    Good review. Do you know if there is a superlight packable backpack in this style but like 40-50l in size that I can use for a through hike? Planning to go super ultralight and this kind not only is much cheaper but is also lighter than any of the ultralite backpacks I've seen. Don't plan to have heavy loads in it, quite the opposite, mostly just need more pack space. Thanks in advance.

      The problem with going ultralight (when it comes to backpacks) is that they just can't carry a moderately heavy load. You may have ultralight equipment but your food and water is going to weigh the same whatever pack you have and if you're going for, say, 3 days that's 4-6Kg of water and and another 2k of food (unless you can guarntee good water resupply). A lightweight backback like this is just not going to hold the weight. You're going to have to splurge out on a recognised brand backpack, or do as an acquaintance recently did and made his own (about 800g but not waterproof). Look at secondhand? The new Osprey Talon Velocity is resonably priced (for a specialist bag)

So I'm in the market for one. However, I'm not sure about Lifeventure. The reason is, I also had one of their money belts, which I've taken on just a few trips, but the elastic band seems to already deteriorate.

    Only UK law makers can think that the blade snapping off your fingers is a good idea and any safety mechanism against such snapping is "illegal" or dangerous. Good video, given your constraints. I personally carried a pioneer for urban EDC when I was in Europe and a Huntsman when I was in the outdoors. Norway is quite more lenient than Britain though. Big fixed blades for outdoors are a norm. I should recommend the Huntsman which also has scissors on top of your Camper.

      The Lawmakers here are so Ultra-Woke about anything that MIGHT just be used as a weapon! We're expecting a ban on hammers any day now! 😉😉 Why anyone with even just 2 brain cells would think of using a SAK to do grievous bodily harm is beyond rational thinking. If one wanted to do this the average kitchen drawer would have a dozen better weapons, and with their intention in mind, they would not worry about legality anyway! It's absurd!

  • @xrysoryba
    @xrysoryba 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought you were going to talk about converting your Forester to the 111mm version of the Camper. You can do this easily by replacing the scale with the slide lock with one from a 111mm liner lock model. They are reasonably priced on Ebay. This makes the knife into a slip joint model. I'm not sure about blade length under UK law though.

  • @brianbartulis9709
    @brianbartulis9709 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My Huntsman has a tiny hold in the scale, accessed after opening the corkscrew. It's to store a straight pin. Pretty handy to use with the tweezers removing a splinter. Yeah them UK knife laws are odd. If worried about cutting yourself while having to pierce/cut tough rubber hose, etc... .. there are cheap woven Kevlar gloves on the market. They are great for cuts but not a puncture..so there's that. Some of them gloves even come rubber coated for more grip. ie; of the simple Kevlar glove material we had at work.. I needed a small piece of cloth to replace a clogged air filter on an air operated agitator. Too loud without a filter. ~ Using a fresh razor blade out of the cardboard...I pulled the glove tight to cut off the thumb of the glove. I'll be damned if I didn't have to saw the razor blade a bunch to cut through. twas kinda cool. heck, if someone pulled a knife on me I'd be able to grab the blade and pull it from their hand. tips me hat ~ I peeked at amazon uk and there's a slough of cut resistant gloves of all sorts. I searched knit Kevlar gloves. Dupont are the ones than created Kevlar methinks. So perhaps tougher? I've used the ones/still do...with the rubber poka dots.

    • @geeksgooutdoors
      @geeksgooutdoors 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pinhole is there on most of the SAK with the plastic scales that have been sold over the last few years...I think. Definately have seen the "cut proof" gloves on Amazon and other places...

    I think the back springs on the Victorinox knives are nice and stiff. They aren't what I would call "heavy duty" in the sense that you would maybe abuse a heavier knife blade by twisting or trying to force the knife into hard materials; they are just fine for cutting, and take a nice sharp edge, but the blades aren't heavy enough for piercing hard material, and that's where you are likely to run into problems with a blade collapsing. I don't know whether it's in my head or not, but I use the shorter blade for harder materials and the longer blade for softer materials. I haven't actually tested it, but it seems to me that the longer blade would have more leverage, and thus be more prone to closing, then the shorter blade, so I will use the shorter blade more often.

