With a carburetor and points distributor we went “old school” and had a blast. Jeep CJ5 “Punch List!” Getting Ready for the Trip of a Lifetime.

It is a mad dash prepping the 1973 Jeep CJ5 for a trail ride in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. It has been a few years since this guy has prepped a machine for the trails. It is coming back and maybe it is a little harder than it was in the younger years? Regardless, the old Jeep and I are the same age. Well are in this thing together! #cj5 #jeepcj

A friend of mine that grew up in Telluride does those roads in her Subaru, she’s in her sixties.
Both i have two 67 mustang,and a 70 f100 also.
@@roberteast4160, you understand best the conundrum I’m in. 😁
@@TwoSticksHRR yeah tuff to choose
This video is proof that a good woman, beautiful scenery, and a classic jeep are the key to happiness!
Mustang first
Mr.Rob personally I’d like to see that mustang get built ,but that truck needs some love too.
@@kadencoats7497, thanks Kaden!
Gears gears gears !!!low first gear T18 ,3:15 TFC gear set , and whatever final gears you think you can get away with on the road . Lol. Now if you can just find someone to finance all that!! I'm really enjoying these videos. This is the style of off-roading I like . God Bless.
A Dana 20 tfc doesn't have to be wore out to get in-between gears what happens is the 4x4/4x2 shift rail will move first and disengage the 4x4 spur gear before the high/low rail moves ALL d20's will do this. Some will do this more than others because the center whole in the little flat bars that connects the two rails was drilled off center giving more leverage on the 4x4 rail making it move first. I have done this by design before sometimes you have to grind a little off the lock lug ( the lug between the rails) to make room so the 4x4/4x2 can move just enough to pass the spur. I like the video. I like Rusty as well. I've been fooling around with old jeeps for 35 years and still love the older cj's . God bless
@@kevinbrewer9421, thanks for that great explanation! I really like the 2 low and honestly use it more around the farm than 4 low. These are tough little machines! 😁 Thanks for watching and adding to the conversation!
You should play that “ Maybe “ song. Like at the start or the end of the video. Or both.
I want to vote for the Mustang, but only because I’m currently restoring a 67. I say take care of the truck first because of the sentimental value.
Do the truck. Just brought home a 68 with a straight6 , think it's an 80s model though, it has a floor shift 5speed. Sure could use some guidance, it's the first ford I've had.
TRUCK!!!!
My votes for the truck! Great videos
Thanks for voting. Looks like the truck is getting the love so far. 😉
I vote for the truck. You may not have a specific goal to work toward, but maybe you can make one. How about your grandfather's birthday, or a date special to your family? Since the truck seems to hold more sentimental value, I think it's worth more to put your time and effort into that. Plus, I'm sure your dog would love to go for a slow speed cruise around the farm in the bed of the truck. It doesn't have to be a big trip. But I think it would mean so much more. Then, you can take the fall/winter to work on the mustang for a 2025 spring/summer trip along route 66.
I just wanted to add that I am also a huge fan of the straight 6. My CJ5 had a straight 6 and it was fantastic. All the extra room inside the engine bay was amazing. It was easy to work on and the torque was unbeatable. I think you've made the right call sticking with the straight 6!
I thank you and my dog thanks you for that logical explanation and good thinking! Glad someone shares my love for the 6!
I vote for the truck.
Thanks for the vote! It is turning out that trucks are pretty special in people’s minds!
Fix the truck first to go on a fall trip . It reminds me of my grandfather’s old truck . I won’t be mad at a Jeep trip either
Thanks so much! Every fiber of my being says, “take a topless Jeep!” If it weren’t for the nostalgia of the project the Jeep would win. 😉
Mustang please 🙏 😀😀😀😀😀🙂🙂
I really appreciate your vote for the Mustang. Though be told, I really want to hit the Mustang! I can’t wait to pin that 289 back on a long stretch of road. If the truck wins, the Mustang will not be far behind. 😉
I love that truck
F100 first take time on Mustang git right
That’s good logical advice! Thanks!
Go with the truck.
I really appreciate that vote! Old faithful needs a little love. 😉 Thanks for watching and voting!
@@TwoSticksHRR my first truck was a '67 ford with a 360, auto trans, and a stepside bed that my great grandpa drove off the lot. Sure miss that old truck.
Dear sir, a trip and a beautiful place. This park is close to the city. Thank you
Awesome message!!
Conquers? I drove these roads in a 2-wheel drive Ford Courier long bed in 1986.
@@fluxfaze, yes! I did them in 2 wheel drive too. 😁
Thanks for posting these videos. Driving vintage Jeeps around the beautiful mountains of Colorado is awesome! I've done the Willys Colorado Fall Colors Tour and that was wonderful. Working on building something a little newer for my next trip to the southwest. My 47' Willys 2A isn't the right vehicle for covering the vast distances out there. It would be fun to do this with more people and with similar Jeeps. And you planning another trip in the future?
Thanks for this video it’s just what I needed Im also in the middle of restoring a 74 CJ5 unfortunately I live in Canada so I have to pay mega shipping costs from the US but it’s gotta be done
I've got a '64 and it's like you said, in-between two eras of jeeps and very hard to get aftermarket stuff for. Bikini tops are non existent from what I've found and seats are available but tricky to filter through and find! Your video was helpful, I appreciate it
@@theamaturepro, thanks for watching and I hope it was helpful. 😁

