MV Hebridean Isles is a passenger car ferry built in 1985 for Caledonian MacBrayne and was originally designed for the Uig Triangle service between Uig, Tarbet and lochmaddy. She is a ferry of many firsts. Not only was she the first of the fleet to be launched side first, she was also the first to be named by royalty when HRH the Duchess of Kent launched her in 1986. Thanks for the wee trip to Arran this evenig. I'm sitting in front of my fire and shortly will be in bed as it's nearly 10pm here down under.
Excellent and interesting video. 👍
Thanks for sharing. I worked at Cochrane Shipbuilders during the building of Hebridean Isles and was fortunate to be onboard for her sea trials, the only time I managed to sail on her.
L❤❤❤
It's the same in Scotland than in Norway; the car alarm is on, maybe a sign will help... Nice video, as always!
@@varrefjell Thanks!
Excellent and interesting video. 👍
Thanks! 👍
Cool
Nice to see a railway station so close to the ferry terminal. Very practical. After watching a number of ferry videos from Scotland lately, I have noticed that the ferry routes are on average longer than here in Norway.
I must say, most of the CalMac ferries looks much better than the ferries we have here in Norway. We still have a few good looking ferries in Norway, but most of them are gone. I don’t care for the new electric ferries taking over. Electric is fine, but make it beautiful. Thanks for making these wonderful videoes and sharing them with the world 😊 Cheers from Norway!
@@Trond_travels thanks! 👍
great video makes you feel you are on the coach

This is the future.
She is a big gal!
Where does that one go to?
@@clairegregory142 I believe it's the Mallaig to Armadale (Isle of Skye) route that MV Loch Bhrusda operates.
Brilliant stuff from the Taxi drivers 👏👏👏👏👍💙😊🇬🇧😎
They flasks should be on London, thats where all the shite goes.
Why was it flashing the lights
Not quite sure if I am being honest, it might have been my camera that made it look like it's flashing.
Oh 🤣🤣🤣@@Scottish_Transport_Explorer
are they going to be used on the Ayr line or nah?
I doubt it as apparently ScotRail ain't interested in them according to a friend of mine.
Only the lower deck was nice. The top deck was manky and gross.
Are these replacing the 380’s?
I doubt ScotRail would replace the modern 380s with units that date back to the late 1980s. So they definitely aren't be replacing them.
@@Scottish_Transport_Explorer thankfully, 380’s are my fav train
@@Scottish_Transport_Explorer would be so sad to see them go so early
Thanking you very much for sharing my friend!
"the legroom (on the coach) is poor" - That's a pretty useless statement to anyone who doesn't know how tall you are. Maybe something like "I'm 1m75cm (about average for a male) and find the seats cramped"? On the ferry; the usual Audiots strike again I hear.
Thanks for the feedback. I don't know my exact height but I'll definitely add that to future videos once I figure that out.
Salut my friend super Train super video subscribe subscribe ...
Interesting video but please check the spelling in your captions, a number of mistakes.
Thanks and sorry for the spelling 👍
Great video. 👍I always like sailing on the Cal Mac ferries!
We are going to Arran in two weeks, wondering if it will be Ardrossan as usual or Troon! I am sure the ferries will let us know😂
Right now the normal MV Isle of Arran sailings are operating from Ardrossan. However MV Alfred sailings are operating from Troon to Brodick until mid August. Anyways I hope you're enjoy the trip over 😃
@@Scottish_Transport_Explorer thank you👍😊
In Answer to your Question though it’s not the Busiest Route, the 900 Service between Glasgow & Edinburgh is by far the Busiest with Buses running every 15Minutes at Peak Time.
It’s more Expensive, however it’s worth It !!
Further More, The Seating on the G9 Service has Leather Seating with Tables on the Upper Deck !!
A Better idea is Too Get the G9 “City Link Gold” Service Glasgow to Aberdeen, iv Travelled on it Many Times over the Years, you Get Refreshments on Board & It’s a Much Shorter Journey time as it’s a Direct Glasgow to Aberdeen service with No Stops, Apart from a Driver Change at Broxden on the Outskirts of Perth !!
First
Right at the start we have one of those trainspotting moments when you don't know where to look. A Class 66 on the main line or a BRCW type two on the Branch. Er...
Just hate it when that happens!! 😭
Yeah let’s be really proud of how this monument is five years late and millions of pounds over budget . . . .its hard to see how Fergusson Marine would ever get a contract to build a surfboard let alone a ship but that’s what happens when you have a goverment owned shipyard with poiliticians running the day to day operations to many dodgy deals being done to screw the Scottish tax payer.
Dio mio! Yes a fair rossing. But Rothewsay is symbol of rhe decline of scottish seaportwsz. All Nescaffy, rets0s closed, shops hairaaing, prom shambolic cc.
I didn’t know this route existed, planning a wee trip to Lochranza and thought I would only have the option of train to ardrosan. Thanks for sharing this way.🏴😃
If you're traveling by Citylink, I would recommend going on an weekend were you got a longer connection time. Because there's a 10 minute walk between the bus stop at templehill road and the terminal building at Troon. You can also travel by train to Troon and get a shuttle bus that leaves from St Meddans Street bus stop under the railway bridge which takes you to the terminal building.
No problem Gmctedd 😄👍
I note that you travelled on a weekend when the services connect together well. If you were to try and travel on a weekday you would not manage. The bus arrives at Troon 15 mins before the scheduled departure time. This does not get you to the ship before the last check in time. Additionally, on the return, the bus leaves Troon 10 mins after the vessels scheduled arrival time. You do not have time to get off the ship and to the bus. I went down a few days back to watch Alfred arrive, she was slightly late, this meant the bus which people might have already bought a ticket for left 5 mins before the ship even fully berthed. The weekday schedule needs drastically rethought as I don’t think anyone actually gave the timings any thought to begin with.
