Laid back casual tech videos and PC experiments.
Welcome!
This channel is a place where I record and upload my experiments with computers, whether it's revisiting older hardware and seeing how it stacks up today, comparing new baselines to old flagships, or trying to game on computers that were never meant to game, I document them all and post them here for your enjoyment.
I like to get a video out once a week, but if things take a bit, it might be once a fortnight. Whenever I get something of a decent quality done, it's released to you!
So if that sounds good to you, why not stick around for a while?
Any questions or queries can be sent to my discord (@eternaliam) or my email listed below:

Pentium vs Core i9: Can you game with 2 cores?
In today's episode, we put the Pentium G7400 against the Core i9 12900KS, and see just how big the difference is from a low end CPU to a high end CPU. How does Intel's final Pentium shake up?

courage
My new M3 Air's Geekbench 6 CPU score was almost double my 2019 iMac 3.6 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with Radeon Pro Vega 48 8 GB However when I ran the GPU test my i9 scored 49996 in the OpenCL test, while my M3 scored 31827. That does not make sense to me. Is the i9’s Pro Vega that much better than the M3’s video?? Metal scores were even worse for the M3 at 49285 vs 73292 for the i9. What gives?
This is correct, Apple Silicon takes Intel Macs to school on compute and video encoding. GPU wise it still has a long ways to go. Slowly but steadily Apple is making gains but an M3 Air with no fan is absolutely not going to beat a desktop class Vega 48 in graphics performance.
@ Finally an answer! Thank you. Would it be safe to say the M3 7
Would it be safe to say that the M3 Pro and M4 Pro models would out perform the Vega 48 ?
now give us a cost per fps graph
Good idea, will incorporate it in similar videos in the future. 👍
@ i just noticed you had 300 subs. keep up the good work!
What if - An ice bucket core in the middle. Beer time😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I mean in terms of industrial design I'd say yes, this was the last big risk Apple took (to date). But in terms of the underlying engineering, Apple ditching Intel has had a seismic effect on the entire computer industry, whether you use Apple hardware or not. I'd call that a pretty daring move.
100% agree, their silicon has been a huge gamble that’s paid dividends and the advancements of Windows on ARM most likely doesn’t happen if not for Apple making the leap. From a design perspective however for the box they were limited to given the hardware they had to pack into this thing, this was a huge risk that unfortunately didn’t pay off. It’s like the spiritual successor to the PowerMac G4 Cube which makes it so unfortunate that it had the same fate. In retrospect it feels like a statement piece that Apple could do something different in the post Jobs era.
Short answer, no
CPUs have improved computational power at a terrible rate, these cpus arent far behind new gen cpus,,, the problem is the bus speed and memory speed and pcix access n such like that have improved greatly------ so for some types of gaming, older cpus may not be totally garbage yet
I agree, these things are still plenty capable for gaming. Beyond that though, in use cases such as rendering video and cpu intensive benchmarks these things have aged appropriately. If I wasn’t into the whole film/youtube jazz I’d probably would still be rocking a 2600K haha
It would’ve been dope if it had dual fan. The top one is good to draw out hot air, but if it had another one at the base to blow cold air updward, it would definitely improve temperatures
2014 i7 16gb and 2 SSDs …. It’s not slow and I am running the current OSs…
I don’t believe the higher spec models of this machine were bad, the base model however was atrocious.
Good video, chapters would really help to be able to jump around and watch the different games again! Thanks for testing the 2600k with a beefy GPU.
Thanks! Also great suggestion, I’ll be sure to go through my videos and make chapters for each game tested.
its not the fastest on there is the 12 core cpu version
This is the 12 Core. I made a mistake and misspoke. :/
You also can install Xeon E5-2697V2 in this machine.
That is what was in here. I made a typo and misspoke :/
What game was that with the ball
rocket league
Ironically, I feel like the Trash Can design would have worked really well for Apple Silicon / the Ultra chips
Yes!
Agree, the Apple Studio is in may ways the successor to this machine.
I would love to see a maxed Mac compatible GPU like a 6950 XT or even a 5700 XT. Not bad for the hardware of that age. The RX 580 is most definitely holding it back. Nice video!
Thank you! Sometime in the near future I'll see if I can get around to getting a nicer card in there and see how things fare.
i actual have two gtx 690 cards for 4 way SLI
I bought a used 2014 Mac mini (2.8GHz Dual Core i5, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD) for about $600 3 years ago as a desktop for a family member. Yes, I know it's not the darling of the benchmark crowd, but it's a capable machine and more than enough for web browsing, document editing and lite number crunching. The SSD is limited to SATA3 speeds (and uses nearly every byte of that speed) but feels fast. And on the rare occasion it needs booting, it's pretty quick. It just feels performant and capable and will probably continue to serve for several more years until it breaks or I find a decent M1/M2 for a similar price. I agree that the base model was a dog, but IMO the 2014 Mac mini fits the bill nicely for many real-world uses.
