The online debates between Gretzky and Lemieux will continue back and forth forever but in reality the legacy of Wayne Gretzky has already been solidified in stone overall through analysts, media, magazines worldwide and is regarded as the greatest player ever. Because of this bestowment, when I travel, wherever I go most of the world knows or has heard of Wayne Gretzky, however after Lemieux’s great career, few people outside the hockey realm or Pittsburgh knows him. There was a story recently that security wouldn’t even let Mario Lemieux into a HOCKEY benefit show in the U.S. because nobody recognized him, and Gretzky had to vouch for him to let him through. Stories like this show Mario’s limited influence on mainstream culture and his dominance was never enough to transcend Gretzky and hence to be better known. No matter how much the Lemieux fans try to dress up his “what if” career, the Gretzky legacy is absolute and chosen to be the best ever in the world, the recognition has already been bestowed upon him, case closed!!

Gary Suter and Brian Trottier both hammered Gretz into the boards questionably dirty hits, they both had a long career and I don’t believe there was any bounty on their head! Through my minor hockey career, I was alway strong on my skates and solid in the hitting department mostly dishing out not so much received anything significant , then I stepped up into junior at 17, first couple games a got blasted twice by 19 year olds…..best learning experience a player can have, to be humbled.

He was far from a physical player -exactly, that’s why a lot of people (including Gretzky himself) will tell you the best players to ever play the game were Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe. They could hit, defend and win scoring titles, the fact that Bobby Orr did it as a defenseman is why I call him the best ever.

The title of that was misleading. "Who Gretzsky feared the most" The vid stated who he felt was the best goalie, which could be different than who he feared the most.

Gretsky is said to be the best because of the men who supported and protected him, Semenko , Messier, Kuri , Anderson, Furre to name a few. The Real king is Ovechkin.

I never bought in to the whole Gretzky thing. Imagine giving Orr or Mario a free pass to skate around. It's good there are no more "enforcers" in the league because everyone has to be able to play hockey.

I don't think Gretzky was the great one, he wasn't a complete player and received special treatment.

I played against Gretsky in the HUB league in 71 72. He could be stopped. Orr was the greatest. Gretskys body guards were scary pieces of nasty. That's why he broke records. Orr and Howe didn't have body guards on the ice.

This guy scored 1 goal in 12 NHL games. There's a reason he was a career minor leaguer, and it wasn't this hit. He was already on his way out.
