I really liked the images of the Mary Magdalene & Materia Prima Oracles. By the way, I hope you are having an extraordinarily wonderful trip!🧡
Cancer moon 🫶 🫂
Sacred Destiny is great. I didn't expect to like it, but it's really easy to use and see the images.
Hope you’re having a great vacation and maybe finding some book to bring back home with you! Also, I didn't know you're a graphic designer, so am I! I have a major in graphic design and a minor in illustration 😄
if it's not too late..a historical mystery recommendation...the daughter of time by josephine tey.
I love your interpretation of the Paul Mescal shorts! The Shaun Tan books is great, I also love The Arrival by him, which is a silent graphic novel. Hope you enjoy your trip 🤗
ooo I have The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making but never got round to reading it, that could work for the long title one haha! I hope you enjoy Scotland and Ireland, I've never been to either which is terrible really as an englishman. T-Rex have some great songs.
I love Café Tacvba! "En el metro", "Eres", "Tengo todo", ... Such a great rock band.🎸 P.S. Have a wonderful time in Ireland and Scotland!🧡
Bahaha I love food descriptions in books with medieval-ish settings too 🤣😅❤️. They always make me want to eat really plain foods as if they're suddenly wildly exotic - like plain crackers with slices of cheese or something 😅. Ooh your Scotland/Ireland trip sounds fab!! Hope it's amazing!
Wow! What a huge list of reading for September! Thank you for the shoutout for "Framed! in September", your enthusiasm is infectious. What a perfect crossover with historathon. I'm sorry that you have such difficulties with travelling, I can understand you feeling frustrated. I hope that it all comes together well for you.
I just read “Bisclavret” by Marie de France. It was quite good fun 💜
"Verso alejandrino" (named for the "Libro de Aleixandre" epic poem), the verse of Spanish epic poetry!🧡P.S. "Cantiga" #1 (de Sta. Maria) on TH-cam: watch?v=M15c2ISsbA4
@@mimishimaineko1173 oh wow, thank you for this comment! Now I want to research the verso alejandrino. (I’ll go watch that music recommendation 😍)
@@marianamasbooksapparently that’s different from the Alexandrine in English and French poetry. And a bunch of European countries have their own takes on them. That’s so cool.
@@NicoleACottageWitch 🤯 that’s good to know!
Oh I read Rest is Resistance - didnt know there were cards too! Love your TBR! I've actually never watched The Titanic! 😬 Siân
@@pastorytime2683 yes! I keep forgetting to get the cards to show them while filming, I’ll remember to show them when I do my wrap up! ❤️ My grandma actually took me to the movies to see Titanic when it came out haha, I think I was the only 7 year old there 😝. A random fun fact I always find amusing is that there was a big Mexican tv channel that showed titanic every year on Christmas. So random. 😅 Anyway if you’re ever up for three blockbuster-y hours, it’s really good! 😂
I love Shaun Tan's art!
@@mattkean1128 I’ve seen he has multiple books! The art in this one is definitely amazing, I’m excited to read the stories too 😍
I’m so excited to see what shorties you pick up on your trip!
@@Bookchara yes! I’m excited for that one 🥳
I don’t remember food descriptions in The Gallant, but I’m so intrigued by what you shared about Medieval food descriptions! Unless it’s Martin’s food descriptions, most Medieval ones I’ve come across have been dark, stale bread and hard cheese. And yes, ale to soften the bread. Usually characters are hungry enough that it may as well be a gourmet meal. 😂
@@Johanna_reads Really?? I always associate medieval fantasy with those meals haha. Maybe I’m just thinking of Rote? Or maybe because I don’t like grim dark 😝🤷♀️ Now I have to give it a thought.
@@marianamasbooks I'm not talking about grimdark, just fantasy in general. But you've read much more historical fiction and fantasy that I have not read!
@@Johanna_reads i was thinking the opposite! You’ve definitely read way more fantasy and historical fiction! I mostly read historical nonfiction. Anyway I’m still keeping my choice for the prompt haha, since it’s a personal association 😅 And I’ve been wanting to read The Gallant since you recommended it!