so glad I found this channel. you're right, what a view! would've bought tears to alot of peoples eyes. thanks for sharing!
Hey CJ5 brother! I've got a 1981 with a 258 inline 6. Makes me wish I was living out west again. Not that many overlanding trails around here in central NC. They're all chained up for future condos. 😉
The fact you were doing all those trails in 2WD just shows how capable these machines really are. Really an amazing feat of engineering! There are a few other fascinating channels here on TH-cam that focus on exploring abandoned mines. Some of the equipment and relics they find are quite fascinating. I remember going through the Park City Mine adventure in Park City, UT before they closed. It was really neat to see the mines in person. I wish it was still open to the public.
There's no better drive than being in a CJ with the windshield down! Especially when up on a mountain trail with the amazing scenery surrounding you. Beautiful drive and beautiful Jeep!
We need to Jeep together. We have a 1982 CJ7 and overland trailer . I think my sister sent you pics of our set up . We are in Meridian,Ms . I’m looking to do exactly what y’all did here , trailer my Jeep with the overland trailer to CO. Boy do I have a lot of questions. I’ll see if my sister can give you my contact info at church . I want to plan a NC trip with the Jeep as well . We have done the entire Natchez trace and went to Southern CJ Jeep show an swap meet in Kingston GA . We try to drive it as much as possible but CO is a bit far to drive a 42 year old Jeep
Yes! Yes! Let’s please get together and talk! My two favorite things are Jeeping and camping. I’ve been working towards those two things coming together. I recently bought an M416 military trailer to outfit to overland camp. Colorado seems to be much more open to this idea than anywhere I have ever been. I have a lot of questions for you on the camping side. Please let’s get together soon.
Just found y’all ! Love the Cj and the beautiful country. Headed that way ourselves this week ! And God bless y’all for saying God bless. We truly are blessed each and every day and don’t hear that enough as a reminder 🙌🇺🇸

Magnificent video! Two door Jeeps rock!
100% agree! I was told on the trails there were 3 categories of people 1. The young folk (Jk and JL) 2. The old School (Tj and YJ) 3. Antique. I guess I am older than old school😮😂
Awesome CJ5 they are becoming rarer and rarer with each passing year. I would keep that forever.
@@robertedwards7430, I agree! I told my wife on this trip that this may be the Jeep that my boys say was my “dad’s jeep.” She kinda rolled her eyes, because of all the Jeeps I’ve owned. 😂 However, this and my CJ2A will be keepers.
Love the video but not so much the music. I would rather hear the CJ5 purr going up that trail.

Great video Rob! But my anxiety is way up though from the heights! Expect to see chip bags on the dash 😊
Great video!
Morning to you . I see you decided to leave the new pup at home for the trip . Take care
Yes, I got to looking at the 24 hour drive and I think it would’ve been real hard on the both of us. When he’s trained a little more we’ll take shorter trips and work up to a big one. Btw, the event that solidified the decision was he stepped in my coffee cup a few days ago while I had left the truck. When I returned there was coffee from the windshield to the back window. 🙄
@@TwoSticksHRR ow gosh . Enjoy the trip .
Awesome all those late nights with the dog your helper of course paid off look amazing enjoy 🙏🙏🙏
Yes, the feller really helped me out. I wish I could’ve brought him, but the 24 hour drive would’ve been too much on a new dog.
Howdy from western Colorado!
I sure do like this place!
I luv your style = keeping cj5 origional BUT that modern steering wheel has GOT 2 GO. When yall get back order a new ORIGINAL BIG OLE STEERING WHEEL! Have Fun and B Good.
I like what you are putting out there! 😁😁
Fantastic work! It always feels good to get a number of the small projects all finished in one go. I'm surprised you took on the disc brake conversion with only 24 hours left! That was gutsy. And I'm quite shocked at how quiet everything is on your CJ5. You could hear mine rattling and squeaking from a mile away. I think it was extra smart to use the hose clamps for the extinguisher. Always good to have extra parts around, available for use in an emergency. I'm in Utah and the weather here is also warm and very sunny. I highly recommend getting a bikini top or something for a little bit of sun coverage. Enjoy your trip and hopefully we get to see a little bit of trail footage as well.
Glad the cj won! But I love them both! Love your channel! Thank God for his Son!!
Great progress. Just a suggestion watch running into big rocks, trees or solid objects or the jack may not be usable. Just speaking from experience.
Great advice! The potential for that happening is great! 😂
