    I bought one of these for visual, no photography beyond simple pics like what your phone camera does. I already had 2 manual mounts, but I was offered over $1000 for my refigured beefed up C6-N Newtonian to 1/12th wave and a near perfect .986 Strehl. At $1000 it was hardly more than I'd already put into it. So I was offered near a Takahashi price and sold it. I bought this and a 2" dielectric diagonal plus a cheap 26mm 2" eyepiece. I boosted it up to 224x at Sirius with a polarizing and yellow/green filter, it was perfect in my Southern NM skies on the Orion Nebula. At that high a power you needed an EQ mount like the CG-4 I had to follow it in the night sky.

    Hi Josh, I know this video is a couple years old now, but I have a question regarding the secondary mirror. I'm new to telescopes in general but I picked up a 8 inch dob a year or so ago w/out really knowing much about them. It was an amazing price, it just needed to be cleaned. The problem is that it has a secondary mirror not like anything else I've seen. It connects to the tube like the one in the video does and I can't seem to find instructions on how to properly collimate it since I don't know the name of this particular secondary mirror connection. I took everything apart before realizing this was a unique feature and most dobs have the cross spidervane at the top whereas mine mounts through the tube to the eyepiece.

    • @JoshUrbanAstronomy
      @JoshUrbanAstronomy ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kenneth, sorry for the late reply here! I want to say that's a "stalk mounted secondary". They are a pain in the neck, but I'd use both a laser and a Cheshire eyepiece to line it up. (The one on the Pal Jr. shown here bends slightly into place.) You can also buy or build your own four vane spider. (Some guys even like a curved spider. There's no diffraction spikes that way, although stability and contrast suffers ever so slightly.) That might be the best choice, and shouldn't be too expensive. Let me know if you've got any further questions!

    I just purchased one of these scopes and I had it out for first light last night. I was VERY impressed for the price. I just got back into Astronomy after a 15 year hiatus. We were not able to buy an ED 4" refractor for that price 15 years ago! BTW, less bouncing around with your camera would be better. Your camera moved so much, I was reaching for the Dramamine. Other than that, good video.

      I LOVE that Portaball! Yep, it's the 12.5" model, and it is "out of this world." (#PundayMonday!) The Zambuto mirror is stunning, and blows a 14" SCT out of the water. It packs up super compact (takes up less space than an 8" f/4 dob in my car! fits in the front seat of a Kia soul!) One of my favorite things about it is the ability to rotate the eyepiece for the most comfortable viewing, since it's a ball scope. I'll have to do a video on it. It's a fairly unusual scope, but I don't know why you don't see more of that type. Lemme know if you have any questions about it. I love talking gear!

    • @lornaz1975
      @lornaz1975 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Poodlemanjosh Thanks Josh. I am not sure the scope is worth it. Its an old Tasco and needs upgrading to 1.25in focuser and a mounting for a viewfinder plus I need some way of mounting it to a tripod (i.e dovetail). So far its $75 without the new coating. With the coating it approaches the price of a new one. I will still check them out and still might go through with it. If not then in the future I know were to take a mirror. Thanks again! If I do I will be sure to say hi to Paul.

    • @JoshUrbanAstronomy

      @@lornaz1975 Oh yeah, that's always a thing with builds and resto projects - gotta make sure it's worth it . Sometimes, the PROCESS is, and sometimes it's not. Do you like THAT particular scope, or are you looking for a cost-effective way to grab some starlight? If it's the latter, a used 6" dob might be just the ticket, OR, some parts on the classifieds on CloudyNights. But, restoring things can be a ton of fun!

    On the reflection nebula, just passing through. “Not so long ago, it was thought that the cotton candy-like tufts of nebulosity were left over from the formation of the cluster, but the 100-million-year age of its members precludes this possibility; stars that ‘old’ would have swept out any remaining embryonic dust long ago. “Instead, the Pleiades just happen to be passing through a dust-rich region of the interstellar medium as they make a beeline for Orion.” skyandtelescope.org/observing/the-merope-nebula-and-its-well-kept-secret/
