Russian Salad Recipe | Homemade Russian Salad | Delicious Russian Salad | Russian Salad Step by Step
Russian Salad, also known as Olivier Salad, is a classic appetizer; quite popular and common at any special occasion or parties these days. The perfect combination of mixed vegetables, potato and mayonnaise creates a symphony of flavours and textures that simply wins the taste buds of people worldwide.
But do you know how did this iconic dish come to be and why is it called the Russian Salad?
Well, the history of Russian salad traces back to the 19th century when it was created by Lucien Olivier, a Belgian chef, at the renowned Hermitage restaurant in Moscow, Russia. The salad quickly gained popularity among Moscow’s elite, becoming a symbol of haute cuisine in the Russian capital. But since Olivier prepared the dish himself in his kitchen, the original recipe was a closely guarded secret. It was one of his assistants, Ivan Ivanov, who took the advantage of Olivier’s absence and assumed the secret formula of this signature dish by looking at the preparation table. Then after quitting his job at the Hermitage restaurant, Ivanov went with his recipe to another restaurant, the Moskva where he introduced a suspiciously similar salad - an imitation of the original salad.
It is said that the original Olivier recipe could have up to 100 ingredients including lobster, cavier, pheasant and other exclusive kinds of meat along with eggs, pickles, potatoes among all other ingredients. However what we consume today as Russian Salad is not the original recipe as Olivier took the secrets with him to the grave.
Throughout the centuries, different regions of the world have created their own versions of this salad, but a few basic ingredients have remained the same: potatoes, carrots, peas, and mayonnaise - sometimes eggs and pickles as well.
In this video, we have recreated this classic Russian Salad in a quick, simple, yet tasty way to impress your guests. Let’s have a quick overview of the recipe:
Ingredients:
1. Potato - 1 pc
2. Carrots - 1 pc
3. Beans - 150 gms
4. Green Peas - 1 cup
5. Corn - 1 cup
6. Apple - 1 pc
7. Salt to taste
8. Black pepper Powder - 1 tsp
9. Mayonnaise - 2 tbsp
10. Fresh Cream - 1 cup
11. Latus - For Decoration
Cooking Method:
1. Start by dicing the vegetables into small cubes.
2. Then boil the Potatoes and Carrots in a saucepan until they are tender but not mushy.
3. Then add the Green Peas, Beans and Corn into the same boiling water and let them cook for 2 - 3 minutes until their raw flavour goes away.
4. Now in a large mixing bowl, combine all the boiled and diced vegetables - Potatoes, Carrots, Green Peas, Beans, Corn, and Apple.
5. Add the Mayonnaise and Fresh Cream along with some Salt and Black Pepper Powder to enhance the flavour.
6. Then start mixing all the ingredients gently avoiding mashing them.
7. Cover the Salad bowl with a wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving. Chilling allows the flavours to meld together creating a harmonious taste.
Russian Salad is not just a salad - it’s an experience with its rich history and diverse ingredients. Whether you serve it as a side dish or enjoy it on its own, this salad is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Where i can buy seed popy?
Poppy seeds are available at any Indian grocery stores.. you can get it easily..
Will try n comment
Please do
Is soaking overnight is mandatory or soaking them 1 hr or boiling it is better ?
For best results, soaking overnight is ideal.. but in case of a short time, you can soak for an hour or two..
No decarb required?
It is truly incredible how they make such a potent drink from what looks like, to a westerner, scrap. Har Har mahadev. Rajasthani bhang is top notch ❤

Looks good, but it's too much time-consuming
Hey, here's some honest feedback. I came back to your video a week after watching it for the first time. Trust me, I'm a newbie in cooking. This was my first time trying this particular recipe, and I absolutely loved it. Thank you for this amazing recipe! Best wishes.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. We are delighted to know our video helped you to this extent.. ❤️
😊😊😊
please change the audio - jarring...
too much salt and oil
Do I need to decarboxilate first?
No Decarb needed
I want to make it so bad, looks amazing! Any idea how many grams of mango you’re supposed to use? 😊
That much salt? Can't take that since I have high BP. I'll watch other videos for roasted cashew.
Please let me know what should be the shelf life of it if kept in air tight packaging
Why not metal container?
How many glasses of bhang will be in these ingredients
Is it ok if I don't add ghee?
Yes, absolutely fine but you need to roast it in salt
@@TheBengalsKitchen thank you
Are the leaves dried in sunlight? And will fresh bhang make me high
Yes ofcourse..
@@TheBengalsKitchen why I'm not getting high with fresh leaves?
Few decades ago a hotel keeper in Pushkar, Rajasthan, asked if I want to try his bhang lassi. He counted different choises with his fingers: plain, mild, normal, strong, extra-strong, and King-Strong. He had six fingers in his left hand. I was thinking that I was hallusinating. I chose normal. After he showed way to mountain temple, and told to bring some ghee to sage. The sage made some sort of bread with the ghee. And teached something about wisdom of Shiva and yoga, that has become one of my guiding lights through my journey to find balance between spiritual health and economical wealth. Since then I’ve been thinkin, that one day I’ll learn to make bhang lassi. I’ve been trying to find information of how to make them green bhang balls from ganja plants.
These are the leaves of the plant, which is legal in India, in Bengali we call it Sidhhi, mostly we prepare this in Shivratri and Bijaya Dasami(Last day of Durga puja). Hope one day you'll try to make this 😃. Just FYI, If you soak the leaves for a day and add more soaked poppy seeds, it'll turn into KING STRONG.. But please dont put Supari or any other ingredients in it, then it might harm you.
Ok, I had to write this. I am no cook.. I'm the kind of person who will not take the trouble of making tea even and I kept looking at your recipe and thinking just how easy it is supposed to be. So today, I took the courage and I got into it and it didn't even take that long and my god was it good. The steak (even without the sauce) was not at all dry and it was the tastiest thing I've ever made. So thank you for this. Khubi shundor ekta shondhe katlo☺️
Thank you.. It means a lot to us, please share AMAP😃
god bless your husband
