Melinda VanRy - Better With Art
United States

I'm Melinda. I make art. And I'm here to encourage you to reclaim your creativity and practice creative self-care.
I for the most part ignored my need to make art for YEARS, despite knowing what a good effect it had on my mental and emotional health. Choosing to make art-making a regular practice was transformative. Now I share what I've found, and continue to find.

Find Peace in the Process: Neurographic Lines & Color
Grab a Sharpie or something like it, and some color. Any type will work, but watercolor is ideal. This week we're revisiting when I started one of my favorite mind relaxers, neurographic lines. Before I knew they had a name.
Welcome to BETTER WITH ART. I'm Melinda and I'm here to encourage you to reclaim your creativity and practice creative self-care with weekly small-art prompts that can be done in an art journal or on paper if you don't have one.
If you'd like one that is ideal for my simple form of art journaling, the paper is important. It needs to be a heavy weight and preferably hot-press because although I love the texture of cold-press it's really hard on markers and pens. The one I use in all my videos and the art journaling groups at the library where I work is 140lb/300gsm. Sold in a three-pack, it also remains the best regular-price value that I've found:

This week I'm using a micron pen, a black Sharpie, and a silver Sharpie in three different versions of the same type of art.
SAKURA Pigma Micron Fineliner Pens

Various water-resistant and less expensive alternatives I've had success with and use now:
MARTCOLOR Micro-Pen Fineliner ink Pens

KOUSICA Micro Fineliner Drawing Art Pens
amzn.to/3A6fmhu
And we can change things up with sepia

As far as inexpensive watercolor pencils, I actually prefer the Crayola:

Watercolor blobs! I LOVE them! They're another one of those things that are surprisingly therapeutic to make. And transforming them into pumpkins? Well, that's more perfectly imperfect brain-pleasing fun. This week I'm also testing some inexpensive watercolor options for you, and jumping back into some arty inspiration from last year's 52-Week Art Journal Journey. Welcome to BETTER WITH ART. I'...

