I was 21 when the movie released and this song was a standard in all jam sessions and parties. Although we had to figure out the chords by ear back then because not a lot of resources were available for hindi/bollywood songs. I have been playing the E, A, B5 combination for decades now even though i knew there is so much more happening and never bothered to figure it out. Thanks for the detailed breakup. I have always been looking for someone to show what an amazing song it was. It was also probably the first time, a sad song was made in a major scale, in guitar and having a hopeful cheery vibe to it. That just broke the trope of how a song about death could be approached. Rahman truly outdid himself in this film.
