using unbalanced cables...I will check with Roland about that: Hello, the GSi Burn has unbalanced connections, you should use mono "TS" cables when connecting it to a balanced unit, or you should interconnect a passive DI unit that translates the balanced connection from your keybord to unbalanced, and back to balanced if needed. For short distances, just using normal mono jack cables would do the job. Best Regards, The GSi Team
I want to change the position of the drum keys, I want to move them up an octave. How is this possible?
Easiest way is probably the Oct (Octave) setting within the Zone you're using. It's on the main Zone screen. You can also use the Zone Transpose or Octave Shift functions, in the Pitch section of the Zone Edit page (Shift+Zone Select). Good luck!
@@contemporarysynth Thanks for the answer, but I guess I didn't explain it. I don't want to shift the drum sounds, I want to take them completely and move them to another octave. I want to change sounds like kick snare, hihat clap from c1 to c5. how can I do that
It sounds like you might be need to build a custom kit. Somewhat as I described in the video, use the Assign button (16) to pick an Initial Kit, then press the key/note you want to program. Then press the OSC button and disable Partial 2. Next, make sure Partial 1 and the Wave No. L box are selected, then press ENTER and the arrow keys to set the tone you want for that key. Repeat for any other key you want to program. If that all works, don't forget to save the tone when you're done!
@@contemporarysynth thank you i understand now
Hey My fantom is showing that the computer is not connected even though I have connected it to my laptop what should I do??
Sometimes it's easier to check from the laptop side. What DAW are you using?
Hi, thank you 🙏 For share your knowledge. How can you assign each individual sound from the kit to a different output. Sub 1 ,Sub 2?
Hi! As far as I can tell, a Zone can only have one output. But if you wanted to have different notes go to different outputs maybe you could put the same kit in different Zones (each with a different output) then use the keyboard split function so only certain notes are played in each Zone. Maybe?
🤔 maybe. Thank you so much 🙌🙌🙌
I want to create noise using FX sounds. uplifter, noise down riser etc. There are many options like but I don't know how to use sytnsizer, can you help me?
I'm happy to try! I haven't tried pitch bends with FX sounds, but I bet it will work - at least with some of them. I'll experiment and see what I can do. What kind of sound are you trying to make? Maybe that can be my next video!
@@contemporarysynth I sent you an e-mail for sample sounds. Thank you for your reply.
I want to create noise using FX sounds. uplifter, noise down riser etc. There are many options like but I don't know how to use sytnsizer, can you help me?
When you first get the keyboard, you are not able to access all 16 zones. I turned mines off and I forgot how to turn it back on. It comes off.
Maybe check your Scene Remain option. If that's on it reduces you down to 8 zones. support.roland.com/hc/en-us/articles/4585942115227-FANTOM-06-FANTOM-07-FANTOM-08-Can-I-set-Scene-Remain-for-a-desired-zone

Yet another highly informative and brilliantly explained video thats opening doors on my fantom. Im so glad i found your channel. Thankyou. Btw do you have a background in studio engineering? Did you record bands or anything? You talk like a guy whos seen a mixing desk or two.
No studio time but many years of working hard with well-meaning volunteers. Someday I'll make it big, though. Maybe just a few more videos!
Appreciate you, your videos are vey helpful and informative for Fantom 0 users. They should provide a card with a link to your channel with every purchase

You certainly know your stuff, sir very good and helpful 👍
Very informative. At the 2:00 mark you mention the click track on "All Right Now" but if you listen to this part of their song, I think you will agree that it is most likely someone playing claves. th-cam.com/video/lSdBtoIIYT4/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared&t=168
I agree that part sounds pretty human... I don't see how the rest can sound exactly the same every time, but maybe someone was really that good? How will we ever know for sure? Someone needs to find out from the studio!
Just got my fantom 06 and found your videos whilst looking for help understanding how to use the effects. Im so glad i did, you explain it so perfectly. Your videos are a must-have for new Fantom-0 owners. Seems like it takes months to learn this instrument's full functionality and become fluent, and you have put in the time. Thanks so much for passing your knowledge along.
