Yes I saw this in my master degree training. It was part of what I practiced... our sessions were first sound recorded later video recorded via two way mirror. I t was useful. I wemt on for a doctorate in clinical psych and became a eventually a tenured professor.

"To experience his/her meanings more fully and to assist in the moving forward in his/her experience" and "To locate power in the person, not the therapist", put these words on your wall.

would have been useful had he referenced the social worker by name. Its also curious about the culture where the attendees are sitting on the floor, like children, and I wonder whether that was thought about when they set the scene for the lecture.

Yeah feels a tad cult like the way they are sitting or maybe just a chilled/hippie way of listening to a lecture.

Substituting the confessional with a holy father figure to phycoanalysis. Freud turned against his Jewish faith to another kind of religion to improve human condition.

This video is fantastic but also summarizes what the 1960s was all about. You can feel it especially when you see how attentively the students listened.

It’s the only form of therapy that can work. First and foremost it is non- judgemental and tries to understand the other in all the fullness of his/ her experience.

What if you’re counseling a narcissist?? How do you give such a person empathy when they have none

This theory would help foster the Unconditional acceptance of the client. Accepting them as they are. Thus, hypothetically, reducing conditions of worth (I am only valuable if I'm above others; I am lovable as long as I am always right, etc...). Thus, the person would be able to process any potential underlying insecurities in a non-judgmental environment, and then develop their empathy and enhance the quality of their relationships

Knowing that at the base of their essentiallity they are the same as all others might help. It's harder (maybe) to provide acceptance towards them, but they are the ones who needs it the most and it's hardest for them to get. Another note: empathy doesn't mean you must or have to agree with their statements or position. It means you want understand them as they understand themselves. And see them as they see themselves without merging and mixing with them. Remembering it's them and theirs. Providing those conditions you may give them a chance to see themselves for real for the first time. And also, it doesn't mean no conflicts. Safe conflict is another possibility to meet them as humans.
