You’re the first I’ve seen who holds both yarns the exact same way as me! It is so silly but it feels natural at this point 😂
Thanks so much for all of your videos on knitting and crocheting tips and lessons on how to! Your instructions on the MCAL 2024 were infallible! It was such a relief to know I could turn to you for help! Not sure I would have been able to finish without you. Thanks again. 😊
@@mariking9313 You are so welcome! I’m really glad the videos were helpful for you.
Jennifer - are you doing tutorials for Clues 10, 11, and 12?
I have the footage done for Clue 10, and for Clues 11-12 of the shrug version, just need to edit it all and get it uploaded. I haven’t gotten any footage shot for Clues 11-12 for the blanket version yet, but can make a video for those if anyone needs it. My goal is to get the Clue 10 and Shrug video out within the next week or so, but life keeps intervening in frustrating ways.
The measuerment of the blanket and shawl are different from the Symmetrical Blanket and shawl and I was wondering if the cast on count could be different between them too.
No - the blanket/symmetrical blanket and shawl/symmetrical shawl each have the same cast on number (the pattern is currently still free, so you can grab that if you don’t already have it). The dimensions are different due mostly to the length, as the symmetrical versions have different numbers of rows worked for many of the sections than the non-symmetrical versions.
@writermomo4 thank you. I do have your pattern. I was just confused about how the symmetrical blanket and shawl have different measures than the blanket and shawl.
What size of knitting needles would you recommend for the I-core if you get gaugde with 5mm knitting needles?
The wonderful tutorial that I have been using stops at Clue 10 and says (coming soon). And there is no tutorial for Clues 11 and 12. Am I missing something?
Where would I have to measure to see if i got gauge for clues 8 and 9 because I am new to cables and mosaic work.
For Clue 8, I would suggest that you measure for the number of stitches in 4” across Row 3 after working through Row 6, and measure the number of rows in 4” near the edge (in the regular double crochet section) rather than in the cables section once you’ve worked at least 12 rows. While the cables can pull the height down a *little* bit, it should easily stretch back to the same height as the non-cabled sections. You just want to be sure to work the front and back post stitches at the very top of the previous row’s post (as I mention around 21:45 in this video, if you work a post stitch into a lower part of the previous row’s post, it will reduce the height of your cable section). For Clue 9, you can measure the number of stitches across 4” on Row 2 in-between the two colored motifs after completing Row 3, and measure the number of Rows in 4” in the space between the two colored motifs after completing Row 25. I hope that helps!
Thank you sooooo much for your help. I was going out of my mind on where and how to get the measurements right.
If you use 3 different hook sizes for all 9 squares, what hook size would you recommend for section 10?
I am so grateful for each of your incredible tutorials as I've attempted my first crochet-along. Thank you so much! If I had not had your tutorials to follow, I would never had made it to Clue 9. I am eternally grateful!! Following the clues (pattern) as I go thru each tutorial with you has clarified a lot of the mystery (for me) of reading a pattern. I am watching this clue first before I attempt it. I will be using one color, do I carry it thru each row?
If you’re just using one color throughout the entire clue, no need to carry anything. Simply crochet each stitch as written when you get to it and don’t worry about any of the “carrying” as that is only for the multiple colors.
@@writermomo4 Thank you for your prompt response! I am sorry, but of course I have follow up questions...do I leave the CC attached? I'm doing row 2 - attached my CC (I will only have one) to MC, left my CC attached and went to do my second CC in same row and I'm not sure what to do with CC since it's attached still. Do I just make sure it's stretchy enough for the entire row so that when I block it it will be able to be stretched to 14.5"? And then will each row have a strand of my CC?
Oh my goodness this is an amazing tutorial video. I’ve just completed clue 9 of the MCAL with your video Jennifer and it is superb!!! Thank you so much.
You’re welcome! 😊
Thankyou so much ❤
Good evening Thank you for the useful explanation I need if you can help me to make a knitted dress for my 5-year-old granddaughter using Fair Isle But I can't read the pattern and I'm not interested because I won't do this job professionally it's just a hobby Because I will start from the top and when I make a sweater or jacket or dress for my granddaughters I start from the top and divide using the men's method but I need to know how to work incrementally in this method and I am restricted to a specific pattern and a number that depends on the pattern So is it possible for you to help me? I will be grateful and thankful to you Fatma
Thank you for this video. It really helped me to figure out how to carry the floats on the back.
You’re welcome! I’m really glad it was helpful.
Jennifer is the first 3 chains count as 1FDC? Thanks
No. The initial chain you use to begin the FDC does not count. If you go back to the description of the FDC in Clue 1, each FDC consists of 1 base + 1 DC. So after you chain 3, you “yo and pull up lp, yo and pull through 1 lp {base ch made}, yo and pull through 2 lps, yo and pull through 2 lps {DC made}”. The initial chain 3 will anchor the side of the first row, but you won’t work into it and it does not count as a stitch. Hope that helps!
@@writermomo4 thank you very much. Yes it does help.
Brilliant teaching Jennifer. My first time doing cable crochet and I wouldn’t have done it without your video tutorial. ❤fantastic video.

