dissertation work, R workshop, reducing screen time, trip home, & job hunting! | ep__006
☀ the last month or so has been a bit of a whirlwind [in the best way possible]. i went home, helped my parents start their move up north, saw friends, came back, went on my friend’s bachelorette, and am now prepping for another trip to vancouver to see temi!* through it all, i’ve tried to keep up with dissertation writing, half marathon training, and job apps. needless to say, it’s been a lot and hasn’t left a lot of room for editing or uploading.
but now i’m back for a week or so and i wanted to share a little bit of the moments from the last month. i’m looking forward to the weather cooling down and getting back into the swing of things. i’ll have a new routine with my new job starting at the end of the month and i’m looking forward to changing up my work flow and starting a new professional opportunity. it’s going to be a lot but i’m as ready as i'll ever be.
how has everything been going for you? are you looking forward to the end of summer or are you wanting it to continue?

Love Sarah's vlogs and seriously enjoyed this one! Also loved how you stuck to a schedule but were mindful of trying not to stress or be too hard on yourself. That writing tracking program goal-setting thing is so cool.
yess love Sarah's vlogs! and thank you, it can be tough but i always try to be kind to myself through this process ☺
Seriously enjoyed this video!
Friendship diaries is such a cute idea! Love that your recording & uploading these memories not just for you but also for your friends <3
thank you! i love looking back on them 🙂
Seriously enjoying your videos!
thank you so much! ☺
As someone who is in undergrad and considering a PhD I really liked this video! Just found your channel today cannot wait to catch up :)
i'm glad you found the video 🙂 and it's great that you're considering a phd program now. you have time to plan!
food the same color is a-ok! it's... color coordinated! we are not judging 🤗
haha yess thank you for making me feel better! 😆
Congrats on the job! And I hope your mom gets better soon! A broken sternum sounds horrible
thanks so much, Maddie! i think she's almost fully recovered now but she was definitely struggling for a bit. hope the start of the school year has gone well for you 🙂
emily! truly enjoy hearing your speak and your thoughts. (currently at work whilst I watch this.) I heavily feel less screen time/social media. I've currently turned off all social media notifications and using a "work" mode on my cell phone whilst I'm at work. it's been a weight off and helped to not doomscroll or get caught up in a mode of self-comparison with other creators and platforms. it's can get draining and for September, I really want to hone in on setting healthy boundaries for myself. i pray the same for you. sending well wishes to you and your family. <3
thank you, tierra! it's so tough because there are aspects of social media that i love but it can quickly become too much. i'm glad you're taking steps to set healthy boundaries for yourself. sending well wishes to you and your family too 🙂
I am also eating dinner while watching this TH-cam video lol
haha yesss it's the best! thanks for watching 🥰
super excited to see you posted :))
thank you so much! it's nice to be back 🙂
<3 loved this
thanks temi!! 🥰
i truly can't believe it's already going to be august in a week. i really love how you articulate your emotions and you seem content with where you are and how far you've made it. it truly seems like you're doing well figuring it all out. thank you so much for sharing as always. ❤
thank you so much, tierra! i hope your year's going well ☺
Your mindset, voice and visuals are so comforting! Wish you to get your goals done or updated->done for the second half of 2024!
thank you so much! i hope everything goes well with your goals this year, too 🎊
I was just checking in with your TH-cam profile a couple of days ago to see if there are any new videos and decided to catch up with those I haven't seen (done with all 😅)! Happy to see your new video!!
oh wow, thank you for taking the time to watch them! 🙂
It sounds to me like you’ve done an excellent job at achieving and making progress to a lot of your goals. I didn’t set goals at the start of this year, but reflecting back, I think I’ve done a great job at things that make me happy and proud. Perhaps my greatest achievement is consistently flossing for the past 4 or so months which for some reason I’ve never been consistent with.
thank you Maddie! i'm glad that there's still a lot you can look back on and be proud of so far. was not setting goals an intentional choice? if yes, how are you finding it compared to the years you did set goals? i may try that for 2025. & congrats on flossing consistently! it's not a fun habit to establish but i'm sure your teeth will be happy 🙂
@@emilythoman I honestly don't recall if it was a conscious choice or if I just got busy and forgot! Honestly the goals each year are more or less the same: eat health, exercise routine, try to work on my Spanish, so maybe it just felt too repetitive. But I like how you had such a variety in your goals!
