Sin and Punishment 1CC - No Death, Catpat Commentary Run
I always wanted to set some time around to play Sin and Punishment, and with the English patch, it's a bit more accessible. It's totally possible to play this without the translation, considering there's English voice acting. But reading the tips in practice mode makes it easier to understand the controls. Regardless, I've known about this game since it was available as part of the Wii virtual console series. Originally this was released in Japan Nov 21, 2000 on the Nintendo 64. It was developed by Treasure and published by Nintendo. Over time it's become a cult classic and after learning the in and outs of the game, I can see why. It easily became a personal favorite. After first running through it to get the overall feel of the game, I decided it would be a welcoming game to 1cc (1 credit clear, no deaths). I grinded it out when I had some spare time (thankfully it's not a long game) and on my first attempt after practicing separate segments of the game, I was able to clear it! Very sloppily at that!

    Awesome video , a quick tip about the last boss and the barrier weapon. As long as you don't hit him with the shot he won't regain health. I try and time the barrier to shoot off to the side while the boss is moving in the opposite direction. I hope this helps.

    Congrats on the 1CC! This one takes a hell of a lot of practice and labbing out to beat. I recently completed it myself on hard mode and "patting your head and rubbing your stomach for an hour straight" is exactly how I've described this game to people. I'm sure your commentary will be super helpful to anyone struggling with this game (I learned a couple of new tricks from it myself). I have some additional tips: 8:40 Slashing Radan out of his jump also does a shitton of damage, so if you get him every time the fight will be over VERY quickly. You can also shoot Kachua for a bonus. 9:40 You can slash this instead of dodging if you want. Same for the last spinning guy and the VTOL. You can slash pretty much anything in this game if it's close enough. 12:35 You can roll through Brad's shock waves here and follow Leda to end this phase quicker. The slash timing is also much more lenient if you do a double jump and you can even get a second slash in if you time it perfectly. 13:15 Here I just stay on the left side while firing straight ahead and jump the other lasers. You can just slash the rolling things. 14:30 This part is much safer if you jump at the end of every ledge while strafing a bit. Will give you enough air to clear most of Leda's bombs and let you focus on the turrets. 17:05 I found you can just mash Z on the sword-to-sword part of the first Brad fight and not get punished for it. Same goes for the final blow to human Kachua earlier. For me the mash on an N64 controller is easier if I reach over with the middle finger on my right hand. 19:25 Even more important than the health pickup here is the time bonus - the timer will reset to 99 every time you hear a "get bonus" (usually after defeating a miniboss or other large enemy/series of large enemies). 20:45 You'll notice the mines are at two fixed heights. You can jump over the low explosions and let the high ones go over your head. Or you can do a hybrid approach where you just focus shooting the low ones and ignore the high ones, but I usually just aim right at the boat. 22:35 You can get another health and time refresh from killing all these helicopters but as you can see they're much harder to hit than the others. 24:35 As above, killing these helicopters will also reset the timer, so no need to worry about them dropping a refill. 26:20 Those missile volleys are safer if you're strafing as you deflect. 28:40 If you care about points you can jump and slash the core of the ship at the last minute here. Not doing so is why it's "no bonus" at the end of the level - that thing is the final "boss" of that section. 34:20 Okay, so Birth Model. I don't remember what it was like on normal mode, but on hard at least it's really not worth targeting anything other than the blue and purple laser spawns because the regular orbs respawn too quickly. You'll have much better odds at hitting those if you just leave all the yellow bullets on screen and there should be one right in front of your face when you need it. Killing the blue laser hand ASAP will also vastly improve your mobility. 35:35 Lock-on here is MEGA slow as you saw. The way to do more damage here is to just keep hitting the root of the web on the ceiling - it'll take a good chunk of damage every time it bounces on the floor. 37:53 RIGHT HERE when you see two of them for the first time, double jump diagonally in from right to left and it should be easier. The rest do just need precise rolls I think, the final one really being at the last possible second. 39:15 The spider webs here do a huge amount of damage, so if you're given the choice of eating a flame or a web, go for the flame. 40:10 The way this fight works is it squirts blood out every time you shoot it, then a lightning bullet every time you reflect the blood back at it. So the fastest and easiest method I've found is to just lock on, shoot it a bunch, then reflect all the blood back for big damage before rolling through the resulting lightning. It's two cycles on hard but might only be one on normal. 41:30 There's floating fire orbs here that are meant for you to take out the turtle things. 42:50 Fire orb here too will let you take out the dragonfly ahead. 43:10 Again, you kill this thing with a fire orb which only comes out after it's done chasing you out of the base at 43:38. It gives you like 10 bonus targets worth 50k each so definitely something you can't ignore on a score run, but yeah for 1CC just ignore it. 46:40 Lock-on makes the final boss significantly easier because it also works as a sort of auto-aim. Almost everything gets reflected in one hit so there's only a brief moment in the cycle around 47:40 when the larger stuff starts spawning where it's better to switch back to manual.

    I thought i was going crazy with how bad 99% of TH-cam video game reviwers were. Like how they would spend half the review about the story or just speak cliches that didn't make sense like "it's bad because it's linear". Finally, Mark came along having some similar thoughts to mine and opening my mind to a lot of new things. Easily the best gameplay analysis TH-camr by far.

    I'm working through the entire retrospective. Your videos are so entertaining and well written and produced, you deserve 10x the views and subs! Also feel free to do like 20-25 mins videos if you have more to say, I love the longer videos. *End of Video edit:* Aw, with the self doubt. I feel like I'm exactly like you, interested in and passionate about the genre but still a noob and not really interested in putting in the work to get good. I'm perfectly content with a novice mode 1CC at best and while I watch quite a bit of Electric Mark, I can often see how his videos are less relevant to me than I'd like with the hardcore scoring stuff and general points of view. Keep it up. <3