I don’t disagree with that, I just find it borderline insulting how Apple sold this thing and thought “yea that’s good”
@@eternaliam Same here, especially on the base model, which was just a weak offering. Also I think Apple going down the road of non-replaceable RAM and storage was a terrible call, although it doesn't seem to have hurt them financially. Not being able to expand the computer as needs change means spending lots more for hardware you don't need up front but may need later.
@@sfperalta Yea, it’s unfortunate but it’s what they’ve been working towards for a long time now. Apple wants people to buy the higher spec models from them rather than selling low spec models and have users upgrade it for a fraction of the price. The only machine they currently sell that allows users to upgrade components costs double of what an equal spec Mac Studio costs. It’s just their way of making it not feasible so you either upgrade to a new machine every few years or just buy a high spec one upfront.
hey bro i have i3 2100 and gtx 750 ti should i buy i7 2700k ? i don't use for some hard works i only play cs2 on lowest setting with my pc i have 20-70 fps and i want 150-200 fps will i get you think?

I miss my 2700k quite a bit
As long as avx2 not required it can run
Idk i got M3 2024 Macbook air but thinking to return it. Its only 8gt, renders pretty ok but 8gt just not enough plus i hate than m-series doesnt support eGPUs.. So maybe getting a 2019 Macbook Pro with 32gt Ram instead 🤔
Well I don’t think it’s necessarily a good comparison to compare an entry level M3 to a top end i9 MBP. I also can’t recommend the Intel Macs given they’re almost 5 years old and how thermally inefficient they are. You’ll hit thermal throttling well before you can utilize the full potential of whatever GPU you’re thinking of connecting to it.
@@eternaliam any alternatives to eGPUs for M series macs that come to mind? Other than cloud rendering. I mean, i just cant afford atm a 32gt M3, not even the 16gt, just got this one because it was on special. But yea +200e for the extra ram is pretty lame 😫 If you were to choose between 8gt brand new M3 or an i9 32gt with 3D rendering in mind, which would be a better pick?
and good point about the heating, it is true, intel macs do heat up quite a bit especially during rendering 🤔
@@alediazofficial2562 If your renders are taxing enough to simply not complete on the M3 due to running out of RAM, I still couldn’t justify downgrading to an Intel machine. Simply put, if they’re possible to do on the Apple Silicon machine, keep the M3. If not, find a temporary solution and replace your M3 with a higher spec Apple Silicon Mac later on. (Cloud rendering) New M4s with 16GB of RAM at the base model are expected at the end of the month, and trading in an Apple Silicon model will yield a higher trade in value than whatever used Intel Mac you find. I can’t in good conscience recommend the Intel MacBook simply because it’s just a straight up inferior machine, and you’ll likely end up having to sell it anyways once A: Apple releases new OS versions for ARM only, or B: Thermal throttling becomes too big of an issue. It’s not an ideal answer, I know. But it seems the workload you have exceeds the capabilities of the machine you bought.
@@eternaliam Hey I appreciate the response and indeed useful insight. I had ignored the heating issues, I had only previously owned a mid 2011 iMac and late 2013 macbook air, these heated up quite a bit, I assumed later iterations would fix this. Guess they kinda did now with M series. I was also considering of just to keep the 2024 m3 macbook air till I save an extra 800€, sell or trade in and get a 16gt one. Thanks again for the reply and the videos!
if i told people on other games that my current rig is a prebuilt hp machine with a i7 2600k and a rtx 3050 they would always say: wtf
I actually have two trashcan Mac Pros. I acquired the first in late 2022, and the second a couple of months ago. I've upgraded both with 64 GB of RAM, NVMe SSDs (2 TB in one, and 1 TB in the other) and 3 GHz ten-core CPUs, and they run extremely well. I'm especially proud of the CPU upgrades; it's fiddly but straightforward, and the non-standard CPUs I installed are better-value than Apple's official configurations. You could order a 3 GHz Mac Pro from Apple, but with eight cores; the 3 GHz CPUs I installed have ten! I run 10.14 Mojave on my Mac Pros (and most of my Intel Macs), and I run my main (2 TB) trashcan with a Blackmagic eGPU that I found for a bargain price. While the eGPU's Radeon Pro 580 graphics performance is significantly lower than my 2010 cheesegrater Mac Pro's RX 580 (likely due to the Thunderbolt 2 bottleneck), the eGPU still performs much better than the internal D300s.