Your videos are always such an encouragement! Seeing you progress lights a small fire in me to do the same. Thanks so much for sharing.
thank you so much! it's always so encouraging to receive comments like this. appreciate you-and best wishes with everything you're working on 🙂
I watch Sarah Fischer too! cool to see that you drew inspiration from her. I don't find these videos boring in the least, honestly the 'mundane' is the most relatable part of life whether someone watching you is in grad school too or not. always enjoy your content, thanks!
yess love her vlogs! & that's helpful insight, thank you 🙏i also enjoy more "mundane" parts of life but never want to assume that people will enjoy ~my mundane parts of life, if that makes any sense 😂😅
this video was so intriguing! i really loved how you stuck to a schedule, but you constantly reminded yourself not to stress, pressure yourself or worry if you spent too much or too little time on a task. it's such a nice reminder for myself to practice in my own workflow. thank you for this!
thank you so much! i'm glad it was a nice reminder ☺ still trying to figure out what works best because every day looks different but just taking it how it comes!
writing for 2 hours is actually great, especially getting 2k words down! loved the vlog :)
thank you so much! i'm trying to remind myself of that. the cram writing i did in undergrad is not going to cut it for this lol glad you enjoyed 🥰
Can't agree enough! It's great progress.
I love these writing/impromptu vlogs!
thanks so much, Bria! ☺
I went to Houston a few years ago for a conference and got to walk around a bit, but I definitely wish I had the time to explore more. Looks like you had a great time!
it's so hard to see stuff at conferences! the schedule is usually packed and you have awkward amounts of time unless you actively plan to go earlier or stay later. but i'm glad you could walk around a little when you went. hope you can explore more whenever you end up back there 🙂
Love to see you thrivingggg [more comments in our iMessage chat of my usual live-messaging hehe]
thank you temi!! always love and appreciate your live messaging 🥰

Saving all of your travel vids for future recs 😍 As someone who also has friends scattered throughout the country, I'm loving this friendship diaries series and love seeing you nurture your friendships while doing your PhD (something I wish I did more of)!!
1. right! i have to try it when i go home this summer 😆 2. i need to know their recipe because outside of the flavors i wanna know how it's always soft, even when you just take it out of the freezer 3. is it "buck-ee's?" that's how my friend pronounced it but they're also not from the texas area so who knows lol 4. i hope you can solo travel again soon! & thank you for your kind comments. they're always so appreciated ☺i hope you'll have more time to nurture your friendships post-phd!
Loved the intro and also all the song choice in this vlog! Congrats on a successful trip/presentation 👏
thank you so much, Mikee! i really appreciate it ☺
Love this for you! Friendships are so important. Thanks for sharing.
thank you so much 🙂& yes, i agree!
I enjoy your travel vlogs! Nice way to get recs too. I've never been to Vancouver, only Toronto and Montreal. would love to visit that restaurant. I'm sure you killed your presentation. <3

I don’t know how I haven’t found your channel until now! Love your editing style and following along on your day to day🥰 I always get so embarrassed to film in public too🤣
omg same! i remember seeing your videos and thought i was subbed. but now it's official 🙂 thank you so much! & lol right. the shot compared with what it looks like to get the shot always makes me cringe a little internally 😅
你好 Emily!I discovered your channel over the weekend and I binged watched everything so fast,所以我很开心发现你更新了!I relate with you about languages,我的母语是西班牙语可是我最爱的语言是普通话我学习中文这么多年还是不够好!anyway 你的vlogs帮助我放松并分散自己的焦虑!请继续!加油!
謝謝你花時間看我的 youtube 視頻:)你的普通話寫得很好 -- 好厲害哦! 你為什麼開始學普通話?其實我希望學西班牙語 😂
I have always loved China,I don't really know how to explain, like I have a deep connection to China, everything the culture, food, literature, movies and obviously 普通话!其实我以前去过中国只为了学习中文!我看你很认真在学习西班牙语、我觉得很可爱!祝你好运!

I'm trying to get back into a cardio routine with running. I realized yesterday on my run how desperate I am for new sports bras, so I purchased those last night. New shoes are for sure the next step.
that's awesome, congrats Maddie 🥳 ooh yes i definitely need to buy more sports bras too. let me know what shoes you end up getting!