I’m so excited to read Mio Cid!
I loved hearing your interpretations! This is a really neat practice, one I will have to pick up next time I go on a trip. I always feel that I pick the "wrong" one - but I think that's because I change decks like... every day. 😅 I read Tarot on Tarot similarly! The scenic deck goes on top, pips on bottom to contextualize the reading. I struggle with Wildwood. It's SO stunning, but I got tired of it by the end of the Year in the Wildwood journey. I'm hoping it'll get more play in winter. Giving it time to see if it wants to be worked with then. ❤ Thanks for sharing!
Yesss loved. Great choice. The last one was so good too. Love my trimmed John Bauer as well. .when is the trip?
The first two weeks of September!
Yes anatomy oracle video!!! and before the interviews my vote is capsule one… let’s goooo
@@RoseHoneyRitual I won’t spoil the ending haha 🤐 It was so fun to film. I’ll add the anatomy deck video to my list 🤓
Does the Mystical Moments Tarot have a miniature deck? (Ceccioli does) For Oracle, I like the Spirit Animals miniature deck (comes in a metal tin) by Coletter Baron-Reid. Please do more tarot videos! I love your BookTube content too.🧡 P.S. Don't forget to visit The Wyrd Shop in Edinburgh! (154 Canongate, Edinburgh EH8 8DD, UK)
Omg thank you! I do want to visit some witchy shops, so if you have more recommendations let me know! 💜 More decks should have mini versions! I was thinking a mini wildwood would be cute too! I'm currently very inspired film do tarot videos. (Especially now that I have my stand for filming face down 🙊 The set up was such a hassle before haha). Hopefully I'll have the time and energy to film them, life has been a lot lately. Thank you for watching, commenting and sending recommendations! 🤓
Now I have to watch those shorty September video! 💜
Yes!!! Shorty September is so fun!
You have excellent taste in decks!!! You listed so many that have been on my list for a long time. I totally get what you mean by decks with pips but an illustration in the middle throw you off. I feel that way about the Golen Tsar Tarot, so I end up usually the deck more for intuitive practice than for readings. I love pips so in theory, it should work, but I guess the lack of commitment either way gets to me! You showed a couple of mini Mariselle that I'm really interested in. It's always been a part of my fantasy self to carry a gorgeous mini deck of Marseille on me at times, ready for readings whenever. 💖 I only have two Mariseilles, CBD and Squidcake, and this video has me itching for Edoardo Dotti so badly!!! I very much enjoyed this video. I hope you have a fabulous trip! 😊
The Dottti is sooo beautiful! I've been very into the Italian decks, there's just something about them. 💖 The Golden Tarot of the Tsar is so beautiful!! I own that one and have never used it because I keep telling myself that I want to study it haha 🙈
It's a perfect candidate for a study deck! 💖
Stoked for part two. I think you could take playing cards for vibes! maybe take a deck that you want to hold the special meaning of the trip forever?
That last comment completely rewired my brain, I kid you not haha! I reworked my finalists and the way I want to approach part 2. I think I'll be interviewing and pairing. I'm excited to film it 🙊
@@marianamasbooks omgosh heheh I’m excited to seee
yay! i love when you do tarot videos. everytime you show that cat deck it makes me so happy :) - El oráculo del gato!
It's so cute and has great key words 🥰
I’m so excited for framed in September but now you’re making me want to take part in shorty September too. I’ve never participated before. I’m so looking forward to your tbrs! I’m onto Batallas en el Desierto, I love short fiction. I love your idea to use or show your tarot cards in a video and I love art and art history too! I’m sorry about all the health related inconveniences and worries you have to deal with. I hope you’re able to enjoy your trip in other ways. I’ve never been to Ireland, hope to someday, but I went to Edinburgh last year and it was so gorgeous. I understand your disappointment at not being able to film videos while you’re away on your trip. I find myself sometimes hoping I don’t have anything come up on the weekend so I can work on videos too 🙈 for fun! Especially during a fun readathon!