Don’t doubt it runs better, these FirePros even on the high end of what was offered simply haven’t aged well at all. They’re still capable, but not of much. I’ll revisit this machine down the line with an eGPU and see if there’s any other options to squeeze some performance out of this machine, as I said I think this is still a very good machine if you look past the GPUs.
Nice! I’m planning on getting a second one. I have a 12 core, 64 GB, D700 and 1TB SSD one. I was thinking of downgrading to the 10 core, but given the very little difference in clock speed between the two I don’t know if it’s worth it. Also I’d like to upgrade to NVME. I heard I can get double read and write speeds compared to what I get now. How is your 10 core holding up?
@@MFEeee My trashcan's ten-core CPU runs extremely well. :) I wouldn't say there's a 'very little difference in clock speed' between the ten and twelve-core CPUs - 300 MHz (3 GHz vs 2.7 GHz) is small but significant. My trashcan still has the base D300 GPUs, which I'm not interested in upgrading. I'd just be replacing a very specialised workstation GPU for another, and I've heard that the D500s and D700s tend to fail. Besides, my eGPU is a great upgrade.
How about an egpu? Something like a 5900x, if I’m not mistaken
That’s something I considered doing in a part 2 later on. When making this video i presumed eGPUs would have very limited to no support at all on these machines but found out soon after uploading these things can handle a pretty decent eGPU. Thought of making some sort of supercharging type video or something like “Building the Ultimate Trash Can Mac Pro” but will have to do some research as to what the absolute best thing this machine can handle. Definitely will be something I make though.
@@eternaliam I read somewhere that the 5000 series gpu is the top gpu the trash can can handle, but recently heard there are some online that are taking advantage of the AMD 6000 series. I think I gotta look into it more, especially since I’m a huge fan of Apple. It just seems like Apple has been passed over in terms of innovation. Unheard of just 10 years ago it seems. But nice video my friend. Keep it up
Misspoke and made a typo at 2:00, was reading up about the other specs of these machines and accidentally wrote 1620. Meant to type 2697, this was the 12 Core, not the 4 Core. Sorry! 🫠
Great video, im changing my i9 for an M3 and I was thinking it isnt worth it until I see your video. The i9 is unusable thinking in a portable device, it dies after 2-3 hours of use in profesional tasks, I hope M3 will be much better.
Glad I could be of help, the battery life of the M3 is absurd compared to the i9, I could go through almost a week of class forgetting about charging it before I’m notified the battery is low, and even when doing things such as editing 4K video, not only does it stay cool, but the battery doesn’t drain that much faster than if it wasn’t. You’ll love it.
My i7 2600k Motherboar Lenovo is6xm rev1.0 16GB RAM DDR3 GTX750ti It's a beast in 2024
Sandy Bridge should be renamed to Fine Wine with how well it’s aged
The Intel laptops are next to unusable. IDK how we ever suffered with them, the tech feels like it's from the 90s now. Mine's on my lap right now, it's a literal space heater and the battery lasts a few hours at best. The whole thing is hot to the touch just watching TH-cam. The M1 I have never even spins up the fans unless I'm cranking out some hardcore processor-intensive work.
you didn’t need to do that to remove s mode 💀
I used 20% of the brain
2600k, celeron 300a, q6600. the goat trilogy
Starfield would have put the 2600k on his knees 😂
So I’ve heard, I’ll be sure to incorporate it in future tests 👍
This chip was the reason the Intel i5s started having 6 cores, it wasn't till April 2018 that i5's now had a 6 cores, 6 threads, being able to finally compete with amd. (A year later after the release of the Ryzen 5 1600 and variants.). Remember that we had 7 GENERATIONS OF INTEL WITH 4/4 TO 4/8 CORE/THREADS, Competition is good fellas. Amd definitively turned the tables, for GOOD, the i3 processors stopped having 2/4 core/threads and actually became a more competitive option starting on the 8th gen.
i'd consider 32gb of RAM if load times are that big of an issue and textures aren't loading fast into vram. I'm pretty shure that CPU could work something in the order of 5 to 10% better if another 16gb of ram are thrown in the mix. Also, a GTX1080, or Rx 6650XT, or RTX3060 should be as far as anyone would wanna go with this CPU... if you have money for a better/faster GPU, spend less on CPU and more on a DDR4 used 6core 12thread 3rd gen Ryzen that WILL work better
That’s how I see things as well, the only reason I used the 3080 was because it was the only thing I had that was beefy enough to let the CPU stretch its legs 😅 I would’ve thrown 32 in as I had 4x8GB sticks, however the board used only had 2 slots so 16GB was the most I could throw in there, while I could’ve bought a 2x16 kit, that alone would’ve been more expensive than the CPU itself, so it wasn’t necessarily worth it.
