Field Recording Taklamakan Desert Ambience with Schoeps ORTF Surround 4.0
The Taklamakan Desert, located in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, is one of the largest and driest deserts in the world. Its name translates to "you can't enter, I can't exit," reflecting its daunting and challenging nature. This vast desert, part of the ancient Silk Road, features shifting sand dunes, salt flats, and occasional oases. Despite its harsh environment, it holds unique ecological significance and historical treasures, earning it the nickname "Sea of Death."
The Taklamakan Desert can be quite unpredictable. A swift wind can alter the dunes, making navigation challenging. For safety, a satellite phone is highly recommended. Additionally, the sand's fine texture, similar to flour, has a tendency to infiltrate equipment and can even be a nuisance to the eyes. Thel LOM mics are omnidirectional. You cant do ORTF with omnidirectional microphpones. What youre comparing in the video is an AB pair vs jecklin disk.

I am fed up with LOM, they are everywhere but their stupid geophone is sold out. I will never buy anything from them, fork them.

ORTF is a cardioid mic technique and doesn't work with omni directional mics.
Yeah, this set up / comparison doesn't make sense... even more when recording ambience. Why would you want a stereo image...?

there is rustling at 10k or so, maybe a bit above, in all the jecklin recordings in the right channel that I just can't get over. Is this something wrong with the mic? I don't hear it in the ortf recordings.
Agree! Not only that, there is also a very distinct low freq pink noise as well in the right hannel. I wonder if there was a noise source on the right and the jecklin bounced it and shielded the left mic from it? Very pronounced audible difference listening on ATHM50 headphones. The ORTF sounds much more free, open, and organic to me. The ORTF sounds more contaminated with noise, but that is what gives ambience its life-like feel. Jecklin sounds very sterile to me. Unnaturally so.
Nevermind! I just noticed at the beginning of the video, there is a huge bridge on the right with passing traffic! That explains the high pitch and low pitch noise in the water shots in right channel. That jecklin is less and less appealing to me the more I'm listening to it with eyes closed. It's as if someone split my head in half and dropped a black hole in the middle. There is nothing there in the middle. I don't know how else to describe the feeling, but it's not a positive feel by any stretch. Amazing how the setup these awesome omnis were made for with the dish sounds far worse than the pseudo-ORTF setup they were not designed for. I'm still gonna get a pair once LOM makes more in early 2024.

If you want to buy a LOM Geophone but it´s always sold out. There is a new Manufacturer in Town that makes almost exactly the same Geofon. I will soon Review it on my Channel.

How would you compare the schoeps to your Sennheiser ORTF? Do you have a preference in certain situations?
Schoeps has a cleaner high-frequency sound, while MKH8040 has a rich low-frequency response. I usually choose different microphones depending on the needs of the situation. Thanks for watching!
@@tanjoysound thank you! I was able to test and compare both mics in ORTF. Both amazing but for me switching from the Sennheiser to the Schoeps was like a door of clarity opening! I ordered them :)
I prefer sennheiser for the rich presence that gives... I compare more schoeps with Neumann and I prefer the clarity for this last! Nevertheless schoeps is excellent!

Great recordings! I don't have the budget and don't really need all the functions of the sx-r4+. I'm thinking of building a small rig with a SX m2d2, which has somewhat the same preamps and recording to my phone. Also considering the mixpre, which I guess has lower quality preamps but more inputs in case I want to do more than stereo. Since you own a sonosax device and sound device what would you advise ?
The m2d2 has great sound quality, just like r4+. If portability is a priority, then m2d2 is an excellent choice.

Do you mind if I ask what is your choice between the various Sonosax preamps and MixPre-6 ii? Is there any difference at all in terms of noise floor and transparency? Thank you!
Sure, there are huge differences between Sonosax and Mixpre-6 ii's preamps, when you recording high dynamic range sound. Sonosax delivers a quieter and purer sound, and always able to capture the complete dynamic range of the sound.

Really tempted to buy two the next time it's in stock. Feels like having two would increase the possibilities a significant amount, way more than twice. That's a lot of money though... Audio recording is an expensive hobby. Also, I love the dark sound of a piano through the Geofón. Will definitely be recording one myself.
