Improve Your Ski and Row in HYROX (Jane Erbacher from Erg Army)
In this week’s episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast I’m excited to bring you my conversation with Jane Erbacher from Erg Army (@ergarmy). Jane - who runs Erg Army - is an all round awesome person, and a guru at teaching the rowing and Ski ergs. She has run hundreds of workshops all around the world helping to educate people on how to properly use the machines, and has helped to coach some of the world’s top athletes including Tia Clair Toomey, James Newbury, and Joanna Wietrzyk. Jane has been on the podcast before, over 18 months ago, and that was one of our most popular ever episodes and this one doesn’t disappoint. We talk all about her HYROX experiences since then, what she’s learnt and changed her mind on regarding the ergs in HYROX, we get into the technique and pacing on the machines, and lots more. It's always a pleasure chatting to Jane - full of laughs, energy, and tonnes of tips - and I think you’ll really enjoy listening.

Thank you for doing these! Have been following for a while. So fascinating how every guest approaches training differently.
Thanks for watching!
Hyrox is attracting some really inspiring people, good luck in the races coming up
Thank you!
What a great interview, amazing achievements and keep up the great work! Well done Oli and Mark :)
Thank you, appreciate it!
Great info and thanks for sharing. Just would like to know about the penalties that are involved with participating in Hyrox. thanks and cheers
Thanks for watching! There are many ways its possible to get a penalty - easiest thing would be to have a read through the rulebook here hyrox.com/rulebook

What a great resource for any athletes that are on the journey with Myocarditis. Thanks to you both!
Thank you!
Great interview! Love Tia, what an inspiration, and so exciting to see a legend in Crossfit crosspollinate another sport. This is gonna be massive for women's hyrox
Chris is one of the best IMO
Respect to this coach for his honesty and views 👏 Great interview 👍
Always great to listen to older athletes and coaches. Wilhelm is both and has a healthy matter-of-fact perspective. Thanks for the great Listen Greg!
Another great interview Greg. Wilhelm set a “World Best” for male 60-64 in his first event, something for the rest of us oldies to aim for. Hoping my first event might be Olympia in May if it’s on or any other UK event this side of the summer recess.
Rox, do you have Hyrox training plans for men/women over 60?
Our coaching plans (which are completely personalised), and our 12 week training plans, are suitable for all ages. More info here roxlyfe.com/coaching/ and here roxlyfe.com/12-week-training-plan/
Peter is an inspiration! I'm 61 and just finished my first DEKA MILE and I'm now looking forward to a HYROX PFT in February... whilst hoping HYROX will come to the Pacific Northwest (I'm in Vancouver, BC) soon!
Hey mate, silly question, in this zone included in the 1k run or is it 1k + roxzone?
It's 1km plus roxzone. A slightly more involved answer to that is every event, in theory, is 8.7km total (run + roxzone distance). Some events will have bigger roxzones than others. But the runs will be adjusted accordingly so that in total it comes to 8.7km.
@@roxlyfe right. So, let’s say I did a Hyrox pro in my facility in 1:22 and I arranged the stations to be close to each other, looking at the roxzone avg time being about 6min, should I consider my time around 1:28? Disappointing 🤦🏻
@@pat_racco Id say typically a roxzone is more on average 5mins, but yes thats about right (Im not agreeing on the "disappointing" part!). Replicating a HYROX is so hard in the gym, but personally when I do it, I run 1.1km per run, and have all the equipment for the stations very nearby.
@@roxlyfe very helpful, thanks mate and Marry Xmas