Thanks for sharing, very helpful 🤍🗝️🌀🦉✨♾️🤍
I love asemic writing. Especially on the translucence of tissue paper to float in a collage.
Very cool video capture
Thanks! I need to find more time for video editing apparently.
Love the depth in the colors. Also enjoyed your filming overlay. So cool.
Thanks! This was a fun one. And I was surprised by how much great color I could get with Crayola watercolors.
Clever filming
I have more time some times than others.
Toilet paper!
@@paxy2011 😆 Thanks for helping my chanel by wasting your time being a jerk.
It’s very relaxing.
I wasn't too sure about how this one was going at first, but, yes, very relaxing.
I have just started to collect tp and pt rolls, and here I am. And I do love circles. Maybe tea and coffee for a softer look. Thank you for this wonderful idea.
I was surprised by how well they worked, and by how well I liked the marks I can create with them! So enjoyable. Have fun!
I did my wonky pumpkins last night and agree...I felt by the time I was nearing the last few blobs, I had a better idea of how to do the lines. Love the suggestion about vines too! making squgles is always fun! Thanks as well for sharing the importance and relation between good mental health and being creative. I'm just starting my watercolor journey and am really loving it so far. I also agree, you have a soothing voice and I thoroughly enjoyed your video and have subscribed.
Welcome! And thank you. Art-making is a vital part of my mental health. Enjoy your watercolor journey! Watercolors can be so relaxing. With possibly seriously frustrating moments thrown in. Squiggles are definitely fun.
I can't get my hand to flow freely enough to do esimic writing. Maybe I'll try my opposite hand just for fun..... to see how that works. 🤔
Ooooh, sounds like a fun approach!
I like your art and that you teach us so much. But why do you speak like this. You. Talk. Like. This. Is it nervousness?
😆 No. When I use a voiceover in my video I don't talk like that. When I'm just talking while I'm arting, to whomever is listening, that's my brain relaxing into the art while also trying to focus on making sure I try to explain what I'm doing, and remember to talk, and... talk.
Pretty ❤
Thanks!
The cracked one looks like bark
Sometimes when things don't go as planned, like the extra wrinkles in the paper, something even better happens.
Love the blobby pumpkins.
Me, too!
Apparently these days you can throw crap on a wall and it's considered art
Or have fun making papers to be torn up for collage, but, hey, thanks for taking the time to be a jerk, though I bet you do that a lot online. Any comment helps me reach more people, so, yes, thanks.
Your videos are always accessible and fun, Melinda but I always learn something new about the process... or myself as well. Thanks for promoting me to keep going ❤
Thank you so much for that encouragement! Making the choice to take regular time for art-making changed my life. I'm glad my sharing what I've found in it encourages you to keep making it!
I purchased those pens from amazon. I really like them. Love your art.
I'm glad, and thank you!
COOL!
Thanks!
i did it it was so cool!!!
I remember making these in my 3D Art class in 9th grade. It’s always so fun to look at them.
It looks like more than it is. And I love how the repetitive line-making gives the brain a chance to shut down all the noise.
So fun 🎉
I love these! ❤
Give it a try! So much fun, and the repetitive motion allows the brain to get lost in it and quiet.
This is the coolest thing Ive ever seen!! So simple yet complex!
I love things like this. A simple process with a look that appears more than simple lines.
this is so cool!
It's a lot of fun. Give it a try!
This is so cool!!
Thanks! Give it a try!
Thats amazing 😊. Definitely gonna have to try that.
Have fun!
Darling!
Thanks! Give it a try!
Love your videos!!! I can’t wait to get started. Also what music is this in this video, obsessed
Wow!
I enjoyed making this new style, and am having fun wearing it! Will be making more for an upcoming craft show, and hope to get my online shop up soon!
I love your process You have the attitude that I try to share when I work with children You try, you play, you enjoy....perfection is not your goal You can’t be wrong when it is your personal expression I wish you could have known your mother-in-law Jo She would have been your biggest fan❤️
Thank you! Kids or adults, we all need to be able to give ourselves permission to just enjoy the process. I knew her a little when I was a child. Not well.
Nice! I loved the full video, too. ❤
Thank you!
Thank you!😊
Great video! ❤
You're welcome 😊
Thank you! It's always fun to find new ways to make things, and even more fun when they're inexpensive!
Oh I love thissss😊
Thank you! Give it a try!
Beautiful in so many ways
Thank you! Who knew a simple plastic knife could create such lovely trees?!?
This has been so great! Ty
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Love the ghost you were able to get with the purple on the silicone mat. If you had used some mat medium to pull that ghost, it would have been awesome. But your'e not using open acrylics, so getting a clean ghost is much more difficult, thus the not so great second pull. It would have been well worth using mat medium and giving it a few minutes to make that second pull.
I now typically use gloss medium for a second or ghost pull. I also love how it can create interesting often gorgeously grungy prints with paint left on the plate if I've been too heavy-handed. Thanks for taking the time to share tips.
Beautiful ❤
Thank you ☺
I do this! I didn’t know it had a name. I like colouring in with dots instead of full colour.
Ooh, dots are a great idea! Thanks for sharing.
I like to create. I show my family members, and you can tell when they don’t really care for what I made. And it’s okay. We all have different likes, dislikes and different tastes. And thank goodness we do. But I still make my crazy things and once in a while, it’s a hit! Yay! ❤️💜💚
Can you imagine how dull life would be if we all had to like and make the same things?!? It is gratifying when something hits and someone appreciates something we loved creating, isn't it? But, yeah, loving the making is awesome. I'm glad you keep making your crazy things. Have fun!
Melinda I just found you on you tube and I am so excited to follow and try all of the beautiful Art you are sharing. Thank you from Canada ……Lise
Welcome! And thank you! I always love hearing someone is enjoying what I'm sharing, and, even better, wanting to make art, too.
There’s something really beautiful about how you applied the Gelli printed papers. So meditative and serene. Love it. 😍
Thank you! The original piece was such a pleasurable departure and learning experience. And opened up a new area to explore.
I was born in the 80s, before social media is what it is today. I feel sad for the younger generations. They're seeing people succeed so much from just being "liked" on a video. That has to feel like, if you're not getting the "likes" you failed. Even though like you said, art is subjective, and you'll NEVER please everyone. It does remind me of when myspace and facebook started the more friends you had meant the cooler you were. It's just got to be terribly hard to be able to give yourself fulfillment on your own vs looking for it through likes or clicks or whatever the term is. Sorry for the venting comment 😅
I was born in the 70s and I get it. Comparison has always been hard, but now there's no way to escape it without intention, with social media and its often fake representations of what a person or a life "should" be. And intentionally stepping away is hard because it comes with the added anxiety of not being able to see what's happening. I certainly wouldn't want to have to be the anxious awkward kid I was then, now.
Hi, just now discovered your channel, and have been enjoying many videos. Thank you for speaking about art as self- care. I suffer from ptsd, and my art play and exploration gives me a little oasis in my life.
Welcome! I'm sorry you have gone through what you've gone through. I'm glad you've found an oasis in art-making. It's vital in my mental-health-care routine so I need to share what I've found with others. Thank you for taking the time to comment, and for the opportunity to encourage you in your art play and exploration. Feedback like this also encourages me to keep showing up.
Gorgeous. I want to try it!
@@jcramatte Pricey, but I had a specific use for it so made the investment.
Loved the screeching tires! Nice save!
@@jcramatte That was a fun edit. 😃 And I love that acrylic mediums can be used like that.
La Golden meilleure peinture que je connais, 🎉❤❤
I just went and refilled my meds...thank you for normalizing the necessity to recalibrate our brains' chemistry. And also the need to do something that hones our attention, and for me, it is art and gardening! I adore fall, for its beautiful colors, and my birthday 🎉. Hehe. But I absolutely agree on the depressing (and long, up north where I live) winter. I am going to redouble my efforts at self-care during the Long Dark this year.
Medication and art art two important parts of my being as mentally healthy as possible. I can acknowledge the beauty of some aspects of fall, but it gets too easily overwhelmed by my sometimes panic-level dread as the daylight ends earlier and earlier. Yes, winter can seem interminable. Snow has already fallen on a mountain in my state, but only there and only one. We are in a lovely summery interlude down here at Lake Ontario level. I hope you stick around for encouragement to be practicing creative self-care as part of your winter survival self-care. I'm so glad you enjoy the beauty of fall. And I hope you have a wonderful lovely birthday!
Wow! What a save!
Definitely a trick I was glad to find!
I'm glad you made a video of this as so many people don't know this. Is there any reason you prefer gloss medium to matte?
Gloss medium tends to give me the more translucent look when I'm going for it. And this piece in particular is a glossy piece. I'm late getting Part 2 of the process up this week, but it's inspired by the color and texture of the side of a salmon.
@@melindavanry Ok thanks. Looking forward to part 2 :)
Winter is my least favorite season too .
Too long. Too little sunlight.
Thank you for sharing it's a new word that's come into my awareness lately so thank you for showing what it does. I picked up a tube of it and wasn't sure how to proceed so thank you
There are different ways to apply and use it, but it does work best over a dark color, so the reflection and refraction interference with the light is more visible. This is blue, purchased specifically for this project.