Many, many thanks Jennifer for showing us this square. I would never have gotten row 6 right if it weren’t for you and your great instructional videos! I always try and work the pattern out for myself first but after ripping out rows 4-5-and 6 five times I knew I needed your help! Bless you!
It’s truly my pleasure! I’m glad the video was helpful for you and really appreciate your kind words. 😊

Thank you so much. I bought everything and kept it in the closet because I did not understand all parts of the pattern (why are there ** in front of the 5 dc or anywhere she uses **? I am used to a single * denoting here to here but not what the ** is) and the official video did not go through any of the pattern rows. I found you and am finally starting to you do such a good job!
You’re welcome! Is it clear now how the * and ** function in the instructions? I’d be happy to walk through it in more detail, if it isn’t. Just let me know!
Thanks so much for taking the time to explain and show how each square is done. It’s truly appreciated. 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻😊
You’re welcome!
Thank you! Your videos have been so helpful! I started before you released this and it would not block to size. Can you recap comments you made regarding blocking? I think I’m too tight, but using a 6mm hook.
I was positive there was no way to block my finished square to the correct size, but it actually did. (I describe what I did in detail here: www.ravelry.com/discuss/expression-fiber-arts/4292005/4601-4625#4603 ) If that doesn’t work, then you’ll want to do the following as you’re carrying each color: when switching to a new color, always 1) tug on the color you’ve been carrying to be sure it isn’t gapping out anywhere, then stretch your entire project width-wise to make sure the length of the carried yarn you’re about pick up has plenty of length across the carried portion that it won’t restrict blocking. Likewise, when you bring the color up that’s been carried across the WS, do not tug it or tighten it down to make the first stitch, or with will restrict the blocking height-wise. I really did find that wetting the block sufficiently was enough to be able to block the square that, when dry, seemed impossible to get anywhere close to the right size. While I wouldn’t leave it to soak (as that would risk the darker colors bleeding), I did use a spray bottle filled with water and a few drops of wool wash to THOROUGHLY saturate it, then left it to sit for about 10 minutes before blocking and it did stretch to the correct size with just a bit of effort.
This tutorial is so helpful. It makes me want to start all over again.
I am so sorry I wasn’t able to get this video released the same day the clue came out! My editing program was constantly crashing on me and made the editing take so much longer than it should have.
Oh my goodness, THANK YOU! I’m so glad I waited for this video. Did not even occur to me to carry colors along as you did much less the method for doing so. I know these videos take a lot of your time, planning and effort. Please know they are so appreciated. I learned so much.

At 41:46, you are working the beginning of Row 5 after switching to the dark color. You say the first stitch is a p1, but that’s not written in the swatch instructions in the EFA MKAL. Those say: sm [and switch color], sl1wyib, *k1,… If I add the p1 there, will it mess up my count?
The swatch instructions are slightly different from the main project instructions (the video demonstrates the main project instructions). The main project version has an additional stitch at either end - just inside the edge markers - which is always purled on the RS and always knit on the WS. If you’re working the swatch while following the tutorial, just follow the written instructions and ignore the first stitch I work after the edge marker at the beginning, and the last stitch I work before the edge marker at the end.
You rock!!!! Love your tutorials. Make such a difference for me.

Thank you so much for doing this! I'm still relatively new to knitting (skill-wise) and have a tendency to take on things a little more challenging than I should. And reading knitting patterns is still confusing to me sometimes. This really makes the pattern more understandable. I can't wait to continue my challenge!
Thank you for your videos! They are so helpful. What size hook are you using?
You’re welcome! I’m so glad they’re helpful for you. I ended up using a US6/G (4.0mm) hook to get gauge for this square.
I am kinda new to crocheting and am confused by the back post double and triple crochet when starting row 4. Can you show how you would start the row 4 using original stitch?
On row 9, you change hooks, what size do you change to? There is nothing in the instructions that show a size change.
Hi Tracey. I actually address this specifically in the Row 9 Introduction (which begins at 22:00 in the video). Yes, you are correct that there is no mention of changing hook size in the pattern. My suggestion for doing so was just a personal recommendation, and was offered specifically because I found that working the single crochet rows with the same hook size prevented those sections from blocking as wide as the other parts of the block. I just went up one hook size - I was using a G hook (US6 / 4mm) and went up to a US7 / 4.5mm - for the single crochet rows. I hope that helps!
@@writermomo4 Thank you so much! My apologies for missing the introduction, I guess that's what I get for skipping ahead. :-) Your videos are so helpful on this project, thank you again.
Thank you. That was very helpful.