Those croissants looked awesome. I’m super inspired to get running!
they're so good and easy to make! i wanna try putting them in the air fryer next time to see if they'll get crispier. & definitely go for it! it's been really nice (albeit hard lol) to feel myself getting stronger 🙂
Ok your note about how you use your iPad mini *with* your pro, is exactly why I want a mini lol. Food looked delicious! I might have to try making some croissants!
haha okay right! most people i told were like, "don't you already have an ipad?" (which, fair). but you should get one! i've really been enjoying using mine and honestly use it more than my phone now. & thank you ☺ if you do end up making them i hope you film so we can see how they turn out!
I can tell you, your chinese is way better than my kid, and my kid has both parents speak exslusively chinese at home. It's amazing you speak so well, so well that I can't tell it's your second language.
thank you so much, it means a lot! i hope to continue working on it and improving.
Being in the US is very lucky, not sure if you've gone to China to visit, even in first tier cities like Shanghai factory workers make less than 1k USD/month working 12hr shifts. In more central part of China it's common people makes 4k RMB/month or less. Majority don't have a passport and many get their visa application rejected. China also has its pros, it's safe to walk around at night and the choices and variety of milk tea is out of this world plenty. Chinese people are generally very kind as well.
thanks for sharing your thoughts! i definitely understand and acknowledge the privileges i have from being adopted to the united states. it's a common message that i receive, especially when i talk to people who grew up and/or live in china. and while i did end up with a relatively good life, i know a lot of adoptees who did not have this experience. for me, being adopted also comes with a lot of heavy feelings and a constant state of unrest and grief. in addition to the racism, sexism, and sinophobia/xenophobia that's so prevalent here, i do not truly feel at home anywhere and i grieve a culture (the experience of growing up in China as a Chinese citizen specifically) and a family that i will never know. i recognize that these feelings may sound trivial in comparison to income and housing, but they are my feelings nonetheless and ones that most people can't understand unless they were adopted too. & i have been back to China to visit 5 times now but i want to go back again soon (and would ideally like to be able to go back once a year if i could ever afford it). i definitely remember feeling safe walking around and i'm excited to try different boba and meet more Chinese people! 🙂
@@emilythoman Being chinese it took me over 10 years (work visa renewal after renewal and queue up for GC) to get green card and now I call America home as a citizen of this country. But I can totally understand that you may have this void in your heart of - not having the experience of growing up there as Chinese. But think of it this way, that void is replaced/filled by memories of you growing up here, I'm sure you have fund childhood memories right? As for racism, I always tell those racists to shut it, there's no stereo type of how an American should look, American can be of different colors, different languages and difference race. Even though I'm a new citizen, I'm a citizen nevertheless, no less than someone born and raised here. As for traveling to China more, I would say find a job that send you to China on a regular basis, that way airfare hotel food all expense paid. Many companies in bay area regularly send people to China, multiple times a year and with company daily allowance limit on food, I grow 5lb every trip. :-( Literally for the 4-5 months that I'm back in bay area in between each trip, it's just enough time for me to loose the weight I put on during each trip. Best of luck to you.
@@AA-kj4ic thank you for taking the time to share and write everything out! i do have fond memories growing up and as i've gotten older i've tried to make peace with what is. hopefully i can find a job (as you suggest) or some other way way for me to travel back to China more frequently. best of luck to you too!
As a creator with 400 videos and just over 1,000 subscribers after over 3 years on TH-cam, I relate to literally everything you have said so much. Why does it feel so cringe to have a TH-cam with few subscribers but it’s not cringe if it’s to an audience of tens of thousands of subscribers. I’m just out here doing it for funzies and to share my experiences. Also, I love going back and watching some of my own vlogs as a way of reflection.
yes, i definitely agree! i think as long as it stays fun for you that's all that matters. i also enjoy having vlogs to look back on :) & looking forward to keeping up with your vlogs/channel ☺
Keep up the great work! I've just started my "TH-cam Journey" and I'm getting GREAT insights from small channels like yours than the bigger channels. Your audience WILL find you, looking forward to seeing your growth.
thank you so much! large channels can be helpful but sometimes it feels like they've forgotten what it was like to have less than 1k subs haha. and congratulations on starting your channel 🎊can't wait to see how much you grow too!
