Oxford Heated Grips Not working?- A quick look inside the controller
มุมมอง 22K9 ปีที่แล้ว
After yet more torrential rain the heated grips stopped working. Before shelling out on some more I thought I'd take a quick look inside... Obvious signs of water ingress, retention and corrosion of switches.. Generous application of WD and they seem okay again, for now!
Quick Puncture Repair with the Stop & Go Tyre Plugger

Got a puncture (thanks for the screw in the road who ever you are). Just bagged myself the Stop & Go Tyre (tire for those across the pond) Plugger tubeless tyre repair kit so I thought I'd give it a whirl. Just happened to have the Sony Action Cam in the bag so I got it all on film (micro sd card actually)...

I had some issues so I thought I'd upload a quick "How To". Initially I thought I had issues with the Camera. I kept getting approx 5mb 10 sec clips recorded on Ustream and no live feed. Rang Sony, no help at all. I did some testing with several different brand cameras over super fast broadband connected via ethernet with a Vidiu Teradek compressor and Ustream (basic account) wouldn't accept an...

    Tip: I struggled to get the mushroom through the tip using the Allen key. My kit was a few years old. A bit of good ole spit lubed it just enough to slip through easier. Try it out if your mushroom looks a bit dry as well...:)

    you have to push the cleaning tool in and out, not screw it in, you could not of made a clean hole, that also could be why it was leaking

    Good demo! The leak likely was because the plug wasn't stretched 2 inches so the mushroom didn't seat against the inside of the tire. Good reminder to me to make sure I do that. th-cam.com/video/DRoTaaDBPhw/w-d-xo.html

    Sadly my newish (2017) Oxford controller doesn't have those nice big phillips head screws on the back but instead seems to have tiny screws inset down in each hole. I've put the smallest screwdrivers I can find down the hole to attempt to unscrew the back but have been unsuccessful. Oxford probably saw that people were getting in and repairing..and changed the design to make that harder so you need to buy new controllers.

    Good Video. Gonna share my issue/solution here, hope it helps. On my bike where the 2-pin connectors are is my problem. when the handlebars move, it puts strain on the pins in the connector. I have had my heated grips for 4 - 5 years and finally one of the connector pins was pulled out the back... Tore the whole system apart to find this. I am eliminating the connectors and soldering it all together and that will fix my issue. I have seen a lot of bad reviews about Oxfords systems... But in my opinion the build quality is solid, and I have personally had no issues with them. For what its worth.

      I experienced the same thing. I try to cut the stem so that a bit (maybe 1/4") is still sticking up so that as the portion of the stem inside the tread retracts, it has some stem left to pull into the hole without dropping below the outer surface of the tire.

      End User It's worth trying. Mine are still working okay since I made the video. You can sometimes find the controllers on ebay and splice them in, cheaper and less time consuming than buying and installing a new kit. This model is knocking on a bit now and they are getting harder to find though. I'm thinking of trying some heated gloves next time round..

    Good vid. I used this on my bike just two weeks ago and it really is a great piece of kit. Mine uses an allen key rather than a pump gun but it's just as effective and takes up less space. I had two 16g CO2 gas cylinders with me but they only gave 12psi so I'll be carrying 5 or 6 on the next ride out. This happened to me on a remote country road so having this under the seat was a real boon.

    • @awesomeass5096
      @awesomeass5096 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll be honest, I'm no expert. The kit is just designed to get you home. The hard bit might be getting the plug with the cement in place. I inadvertently wiped the silicon covering off the plug on one occasion and couldn't get it through the pump.

      Stet Tan instructions say not to use anything with the plugs they supply. Though the fix is not permanent it's the best and safest fix. I used it and it held air for weeks. No issues. Better than old rope plugs and no sticky fix a flat junk.

      Hi Marcelo. Good to hear from you. It's intended to be a get you home option I believe. I couldn't say what the performance risks at high speed would be, and the "Stop n Go" doesn't claim to be able to do that. I've done maybe a thousand "regular" miles on a plugged tyre which includes day to day, city and several hundred motorway miles.

      I used this exact tire plug on my Harley Davidson Iron 883 rear tire, (and I did stretch the plug before cutting it). I then ran it for 4000 miles and there was no leaking at all. I only changed it because the HD shop told me it was not safe to ride permanently. What's the worst that could happen? A slow leak? Do you know of anyone who had a plugged tire blow out? I don't.

    • @devzor
      @devzor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scoop4321 I plugged a pirelli supercorsa on the back of my speed triple right in the middle of the back tire. the tire was brand new when it happened. never leaked, ran the tire to the bands practically, 5000 miles. no issues even at extremely high speeds. If you improperly plug the tire however or have never used one and do something wrong... I could potentially see the plug popping out. As you said though, its not like the tire will explode it will just leak.

    My problem is that the rubber is turning to mush (Oxford HotGrips), under the palm where it gets hottest, after ~2.5 years. The problem is partly related to the palm being to hot while the fingers still freeze. But the electronics are working. Ride in the rain now and again.

      @@awesomeass5096 BTW your comments are very old, however for anyone else having this issue - Buy Grip Puppies and put them over the grips. I too had grips that turned mushy and sticky, grip puppies to reduce the heat a bit but are well worth getting. At first I tried rubber for a cricket bat, but that was too thin, coiled up and broke off. Grip puppies have worked perfectly.