Thank you!! Yes! Shorty September is so fun! I'm glad you understand me in terms of the disappointment haha, it's just really exciting to take part in the book tube activities. When I say it's my happy place, I really mean it 🥰
Oh gosh i SO enjoyed this! Thank you for being such a supporter of Shorty September ✨🩳 I love the sound of Battles In The Desert, looks tricky to find here at the moment but I will have a hunt for it! Lots of love, Bert x
Travelling and your health does sound very difficult. ❤ And shorty approval - you can start whenever you want!
That's the thing with translated fiction :( it's often arder to find.
@@pastorytime2683 I have a big pile of books on my desk all ready to go! Hopefully I'll get around to filming my tar this week ☺
Hi Mariana. I find September is a really busy work month, with lots of weekend and late ight working for me. So if you shift some of your Shorty September into October I will get to read along with some short books this year and I'll (partially) participate for the first time. What a great idea to postpone but still join-in. I hope your holiday has some surprising and enriching experiences, to reward you for the extra challenges involved with travel.
@@angiejones5918 Thank you Angie! 💕 I really appreciate your comment. In my case I’m planning to move my reading up to August because in October I’m always in the mood for other kinds of books, like chunky classics or chunky fantasy 😅
thanks for this, really wanna know more about the middle bit in the venn diagram of conquistador invasion and literature ~ will check out the rec video =)
Thank you so much for making such a well thought out and informative recommendations video Mariana! I really appreciate how you decided to structure and analyze everything you wanted to share, it’s super helpful. I ended up learning so much about certain qualities and criteria to look for when reading about history and assessing historians’ writing! I think I'll start with Conquistadors and Aztecs and go from there. All the books you talked about sound interesting and worthwhile in different ways based on your assessments, which will be helpful to keep in mind while reading them.
Oh, this is so much fun! I love this idea and can't wait to see more ideas from you!
Thanks!! It was a super fun reading and video to do! And it was great advice, it's been working great. I've been wanting to do an update video, but I have so many video ideas that I don't get to a lot of them 😅
Indigenous Science and Technology looks cool. And kind of glad I'm not the only one who has been having disappointing medieval books. Great vid
Malintzin does sound like a badass, I bet someone could write a great historical fiction from her perspective.
There are many! Sadly she's always painted as the tragic woman who fell in love with Cortés. (Or as a traitor, which is the official story that's been told about her. We even have a word in México that comes from her name, that is used for people who hate Mexican things). So she's either a traitor or a tragic figure. Hopefully now that historians are starting to change her narrative, someone will write a historical figure that portrays her adequately.
@@marianamasbooks That's a shame
@@AaronReadABook it is!
Oooo I loved this! I had Fifth Sun and Conquistador by Buddy Levy on my TBR but it kinda sounds like I should start with Conquistadors and Aztecs!
I hadn't heard of the Buddy Levy book (or of the author, for that matter!), I'll look into it, I'm always looking for books about the topic written in English (or translated) so that I can recommend them 🤓
Great video!
Thank you!! 🥰
"This is just for fun. No one is going to make you marry your fictional crush. The people who have fictional crushes know that these characters aren't real. We know that you can't physically marry them." But do we, Mariana? Do we really? Stop harshing our collective mellow.😅Loved the tag!
Sadly I have to speak up and advocate for us fictional crushers, because everyone else harshes on our mellow 😂 (Hopefully I used that expression correctly haha!). Thanks! It was fun to film 🤓
I'm so glad you made this because I'm really interested in this subject since The Rest Is History did their series on it, they have a great respect for Restall but I think they said that his utter hatred of Cortés clouds it a bit if I remember correctly. They really liked Fifth Sun but the author was a guest host so they are friends. The Rinke might be what I'm after!
I agree 100% As much as I loved the book (and as much as I'm not a Cortés fan), I did think Restall's lack of Nuance regarding Cortés can diminish his other arguments. Rinke's book is great, I definitely think it's the best introduction to the topic. General enough and specific enough, with great context. I really need to listen to The Rest is History, several people have mentioned it!