    Happy Wednesday GGO . My default keychain carry for over 3 years is the 58mm Midnite Manager, the manager version with a LED & a pen in the scales in place of the tweezers & toothpick & mine still looks as good as new. I also carried for about 6 months before settling on the MM, the ultimate Victorinox mini-tool kit knife, the Midnite-MiniChamp , a tool laden mini SAK. My MMC is a 2nd hand one in excellent condition model bought on Ebay and I only replaced it with a brand new MM when my local Victorinox outlet had the MM on sale at a 25% discount. I found that I was not using a lot of the tools on the MMC & it is much bulkier & weightier than the MM so I am not sorry in making the change. For most of my life I have carried one model or the other Victorinox classic as my keychain knife but none compare to the versatility & range of tools as the MM & MMC .

    Victorinox Swiss Army, does not make a Wood Carving knife that has two carving blades, a saw, and a large roughing blade. Blades that have 58 or better Rockwell hardness or 440 or better stainless steel. Just three slots (not sure what they are called) handles. that are rounded for comfort, with locking blades. Folded no more than 3 1/2 inches long. If all the carvers out there will unite and keep bugging Vicky about it, I am sure they will listen.

    Happy Thursday GGO, sorry for the late comment . I have Liked your video & subscribed to your channel, I am Subscriber #32, wishing you good luck in growing your channel. I understand the inequities of UK knife laws & their detrimental effect on law abiding UK tax payers whilst having no effect on criminals & Jihadists. I am a native Londoner who left the UK many decades ago & immigrated to Israel & reside in Tel Aviv. We have no such restrictions on knife carry here in Israel & as such I have a number of knives that you cannot own & certainly not carry in the UK. I am myself a lifelong SAK user & collector ever since I was a schoolboy in London back when knife crime & gun crime was negligible & every schoolboy had a pocket knife to sharpen his pencils, dig holes in conkers & carve a heart with his & his girlfriends initials on a tree in the park. I don't own a Forester but I do own & carry a 111mm Garant as part of my Gentleman's knife EDC ( consisting of 93mm Pioneers, X's & 84mm Cadets ) and the only Camper that I own is a collectable NutSAK version bought from Tortoise Gear the maker of the Firefly ferro rods, Fire Ant rods & tinder spirals . My choice for PTK ( Pocket Tool Kit ) in place of a Gentleman's knife is a modified Huntsman with black Plus scales, Firefly rod in place of the toothpick , tinder coil & mini-screwdriver on the corkscrew & fitted with a SwissQlip for convenient pocket carry, my alternate PTK is the 85mm Evolution EvoGrip S17 ( also with Firefly rod, tinder coil & mini-screwdriver ) which fits into the ticket pocket of my jeans. The S17 & S18 which I also own are of course illegal in the UK due to their blade lock . I own a lot of other SAK's including similarly decked out Huntsmen & Climbers with different colour plus scales, my home tool kit is a Deluxe Tinker with plus scales & I have a large number of other, 58mm, 84mm, 85mm, 91mm & 93mm's both collectables & those that I occasionally use ( such as the Explorer, Compact, Bantam, Mountaineer, Midnite Mini-Champ, & the rare discontinued Motorist). In addition I carry on my key chain the 58mm Midnight Manager & I have on order the 111mm Outrider in black with the pre-2017 side slide lock, which is IMO the 111mm equivalent of the Huntsman

I've done the math's and if you only need an urban EDC don't buy the Compact as its cheaper to buy a 3 layer Climber ( I have 2 ) & fit it with Plus scales of any of the 6 Plus scale colours available on Ebay and the additional layer is barely noticeable in your pocket . Little point in doing a watch review with the camera pointed at your face. A tech review should be showing the tech. Fail.

    Cool features but the negative display absolutely sucks!!! Very difficult to see in low light!! I don’t care how cool it looks. If you can’t see it, it’s useless!!

      People seem to have very polarised view of the display. Personally never had a problem with it! Using the backlight obviously helps in some light situations...

      Use it in the field, you will have a completely different opinion. This is not a 9-5 office watch. Extremely useful if you go dark and have to use NVG protocol. Only downside is battery life. Get a Casio Protrek or G Shock if you’re a jeans and casual shirt guy/gal.

    Have you considered a Spyderco UKPK? Its a one hand opening non locking slipjoint knife. I carry mine along with an leatherman style PS and an vic rambler.

      Good call. I like to keep things simple so prefer to carry only one tool at a time. The Style PS for work days and the Camper for walking/hiking...

    Hi, good selection of tools. For the 90mm victorinox I have made a lock that can be used when you needed and it's separate from the knife. It's very easy to make with some basic tools. I have made video it's on my channel, check it out. Cheers.

    I have the Hiker. Very similar. One thing I do is I have a leather lanyard tied to the split ring and when I saw I can wrap it tight around the base of the saw one loop and that keeps it from folding up on my. Try it.