Happy two years!! 🎉
thank you, Kalen! 🥰🤩
New subscriber here. Very interesting vlog. I look forward to seeing more. Peace 🕊️
thanks so much for being here! 🙂
Great video 🙏🏻🙏🏻
thank you! 🙂
Love your honesty throughout all your videos! I'm sure this happens in waves, even to these seemingly popular YTers. The right audience will find you: I find myself veering away from these historically "popular" channels where 50% of the videos are a BetterHelp sponsor segment (lol). I love the "slice of life" and authentic thoughts of the everyday human :) And as someone who was adjacently aquainted with you in high school, it is so nice to see who you are now, the values you hold, and the thoughts you craft and choose share with the world. Maintaining a TH-cam channel is a huge undertaking, one I have not pulled the trigger on, but you inspire me to pull the trigger in in 2024/2025 as I start WFH more while on postdoc (also to avoid filming in public LOL). If anything, I can put all the videos on private one day & just have them for myself, like looking back at old journal entries & seeing where your headspace was at at that time in your life. Whether you upload one video a week or once every few months, I love watching your videos, Emily! You're doing great :)
thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement, Laurie! i still think it's really cool that you found my channel through the TH-cam algorithm 😆 i definitely feel you on veering away from more "popular" channels (loling @ the better help thing because i thought people knew it was terrible!). i really enjoy smaller channels and creators who are authentic to themselves and where it doesn't feel like they're trying to sell me something 24/7. yes, definitely start your own channel if it's something you're thinking about and wanting to do! i like the idea of being able to private the videos if you ever don't want them up there but still keeping them for yourself. please let me know when you do start! i'd love to see your wfh/post-doc life or whatever you choose to share :)
I love this video! I enjoy all your videos, but it's nice to know someone else has similar thoughts on making TH-cam videos. The intro really set the tone 🔥Great to see all the reflections on your channel, I do like hearing your thoughts on things even if you don't label them semi structured + all the vlogs of you trying and learning things sound fun as well. This feels like a long comment but this video was so inspiring.
thank you so much, Bria! i appreciate all the feedback and am glad to hear that someone other than my parents enjoy hearing my thoughts 🤣 i enjoy all of your videos too and hope you keep creating ☺
also, i love long comments so this was perfect 😆
Hi there, A new subscriber here & I found your wee video really enjoyable. I also loved the music & although it is early am here, I did feel the urge to dance! lol We just returned home from visiting Ireland & honestly, it's one of my favourite countries hands down! I so love the Irish people, their welcoming nature & friendliness toward strangers, their honesty, humble approach to life, their humour & their warmth & kindness. Ireland is also a very beautiful country, just about everywhere! IMPO, I think it's really nice to have friends globally that you can actually go to see in person! This isn't something everyone has in their lives & many certainly don't get the chance to fly abroad to catch up with their friends. But equally, i'm also reminded here that sadly, some people don't have too many genuine or sincere friends in their respective lives, so when such friends are present, it's indeed a gift & it's always to be cherished & appreciated. Thanks for creating & sharing your personal experiences.
thanks so much for your sweet and thoughtful message! i'm glad you had a great trip to Ireland 🙂 and yes, i definitely agree. while it can be sad that my friends and i don't all live in one place it has been nice being able to travel and see new places + experience new cultures when seeing them. i'm very grateful that i have such friendships in my life. & i'm glad you enjoyed the music! 🥳
Just discovered your channel and I love it :) Keep going!
thank you so much! & same to you. i've been wanting to learn basic canto (and go to hong kong at some point) so i'm excited to watch your vlogs 🙂

aw that's so sweet, thank you! it's been busy but hoping to get back into it as this semester winds down. appreciate you sticking around 🥺
Such creative videos you’ve on this channel. I just subscribed!
thank you so much! 🙂
Sitting here grooving to your music!
haha i love it! finding music usually takes me a long time so i'm glad you're enjoying 🙂
I love that you set goals for the conference. Thank you for talking about how conferences can be isolating. Especially if you don't know anyone. Making friends or even networking can be so overwhelming. I've been to a conference at that hotel and got serious vertigo standing in the center of all those floors lol.
absolutely! it always seems like everyone already knows each other and it can often feel challenging (if not impossible) to break into conversations. & definitely feel you on the vertigo piece. the conference centers/hotels are usually super large and confusing with lots of fluorescent lights. not great lol 😅
So happy I found your channel! Really enjoying your videos :)
thank you so much for watching! i'm glad you're enjoying 🙂
Long live the Irish people who support the Palestinian rights
