Hey everyone my name is James Marin and I’m professional camera operator who works in the film industry here in Los Angeles
I’ve worked on a wide variety of projects from music videos, commercials, motion capture for video games, and even some movies
My goal for this channel is to create content that's of value to you the viewer.
I’ll be covering everything from specific camera operating tips that can help you on your future projects, inviting colleagues and guests to speak on topics that they’re experts in like Cinematography, and Directing.
And I’ll also be showcasing some behind the scenes footage from shoots that I’m on and breaking them down on how they were shot.
So whether you work behind the camera or a completely different craft inside or outside of the film industry, I want to create videos in which you can take away something that will be helpful to you.
Thanks for checking the channel out!

Great vid ! sound track bit loud
Nice, thank you for sharing this
Hey James! Loving all the hard work you're doing to create these. ❤ from Korea, Yun.
Thank you for watching Yun! I appreciate your comment!
Suuuper !!!
Haha... found exactly what I was looking for man!
Hey man, love your content, would you ever do a little more on describing the setup? I just finished up on the UK Elections with the Red Spy Augmented Reality rig on a Pro Sled Rig (4 Blues in the arm), I'm very interested in the Gyro at the bottom, it's overall affect etc - Ant
Lovely
I Have a set of 2 KEM gyros for sale, Seattle WA Look up TJ Williams steadicam op
Nicola ie the Italian Stallion.... Way back I went to a Steadicam workshop taught by Garrett and Ted. we were students together.... I remember your stage jump in garret's rig~~~
Damn should have started with that 5-17k initiation fee 😭
Hey James, I was checking out Black Magic`s new cute little cameras on their website and thought, even though we can`t see the face: Wait a minute...that Steadicam OP and that tattoo... 😀
Hahaha I’ve been spotted!
Really enjoyed the video dude
Glad you did! Thanks for watching !
Love your oner, did you had the volt mounted?
The entire workshop was done without using volt. At the end though they gave us the option to use it and I did for the Oner
im watching back all vids
d o a comprehensive overview
thanks!
not sure what you mean? @@playmatee1
Damn thats a huge barrier to get through, but im going to try. Worked a few non-union feature last year in the Bay area as a 1st AC and plan on moving to LA to get more work.
It is a barrier and its that way by design. Its just meant to insure that there is a certain level of experience and have had time to make contacts that will hopefully give you union work.
So once you’re in do they like send you union jobs to apply for or something? How does that work?
You receive information on what is currently shooting in your region (Western region, Eastern region etc..) and what will be shooting. Sometimes it has contact information to contact the production but I have never heard of someone landing a job from a cold email. However, I doubt anyone really ever cold emails when it is provided. Getting work in this business is really more based on who you have worked with previously, whether or not your work is being seen by others who will want to hire you, and being recommended by your peers to other people who will hire you. The more union contacts you have the better. I would not join the union if you aren't receiving any calls at all for union work. When you get calls and have to consistently turn down union work because you are not in, that is when you want to join. Otherwise you are paying dues for nothing
Thanks for sharing your work experiences.
Thanks for checking it out!
Hey James! I see you`ve had the Arricam LT here, probably with the Steadicam mag on the sled - one question, as I never operated filmcameras on the Steadicam. Do you feel the shift in CG due to the film moving from top to bottom, even though it`s a displacement magazine? And if so, does the Volt help compensate that or do you have to switch it off?
Great question. Yes you do feel the weight shift from the mag. However you grow use to it pretty quickly. I wouldn't rely on the Volt to solve balance issues though. Rather pay attention to how your rig feels and correct the balance via your topstage. The Volt works much better when it doesn't have to work as hard to correct what you're doing or how your sled is balanced.
@@JamesMarin That`s very interesting to know - thanks for answering!
Very good video
Thanks!
you make this? it's pretty cool
That’s me in the video! Operating the camera 😊
That was so awesome! Larry lived in my town years back and he used me as a mannequin to build out a Movi vest rig 😂. Such a legend!
