Two Days Working on my Sewing Book - January vs. October
There's really no such thing as a "typical" workday on a project like this, but these are two days (spaced 10 months apart) that I spent working on my book - Time Capsule Wardrobe.
Time Capsule Wardrobe is a collection of sewing patterns that mix and match to create a historically inspired capsule wardrobe. A historybounding guide in book form, basically. The book includes the patterns themselves, illustrated instructions for how to make the garments, and guidance for how to style them. It is not yet finished or published - I'll share updates and announcements once it's available 😊

Why do Actresses Complain about Corsets? (and why we should believe them)
มุมมอง 93K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I’m not asking anyone to stop promoting corsets (as a corset maker that would be an absurd thing to do), I just wanted to explain why an actress’s experience of wearing a corset might be different from yours. There’s a time and a place for “accurate historical sewing,” but in my opinion, seamstresses of the past were a clever and innovative bunch. They didn’t “follow the rules” if they had a shortcut. So when someone says “sewing isn’t accurate” because they use a serger… I think if someone from 1910 had a serger, she absolutely would have used it instead of flat felling seams by hand. Your video and process is very well done and the result is fantastic! I’ve made a walking skirt once before, and your instructions are much more clear than the ones I muddled through!

    I think many people talking about this have never worked with actors. Actors and actresses complain about their clothes and shoes. I have worked all my career making costumes for theatre. I have heard more actors complain about their shoes, actors and actresses are generally very young-they have often never worn formal clothes or shoes-they are used to yoga pants and training shoes, so hard dress shoes with high heels are not something they are used to. It's the same thing with corsets-if they are not even used to wearing a bra, a corset is not going to feel comfortable. Also I would point out costumes generally are the focus for actors and actresses anxiety about their performance- you can't really say I'm really worried my performance isn't good enough, you are much more likely to try and detract from that by complaining about something physical-favourite is the costume, as you say also factor in a 12 hour day and suddenly whatever you are wearing is unbearable, factor in as you say the fact many actors feel powerless on set-actresses complaining about their corset when they are being listened to makes complete sense.

    Um…Where did you get the idea for this version of the pocket? Not from Janet Arnold or Bertha Banner. Did you see an extant garment? Do you find the pocket-tape helps much with the weight distribution, when it ends up that close to the side of the skirt?

    • @LinaPiprek
      @LinaPiprek 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not sure it’s what you intended, but this comes across pretty rudely. With just a quick flip through Patterns of Fashion 2 (Janet Arnold) I found pockets this style on pages 23, 29, 45, 49… It’s not something I made up, if that’s what you’re suggesting. Yes, I do find that the tape is helpful, since it shifts the weight from the pocket opening/seam into the waistband. Regardless, I’ll happily admit that my preferences have changed in the 2 years since this video was posted, and I currently prefer more “modern” in-seam pockets on seams like this (the finished result is a little more subtle if the entire pocket is pressed to one side of the seam). This Victorian style works fantastically hidden under pleats, and generally you see them towards the back of skirts like this. I have plans to update the pattern included in this video (as well as releasing the skirt pattern) after my book is published later this year.

    Thank you very much for this incredibly detailed video. You are a great teacher. Flossing is a form of art. By giving the basics as well as showing different designs for different boning materials the principles become very clear. I especially liked seeing silk floss and embroidery floss compared next to each other. I feel very confident in stitching my own flossing designs for all different kinds of stays and corsets now. Thank you!

    I'm sorry, but what you are using on the hem is, from memory, tarlatan. Not horsehair braid. Tarlatan is a stiffener, used to give body and structure wherever needed. The one you used is one of the thinner ones, more commonly for collars, sleeves, lapels, and other places, even waistbands if they are particularly thin and structure-less. Skirt hems are normally done with a 4 - 6 inch width. Horsehair braid is yet another product that is put on the bottom of the hem with fairly loose stitches and is designed to take, or sweep, the dirt and rougher walking treatment instead of the main skirt material, and can easily be swapped out with new as often as needed. Many use old scrappier material to do this job if horsehair braid is unattainable.

I got the pretty housemaid corded corset pattern and I have a few other ones and I was wondering how to do the flossing. Looks as easy as doing regular embroidery. 😊 I like the sampler format. Good to practice. Young girls used to have to do a sampler to show off thier skills. Letters and numbers and lots of flowers and vines, some got quite elaborate. Sometimes they were framed sometimes they were made into stuff like pillows or book covers. A dying art that needs to be brought back.