It would be easier to put an SSD in than Windows 98
The dead end was when I put the SSD in, no boot, no output, no way to install macOS. The thing is just junk lol
the thumbnail is fire
This is a great CPU! I just build a budget system for a friend with a 1600x I got for $35 and a GTX 1060 3gb. Ryzen really was a game changer and these old processors hold up great today.
Trying to install any other OS on any Apple product is always a massive headache. I feel your pain brother
Yea it was a bit annoying, not only because of how locked down these things are, but the drive in this thing was the most pathetic thing I’ve ever used.
It’s even harder if you are trying to install Apple’s MacOS On Any Non Apple Product.
@@williammega6994 understandably so
Really? I have had no issues installing Mint on an iMac or Solus on a Mac Pro.
@@MrShalvayez I'm not sure what was up with this one, anytime I attempted to load a bootloader (whether the native one or a different one like OpenCore) the machine simply wouldn't boot to it. Either never got past a black screen or just went straight into macOS.
Another fantastic vid. Thank you for the little shout out to GHG! I've often thought of trying the same thing with my Athlon Silver 3050U HP laptop. Games like Doom Eternal that are very GPU bound could see some performance increase. However the machine right now is my daily driver PC so having to "dock" it with a GPU would annoy me. Now a poor-mans GPU dock like the Alienware Graphics Amplifier with some 3D printing and connectors to make it plug and play would be bad-ass.
True, the setup is cobbled together isn’t the most pretty, but if there was a better way I’d have done it. The space is so limited that the cable to plug the GPU in had to be a little bent to get it to fit as the antenna was directly behind it. Not to mention the thermals were horrendous because of not having the case closed to properly circulate it. I do have a razer core, and I’ve always been curious how much better a low end thunderbolt laptop would do with a GPU plugged in. Something to try in the future 🤷♂️
Absolutely fantastic video my brother. I'm subscribed and keen to see more.
So the newer device performs better?
correct! 👍
I’ve still got and daily use my mid-2018 i9. I’ve been wanting an M chip since the M1 was revealed but am very against replacing something perfectly ok unless it’s truly needed, and for me it wasn’t. But I was astonished by the M3 when I tried out an M3 at an Apple Store in December or so. I almost upgraded right then and there. But waited, then the M4 was put into the iPads for some reason. It’s without question I’m getting the M4 when it comes out. Period. I’ve been sparing with my money so that there’s no struggle. My i9 is constantly still getting warm when I’m simply running more than a couple tabs on Safari, and getting hot and battery drained when I’m running an actual program like Photoshop. I’m too excited to make that switch in 2 months and have an Apple Silicon on my desk.
I can say without a doubt the biggest improvement from the i9 to the M3 was the temperatures. I still to this day don't recall the fans ever having to kick into high gear like they did on the i9 when doing any task. The machine just isn't thermally efficient. You'll love swapping to the M4 when it comes out. I'm in the same boat as you, I'm not one to replace stuff either, (I'm still using a bent iPhone 12 with the screen shattered from dropping a weight on it haha) but the M3 simply was too good to pass up and when doing rendering and working with cinema camera footage, it's a beast.
Good videos my man!👍
Thank you!
Nice video. pacing is basically perfect. What a waste of silicon that mac is lmao
the ryzen 5 2600 should be better choice at around $5 different in aliexpress..these kind of cpu should be a good upgrade for budget gamer that still has i5 2nd,3rd and 4th gen
This brings back memories. My first computer was also a dell with a 750ti. But it had the classic i5 2500
Solid combo, this thing originally came with a 4600, however my novice pc builder brain got a 4770K and a board for 3rd gen a few months prior. Tossed the 4770K in the moment I got this machine and it carried me for years.

M3 would do you fine. It all comes down to what you use it for so mileage may vary.
The 2014 Mac Mini is so bad, I wouldn't even take it for free. And I love repurposing old garbage computers. It belongs in the recycling bin, sadly.
I'm sure for a more basic use machine, a Mac Mini like that would be fine... but the soldered 4GB RAM really kills it. and since upgraded models are pretty rare (relative to base), that just makes the value even worse. I bet my MacBookPro9,2 from 2012 I got for $50 with a 512GB SSD (and added 16GB RAM to) would hammer the 2014 mini in general usability.