Unfortunately the 922 doesn't really link up with the ferry, which is just stupid. There's no wonder why the service haven't been well used, if it doesn't even link in with the ferry and that they don't even drop you off outside the terminal building. Unless Citylink improves the service, I really doubt that this service is going to last into 2025.
Excellent and interesting video 👍
Thanks 👍👍
It's nice to put the delays and cost overruns to one side for once and enjoy a beautiful Clyde-buit ferry being launched. I look forward to travelling on her at some point in the future.
Couldn't have said it better myself!!
Very good son! ❤
Been on Clansman to Colonsay a few times at £15 return. Scenery a bit more interesting on that sail.
Reclining seats on coaches are terrible for the person behind. Shouldn't exist.
My first observation is that this service is being run on a shoestring. The walk from the bus to the terminal and from the terminal to the vessel is fine for a young person like yourself, but I would find it a major disadvantage (65+). Also all access to the passenger areas is by stairs (or companionways). A major stumbling block for peeople with any walking disability. No, this service is not for the likes of me.
Luckily today (19th of May) Citylink has announced that their 922 service will now operate into Troon ferry terminal and to pick-up and drop-off people at the terminal building itself.
@@Scottish_Transport_Explorer Well, that is some good news, but it still leaves the trek between the terminal and the vessel. Not to be contemplated on a wet, windy day. and there is still the access to the passenger accomodation to be considered. Certainly not step-free.
Agree the coach could drop you nearer the ferry, which could at least have a coffee machine onboard.
The Alfred has the facilities but are not allowed to provide them as per the contract. For such a quick journey, it is hardly required.
Ive never seen the ferry on that side of the pier where the timber ship or Waverley berths. Glad to see some of the badly designed outdoor seating being replaced by something more comfortable!
We are regular visits to Arran and were there for a long weekend last weekend. The ferry service is in a real mess at the moment and it was the first time we had sailed across from Troon. We went back to Ardrossan though. The terminal building and slipway seemed so far away from where the cars wait to board the ferry. Then it seemed to take ages- some cars had to turn around inside the car deck as they go on at Troon in through the stern. The lorries had to reverse off the ferry at Brodick. Also as it was so windy, it took ages for the boat to dock in Brodick. Also at Troon the foot passengers had to board via the car deck. It wasn’t ideal but I thought it was better than having no ferry at all. It must be so frustrating and a nightmare for the people who rely on the ferries for work and those who live on Arran.
When the ferry does move to Troon after the new ferries enter service, there will be a gangway at Troon. Plus having Troon as a secondly mainland port is far better than the ferry going all the way to Gourock in bad weather.
On one of it's first sailings from Troon, the Seacat crashed into a concrete post . I don't think that there was much damage.
Apologies, I got that wrong. That happened in 1999 it seems.
Don't worry about it lol. In the video I was wrong about both Seacat & P&O operated the Troon to Larne route. Because Seacat actually operated between Troon and Belfast, not Larne.
@@Scottish_Transport_ExplorerSeacat operated from the berth the Alfred is sat on in your video. It was a great service when it actually ran despite some ropey infrastructure.
You made a mistake with the river clyde its not the river cycle 😂
Sorry about that 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why are foot passengers left to board ship, with little or no ameanities. Safety dies appear whennearing the ship. The tourist boards/ local councils note; families on budgets, walkers, hickers etc seem not to be included, ' travelling is an exciting part of a holiday', not a poor experience, that needs, to be overcome. Note Britany Ferries, have the same regimes, so it's not ferries ib Scotland
Addendum, first line, Safety does appear, when ,,,
Addendum, first line. Safety does appear prior to board the vessel
Clansman is still my favourite. The first thing to do after boarding is get on deck to watch the departure. You get a good look at Oban from there and as you sail away there's a point where I feel like the land is leaving us, that's the point where I can relax. On weekdays there's the possibility of not hearing car alarms going off all the way to Coll. If you're lucky. After an hour and fifty minutes I go for a full Scottish breakfast and sit on the port side of Mariners and watch Tobermory glide past. It definitely gets a bit choppy when we get out of the Sound of Mull. In bad weather you can watch various crew members scampering around with a mop and bucket as the smell of disenfectant and vomit hand heavy in the air. The problem with Coll is that it's difficault to bearth in a strong southwesterly wind but it's a grand place, I go there as often as I can. The food is slightly more expensive than the mainland because of the expense of importing stock from the mainland. The hotel serves Jarl from Fyne Ales Brewery which is an excellent beer although the hotel owners can't hide their distain for dog owners and their pets when you call in to the public bar. Finally, my girlfriend leaves Coll orientated in the exact same way as she was when we arrived. Fun fact about Coll: the very last cats eye on the road network was removed a couple of years ago. It was between the Tellers of Tales and RSPB centre at Totronald. I have a photot of it taken in 2022 but when I visited in November 2023 that area had been patched up.
Thanks for the comment. After travelling on MV Clansman for the first time back in July, I can say that she's definitely one of my favourite vessels. When I first travelled to Coll I unfortunately only had two hours on the island but hopefully this year I can spend longer on the Island by travelling there on a Wednesday because MV Clansman continues to Castlebay which of course would allow me to spend longer on Coll. Sorry for the late reply btw :)
Edit: Seacat operated between Troon & Belfast and P&O officially stopped opening from Troon in 2016
Seacat was Troon to Belfast. P&O ended the Troon to Larne route in 2016.
Thanks sorry for the mistake 👍👍