@@marianamasbooks They did their longest every series on Cortes and it's well worth a listen. They did an earlier Aztec one too with Camilla Townsend. The Rinke book is £22 even on kindle here which is way too much, I will have to look for it at random places or go with Restall which is £3
@@AaronReadABook I hate how expensive history books are! 😫 Luckily I didn’t have to buy any of these. I got one through Kindle Unlimited and the other three were available in the audio subscription I use. I’ve been wanting to buy the Restall hardcover for my bookshelf, but I’m waiting for it to be on sale or something 😅
I'm so glad you enjoyed Tu sueño so much. It's one of my best books of the year, too. It seems like Muerte súbita is available from Germany again, so I'll try to get my hands on a copy. It was actually the first book of his that I ever had on my radar. It sounds even weirder than I was aware of, though. 😅
Cortezuma! Why is that such a good ship name lol, sorry. Thank you for the shoutout! It makes me happy to know I motivated you to get to Cartucho! You’re the reason I picked it up :) How you described looking to historical fiction to place you into the setting is what I love most about historical fiction. And yes, some people prefer when the story is not about a historical figure or event so they’re not worried about accuracy. I really like history but I’m not a history buff so I don’t tend to have the issue of worrying about inaccuracies (and that taking me out of a story.) I do try to remain skeptical about accuracy to some extent and also try to find trustworthy authors, like you said. I didn’t know the current english translation of Cartucho is considered to be bad but that makes sense because the language is very regional and probably tricky to translate well. I hope an indie press picks it up too. Charco Press please! Nellie Campobello sounds fascinating, there should be a book about her and Muerte Súbita sounds hilarious!
@@karlalikestoread omg right??? My thought while editing was: did I just invent a really problematic ship?? 😂 I don’t know why the accuracy thing bothers me in books because it doesn’t bother me at all in period shows and movies! It also doesn’t bother me in historical romances or lighter books like that, I think it’s only in the ones with real figures and events. (But again, it doesn’t bother me with shows and movies so I don’t know what that’s about! 😝). Both Muerte súbita and Tu sueño imperios han sido are super funny! 😝
I need that Kelly Bishop memoir so bad!!! Gilmore Girls is still the best TV show.
Yes! It’s a show like no other. There’s literally nothing that can reproduce the exact Gilmore Girls vibe 😅 When you’re in a GG mood, you’re in a GG mood.
Such a good video! Ive added the Rinke book to my TBR! Have you read/do you have any thoughts on Conquistadores by Fernando Cervantes? I have this in my goodreads tbr, but im always weary of the perspective i may encounter in books like this..
I hadn’t heard of that Cervantes book but I just looked it up and it sounds great! It has a blurb by Matthew Restall, which for me now is a guarantee of a perspective I can align with. I’ve added it to my list 🔥
Good list. My favorite being: When Moctezuma met Cortes by Matthew Restall. Excellent book. More than just facts it gives you a good perspective on flawed spanish thinking when they wrote their chronicles. Must read before reading anything else. Most other books use spanish chronicles as their main source. Knowing how distorted those accounts are is important. Runners up: Guns, germs and steel, and 1491, 1493.
Im glad we agree! I also think the Restall book is a must 🔥 That’s why the discussion of sources was one of the evaluation criteria 🙌🏼 and why I think Rinke’s introduction is so good, because it clearly explains all the problems with the Spanish sources. (And the post-conquest indigenous sources, which are problematic as well but many people take as fact just because they’re indigenous, without knowledge of the political context). I hadn’t heard of Guns, Germs and Steel, I’ll look it up!
@@marianamasbooks guns, germs and steel is a big picture perspective of the years you covered in your pocast. excellent and short.
@@Obscuros88 thanks for the recommendation!
Where in Empire of Silence does Hadrian change his opinion for "cool things to happen"? Did we read the same book? It is purely character driven where Hadrian's decisions drive the plot and not the other way around.
