I’m sure they faced each other in spring training when bonds was with the Pirates and Clemens with the Red Sox.
Being a Phillies fan in the 70s was painful but we never missed watching a game when Steve was pitching. Still my all-time fave.
It was Vida not Veeda. VieDa
What's more impressive or I don't even know what you'd call it... Those 9 RBIs accounted for close to 20% of his total RBIs for that entire season
One hit wonders my ass…he had a fantastic ‘99 season as well, among other solid seasons.
Seattle hitters watched a ton fastballs right down the middle go by that game if you rewatch it. Something Im sure was super frustrating to Mariners fans watching who didn't understand how that could happen so often with such great hitters. It happened because Clemens splitters were so nasty hitters were reduced to guessing. What looked just like a fastball right down the middle you started loading up a full swing for could end up being a nasty splitter diving out of the zone at the last second making your swing look ridiculous. It's an interesting and unique pitching performance to rewatch.
It was a magical year for us Phillies fans even though we finished last. We knew that every fourth game, we were as good as any team in baseball. I remember early in the season against the San Francisco Giants at the old Candlestick Park, Carlton gave up a single to his thorn-in-his-side nemesis shortstop Chris Spier. He proceeded to pitch a perfect game from that point on, 27 up, 27 down. I went to Veterans Stadium at least a half dozen times that season, but only when Carlton was scheduled to pitch. I was there behind the plate (albeit in the nosebleed 700 section) for his 20th win (which was also his 15th win in a row). The following 1973 season, he went 13-20, but us Carlton fans never lost hope with him, and he righted his ship in 1974 and then won 3 more CY Young awards over the next 8 years.
At 10:06, the surname of Willie Montanez is pronounced Mon-ten-yez
At 5:23, It’s Vi-da as in Vigh (rhymes with High)-da (as in duh). And at 7:16, he was on the Cleveland INDIANS…said it, it’s not a four letter word…INDIANS
I was 11 years old in 72 that Phillies team was horrible. Wise was a ok pitcher. Carlton was unbelievable that year
For me as a New England sports fan Mike Greenwell was like the Silver Surfer and then later Tom Brady was Galactus. 🐊 39 12 🏆
You failed to give a mention of the incredible 1978 season of Ron Guidry: 25-3, 1.74 Era, 246 strike outs!
MLB The Show needs his 1972 card in Diamond Dynasty
I was there for Hideo Nomo no hitter at Coors field. There was a 4hr rain delay. We went to the pub, then went back to watch the rest of his masterpiece when the game resumed. I live in Denver, a 4hr rain delay?.But I still tip my cap and saw a bit of baseball history. And I saw the 2nd Rockies homegame ever. So go Rockies.
I do hope the Rockies start turning things around, they're a fun franchise.
Why was Carlton so much better for the Phillies than the Cardinals? The Cardinals refused to let him throw his slider. Carlton had a 95 mph fastball and a big, slow-breaking curveball. “The theory in certain clubs and among certain pitching coaches was if you started throwing the slider, you would lose your curveball,” explained then Phillies pitching coach Ray Rippelmeyer. “Carlton had a very good overhand curve, but I knew the slider theory was a complete fallacy. I convinced him to throw the slider." “It was devastating,” recalled Larry Bowa, the team’s shortstop. “I’ve never seen so many right handers swing and miss at a pitch.”
What great insight into how Carlton became the dominant pitcher he was.
it wasn't just that he tossed a no-no, this was also before the baseballs were kept in humidors.
That is a very good point, so he was dealing with VERY live baseballs.
Carlton was a great pitcher, some years, but at least one of his Cy Young awards was a travesty.
I'll agree with you for his 1982 Cy Young, he just won a lot of games that year and was only a tad above average.
@@BaseballAF I was actually thinking of 1977, John Candelaria should have won
I think I felt the same about 1982, I just don't remember who I thought should have won. That slider...
Love your content, but the "Golden Sombrero" is 4 strikeouts...
I did realize that after I had uploaded the video lol, I was waiting to be called out on it 😅
He had an almost unhittable slider that broke so late over the plate.
I wish I could have seen him pitch live
One of the most enjoyable seasons ever, despite their dead-last finish. Happened to be the first year I started watching the Phils. Seemed to be an even trade when Philly got Carlton from St. Louis for right hander Rick Wise. Towards the end of the season a fan ran out on the field, up to Steve at the mound and shook his hand on behalf of all the fans. Philly sports were in a very sorry state at that time.
It's interesting that everyone has said it was an even trade at the time, and yet their careers ended up being so different.
He had one of the greatest seasons...ever
Agreed!
It wasn’t steroids nor was it a fluke in my opinion.