Thats amazing! Larry is the best
Amazing bts video !! As a rookie steadicam operator based in Paris, it's really interesting to learn how you work on big scale commercials like this ! And of course, amazing steadicam shots man really impressive work ;)
Thanks for watching ! How do you like working in Paris? What is the primary work out there? Movies, commercial, fashion?
Love these tips!! will definetly keep them in mind. do you perhaps have any tips for how to walk with the rig? I just can't seem to get rid of the horizontal bobbing of my shots...
Good Good Good
Please send Trinity contact number
Very informative, thank you! I lost it at the Parks and Rec "money pleeease" 😂
Glad you found it informative ! Thanks for watching
I have the urge to add a sliced tennis ball to the top of the mounting pole... ;)
We're camera people. We don't have that fancy tennis ball technology.
'promosm'
no idea what you're trying to say here
great video man, loved your oner shot
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it
Wonderful video sir! Could you please put the “witness” camera somewhere where we can see your hands? Thank you ☺️
My hands?
How are the YT shorts going! I'm now reposting all of my Tiktoks to here too
Yooo! I think thats a good idea. More platforms more reach. However I'm not super familiar with how shorts works. I should probably look up a video on optimizing. A lot of my shorts fell super flat here so I'll probably start over on all those.
Beautiful 🔥
😁
Nice Sharing!!! Love it
I appreciate you watching thanks!
Great video! Keep doing these type of BTS!!
Thanks for watching!
love it!!!
Thanks for checking it out!
Loved this BTS! I’ll never work on a large scale production like this, but it looks like a lot of fun.
Its a blast when you have all the right tools for the job :) !
I wish I could watch the filming of any of Bill's shows, movies. He doesn't put a front on for the cameras. He's just himself, and that's one of the many things great about him.
His wife hates white people and has him brainwashed
He was awesome to work with and kept everything fun and light on set. Great guy!
I’m not in the film industry at all, medicine actually, but I’ve always had a real interest in cinematography. I find it really interesting how the high budget stuff is done, especially the dirty details like this. Great content!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate any viewership !
Always cool to see behind the scenes stuff
FIlmmakers love BTS
One day
One day soon!
These are great tips 😊
Thanks for watching !
@@JamesMarin so happy to subscribe to your channel 😍
@@jibinjoseph4828 I appreciate it ! Thanks!
Thanks for your great summary. Wish I’d been there!
Thanks for watching! I'm so grateful I had the chance to go!
Really helpful videos James, thanks. Has the Artemis 2 become your primary rig for conventional steadicam work now? Or do you have a different rig for that, and keep the Trinity 2 permanently built and ready to go?
I plan on keeping my Tiffen M1. Its built like a tank and I still love mine rig. The Artemis has some nice things about it but I still perfer my trusty M1. If on a show, I'll have both built ready for anything
Thanks for sharing your experience. Seemed like a really solid course and I loved the film at the end haha
Thanks for watching!
Bro !! We share the same Surname!
Ciao Pietro! Che interessante che abbiamo lo stesso cognome
How much cost?
It depends on what you get with it. Get a quote from Arri
Hello mate , Which company you have hardmount
I'm using the Flowcine X Mount. Its linked in the description. I also have an entire section in the video where I talk about the options on the market. th-cam.com/video/fv6vr6TWwzE/w-d-xo.html
Do the days have to be the exact role I want to do? Let's say I want to DIT under local 600. Does that mean I have to DIT for 100 days non-union or could I just PA?
Correct. It has to be under ONE classification. 100 days of Cinematographer. Or 100 as an AC can be 1st or 2nd I believe, someone corrected me after I posted this video. 100 as an operator, 100 as a DIT. etc etc You can however join as a camera utility which is essentially a PA for the camera deparment. That way you're IN and you can do what is called a "Re-Rate" (Pay the difference) when you move up to a different classification such as a DIT
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Great video 👌
You’re very welcome ! Thanks for taking the time to watch
i don't know how to apply for this work shop! could you please guide me
This workshop only happens once every couple of years. It's not a regular thing. Just keep an eye out on what the people over at Betz are doing. They'll announce it on their instagram.