Great info! I'm training now for my first Hyrox in March next year!
My inspiration ❤
Please do it!!!!❤❤❤
Can’t wait to see Tia, James, Maddie and Jay compete! Always love watching top athletes in new disciplines 💪🏽🙌🏼
Doing a hyrox event would be an active recovery day for Tia
I’m going to this I live in Melbourne so super excited! Jay crouch and Maddie Sturt are also competing 🥰 taking my 5yo daughter who does CrossFit and gymnastics and competes in running events and swims and bikes so she’s so excited to go see Tia in person with me and hopefully get some autographs on our matching CrossFit tops 😂❤️
Awesome!! Hope you both have a great time!!
Man if she get's her run game built up, she could be a possible threat later on.
Love this! Well done Greg
Thank you!
I reckon you could get a new WR!! I’d bet a fiver on it.
We’re beyond excited!
🙌🙌
Great work Greggo. Big coup getting this interviews - massive news for HYROX 👏🏻
Thank you!!
Is Tia doing doubles with James Kelly?!
Listen to the podcast! Literally answers that in the first 3 minutes!!
I wonder if they know each other. (JK not Newbury)
Love Tia!! Can’t wait to see how she gets on with Hyrox 😊
She's such a legend! So exciting to see how she does!
Thanks for sharing. I’m starting to get the itch to do one. How much do the sleds weigh?
All the weights, by gender and division are in this post roxlyfe.com/a-beginners-guide-to-hyrox/
inspirational, struggled with certain stations at beginning and kept going, legend
Really interesting comments on the compromised run training. Back to the old adage that no-one really knows the best or “right” way to train for HYROX. I will be giving that a try for sure 👍 Thanks for the video
Team up with Hunter, you will smash the doubles
How tall is he? The shorter he is the more time the wall ball has to accelerate before it gets to him which might knock more wind out of him with each catch.
How fast is he?
30 min 10km, 14 min 5km, best Hyrox pro time is around 1:01
@@mattynagle5709pre super shoes too
HYROX Run Total is typically 26.xx
I just started to get interested in this sport over the last few days. I investigate everything and watch tons of TH-cam. I’m really excited and am going to a local specialist gym for a trial then hope to enter a race in March/April in Europe, if there are any spaces left! Good to hear Peter’s story
Hey, great that youve found us, and the sport! Really hope our content can be a huge help (check out our website articles, as well as our podcast and Insta channel!)
Inspiring bloke! Thanks for sharing.
Great stuff. All the energy, enthusiasm and comicalness of youth :)
That's brilliant overview thank you
Nice one Royal
Great suggestion about visualising the course / arena. Will be incorporating that into my plan 👍👍
Well done, Greg. Very entertaining chat with Clare.
Rylan, you are an inspiration no matter how fast you go! It was great seeing you back out there competing. I’m sure you’ve received more ‘medical’ advice than you ever wanted, but the number of OCR athletes I know who have become sick from parasites they picked up in mud pits is astounding. Maybe worth checking?
Thank you for doing these Greg. And for your contribution to the broadcast. And for checking everyone had their chip timers on last Friday in Birmingham. And, and, and. You are a true ambassador for this sport. Thank you. 👊
ha thank you! Definitely managed to save a few people at the last minute who'd forgotten their chips!
I was deployed to the UAE back in 2014. The issues that started when you were out there could be the result of being exposed to Burn pit toxins. I had to file that in my VA claims because ever since then, I've had the feeling of having to clear my throat all the time. Could possibly be something like chronic bronchitis, never got an official test yet. Might be something to look into if you haven't already. I really hope that you can narrow down what the issue is because once that happens, you're going to be a serious threat out there.
Good job asking about his mile workout splits 👍🏼😁
ha ha I know what the people want to know!
Rylan’s such an intense dude! What an athlete, when he’s healthy! I remember seeing him in some Spartan videos, and the guy is such a beast. I’m glad he managed to get back to Amsterdam with a good performance, I think the sport would be less without his performances. Totally get what he said about the doctors misunderstanding his condition too! I was diagnosed with asthma aged 31, but the doctors took so long to accept that I needed a referral to a specialist - same kind of thing, my lung capacity is enough that I blow above the level for a healthy 2.00m tall 21 year old (at 1.80m, then 31, and with a 25% bronchoconstriction). The public health systems are not geared for athletic types…