Interesting video. I really enjoyed it. It's okay to call them the Indians cuz that's what they were back when Gaylord Perry pitched for them. :-)
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The name change was very fresh at the time, and a lot of people were weird about referencing the history of the franchise. I know what to call them based on their history now.
Patrick Bailey will be a better catcher than Alvarez and Moreno this year. Should have won the gold glove in 2023
I think he will be good, but I'd like to see him hit a bit more before I put him in the same category as the other two
good video
Thanks!
Good list but idk I really think Kyle Harrison is going to be right in the thick of it for ROTY
I agree, I wasn't quite high enough on him to put him on this list, but I'm excited to see what he can do in the majors
Barry’s Stats are crazy. Dude is the only player in a season to get walked more times than hitting a foul ball
People feared his power so much, it was legendary.
The definition of "Built different": should just say "see Nolan Ryan"
To your point, I don't think we'll ever see a pitcher like Nolan Ryan ever again
PEDS *** STERIODS *** Brady Anderson *** PEDS **** STERIODS
My favorite Slocumb tidbit is the fact that he played for 8 teams in 10 years, one of my sneaky favorites for Immaculate Grid lol
I have used his name on Immaculate Grid so many times haha
Great video. Would love to see more "Legends Collide". Are you still creating baseball content? Your stuff is really good man.
We are! Some real life events took away some of our time, but we still have a bunch of videos planned for the future.
@3:48 what are you talking about Ichiro hasn't looked "solid" in any of his at bats yet? He doubled off him in the playoffs, and again at 5:40 you say his "first hit in all the time he faced Rivera". Regardless of you quickly mentioning the playoffs and saying you were going to leave it out, these statements are still literally lies. At 6:34 you say " he finally gets one to the outfield"🙄. Again ignoring the playoffs double but just as egregious, insinuating Ichiro was attempting to hit the ball to the outfield every at bat. Ichiro is the most notorious infield hit king of ALL TIME, he purposely would hit the ball on the ground and use his speed. Ridiculous egregiously irresponsible commentary.
As a 21 year old from Maryland who was named after Mr Anderson, this makes me feel very good 😂
I'm glad you got to feel good about yourself :)
STEROIDS.
I was disappointed that he retired from the Red Sox at such a young age. Excellent player!!
I believe his retirement was due to injury, but he was on his way to becoming a Red Sox Legend
Maybe you guys should stop worshiping false baseball gods and stick to say, Hank Aaron, The Babe, and others who did not need to cheat all us fans and all future fans. Without steroids NONE of them would hold the entirely lying bogus records they do. I admit it. Barry was great already before his head grew two sizes between seasons.
I concede that Bonds was great before the steroid usage. However, I wouldn't say I'm worshipping him. This also isn't meant to discount Aaron, Ruth, and other record setters earlier in baseball history. He had an elite skill set that he maximized with steroids because he was being overshadowed by other steroid users. If Bud Selig, the commissioner who essentially allowed steroids, is in the Hall of Fame, then the steroid users who set the records should be too.
He should have won 3 MVPs
I think he should have won at least two, but because he was so abrasive to the media, he would have never gotten the votes he needed for a first place finish
Bryse actually went to the same high school as me
That's awesome dude, cool to hear that
Means you went to school with Payton Wilson too
Juan Pierre is my favorite player along with Sammy Sosa.
That's a fun pair to have, I loved watching Sosa too
Killer screwball

Belle is the only player in MLB history to average at least 40 doubles, 40 HR, and 130 RBI per 162 games for his career
He was such an offensive force in baseball that could have done so much more if he didn't get in his own way.
@@BaseballAF What "so much more" could he have done?
Great job! Ichiro is one of my favorite players!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Hello always been disapointing to me that his place in baseball isnt more celebrated then it is.Even hes cards are under valued in comparison to other pitchers like Nolan Ryan Sandy ,an a few others of the same era. Hes stats prove the point
He had the disadvantage of being contemporaries with other phenomenal players of his era, rather than being the best of an era. I agree that he should be celebrated more.
Thanks for that great video! I was a 15 y/o that year and I remember that season so vividly! Despite the Phillies having one of the worst teams in the league they KNEW they were going to win the day that Carlton was pitching! He was such a great competitor and his slider made superstar hitters look helpless!
Thanks for watching! I wish I had the chance to see him pitch in person.
Pedro got robbed a no hitter by his own teams offence.
I am very aware of that game, go figure they score a run in the 10th so he can try to do the impossible
WHY TF ARE YOU OBSESSED WITH OPS+? Just do OPS like everyone else in baseball wtf
We wouldn't be unique if we were like everyone else.
