    James work terrifies me and it’s true…. There are no friendly, harmless ghosts in his tales. Love Connolly’s work as well and met him in Maine. A genuinely nice man. His books are well written and his characters are phenomenal! He has the talent to develop a creative, original plot and to also write characters so well that you are invested in their journeys. Can’t wait to read the next one.

    I had a very similar experience when I was young. My library was an older Carnegie Library, children's section to the right, adults to the left. I remember the day I made the choice to see what was on the left side. I was looking for some science fiction, and I came away with H G Wells, The War of the Worlds, Ray Bradbury, R is for Rocket, and Fahrenheit 451. The library was my favorite place to be, especially in the summer, no school, just books, stories of places far away, and genres including, and beyond, Science Fiction.

    I remember the original Public Library here in Drogheda and how happy I was to join it as a boy. The adult section was a wonder to me and I felt I had truly grown up when I joined it... Not sure what the first book I borrowed there was but as a big James Bond fan as a young fella I'd not be surprised if it was one of those classic Ian Fleming stories...

    These stories have been with me since I was 9 and have shaped the way I think in subtle and not so subtle ways. There is definitely magic in dark tales.

    Looking back I suppose that the horrific aspect of the Grimm Tales was where my love of the strange and weird sprang from. As a young teenager it was the horror genre that fascinated me and even now that's an aspect of the Charlie Parker stories that I love...

  • @marialette1
    @marialette1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh yes. My grandmother had the Grimms' book with the original tales (and rather unsettling illustrations). I remember the witch who made the concoction that allowed the Little Mermaid to grow legs; the witch cut her own breasts to add her own black blood to the brew. I never liked Disney's abominations.

    Horror was my first love as a teenaged reader and I honestly believe that what I liked most about the Charlie Parker stories and what got me engrossed in them was the supernatural element and that's as a result of my love of that type of tale.

    Ogden Nash's poetry was in the library's children's section- a great find. I hunkered in the stacks with The Screaming Ghost, complete with lurid cover and illustrations.

    *People who don't read, or only read a book once, are aliens living amongst us. There are many books I've read multiple times, and it's around time for me to revisit Fame Is the Spur by Howard Spring, a book I've read around once a decade since my school days. I'm not going to say how many times or decades that would be because it would send me crashing into the reality of not being still in my prime.*

    It's quite disconcerting when a subject speaks to a camera but the video editor chooses to use a view from a completely different camera, it's a trend that's creeping in more and more. I think John should take that weighty tome he's holding and slap the video editor around the head with it until a promise to stop doing it is extracted.

    • @purplejanew

    Ah yes - we had the Dutch version of Reader's Digest at home, in the 1960s. I can't remember ever having read a 'Folklore, Myths and Legends' article. Perhaps they thought the Dutch are too sensible for that kind of thing. Pity. I'll look for it online, in English. Too much gets lost in translation, which is why I will never read Charlie Parker in a (Dutch) translation.