For example Hadrian’s dislike of violence. At the beginning of the book he despises violence so much that he actually leaves the coliseum in the middle of an ongoing fight, even if he knows it’ll get him in trouble. And then he actually ends up fighting in a coliseum. I just think it’s a strange choice from the author to have your character (who is supposed to despise violence on principle), end up fighting and training fighters. It goes against everything he supposedly believes in. He could have had Hadrian do whatever other low paying (less visible!) activity. The unregistered assistant in a clinic, a bartender, a trash collector, whatever. But myrmidon was, I guess, cooler than trash collector 😅 I don’t think a story being character-driven should be justification for inconsistency in the set parameters of the story.
@@marianamasbooks Well people change especially teenage boys who are so full of themselves like Hadrian. And Hadrian chooses violence after he has been living in the streets in poverty for a couple of years, have his gf die to disease and join a gang where he watches his gangmembers getting sentenced so a case can be made here for character progression. Moreover he was never truly peaceful, he beat up Crispin before he left home.
@@tasosalexiadis7748 It would have been interesting to see that explored. I know this was a debut so maybe in future books his pov writing is improved. Though as I said in my review, there were many problems for me with the book, it just wasn’t for me.
@@marianamasbooks Fair enough. I only object that the main character changed his opinion artificially for the plot. I don't think that happened in Empire of Silence.
That cover with the tarot card reference is great! I’ve put _You Dreamed of Empires_ on hold - there’s a long queue ahead of me at the library - because the premise sounds interesting, and the historical research behind it awesome. (I’ll decide to read it or not after I’ve had the chance to give it a glance.)
I do the same with books! I need to sample a bit of the writing before I decide if I want to read it.
Well I'm looking up Alvaro Enrigue!
Yesssss!! So good! 🔥 I’m currently reading Sudden Death by him and it’s also so weird and fantastic and hilarious.
You Dreamed of Empires sounds so interesting! I've added it to my TBR!🤓 Also that was an elegant review of Empire of Silence. I have a feeling if/when I try to review it on my channel it's going to turn into a ran. 😅 And I love that you figured out a way to make two separate midyear freakout tags. 😂
Haha I purposefully tried to review it without ranting (mostly because of filming time 😂), but I could have easily gone for just plain rant 😂 You Dreamed of Empires is so good!!! 🔥 I’m currently reading another of his books. (I’m excited to film the historathon edition 😂)
Excellent job, Mariana! I love the part about the Spanish being among the first generation of avid readers. I wonder how much human sacrifice played a role in Cortes gaining local allies. My understanding is that the Aztecs had really increased the rate of sacrifices and I assume the victims had to be pulled from the Aztec’s conquered tributary civilizations.
Yes! I loved that fact about them being readers, it gives such context (and is also fun trivia🙈). That chapter in Thomas’ book is really cool. I learned that many places (like the Patagonia), are named after places from one of the famous Spanish chivalric novels. (Amadis). There was even a captain who got authorization from the emperor to launch an expedition to search for the fountain of youth. 😅 In terms of the sacrifices, I personally don’t think that played a part because the Spanish local allies practiced Sacrifices as well! They were done all over Mesoamerica. I think the sacrifices have always been ramped up in history because they’re gruesome and interesting (like the blood eagle with the Vikings 🙈), but I think the real explanation is much more mundane: politics and power. I read a very interesting discussion about the long standing Mesoamerican tradition of making alliances and switching sides. I definitely want to read more about both topics: sacrifices and Mesoamerican politics, because i want to understand both more!
Well done Mariana, great video and storytelling. Definitely need to look up some of the tangents such as the story of Cortes seedlings his way to a command position.
So fun! As I was reading I was thinking there could be a tv series about it, it’s a literal cat and mouse chase through Cuba, involving ships, poison and sabotage.
Wow, this was so fascinating. Thank you so much for making this video and sharing your insights Mariana! I’m excited for part 2!
I’m glad you found it interesting! I think I’ll film the book recommendations video and then part 2. Though I also want to film my midyear freakout tag! 😝
@@marianamasbooksAh! Too many video ideas, too little time! I’ll happily watch whichever you’d like to work on next :)
This video is awesome! I can't wait for part 2...and for the book recommendations, of course!
I’m glad you liked it! Hopefully I’ll be able to film the recommendations this week! 🤞🏼🙌🏼
