Tips on Getting a Wheelchair Ramp for Your Home
Holidays are there just in order to have some routine disruption in your life, which can be beneficial for healthy people (they call this change in routine "rest"), but can be upsetting and even harmful for some sick or disabled people. But also not all the disabled people's (even wheelchair user's) experiences are the same. I see that paraplegics are very active, they use manual wheelchairs and play their sports using manual wheelchairs. Also for me the holidays are not this bad, even though that i use electric wheelchair as pushing manual wheelchair is too hard for me. When there are holidays, we have day off work, so, we don't go to work and we can have visits, etc instead of job. And for me, there is some tolerance if something unannounced happens and i can't do all the routine.

I know. I am still learning.
Some friends told me about a service, I thought they said TSA Cares but maybe not. What they described didn't sound like what you described though. They said I would have to fill out an application, pay $75 with the application and set up an appointment for an interview. It would allow me to bypass normal TSA check-in process. At this time, I am not physically, mentally or emotionally healthy enough for travel. I told them thank you for the information.
That is NOT TSA Cares. I have no idea what program they were talking about. TSA Cares just helps you through security, free of charge.

I recently found your channel, as my mobility issues (US disabled Veteran in OH) had finally gotten to the point where I'm spending more time in a wheelchair rather than using my rollator. Since this began (for me) roughly 16 years ago, I've encountered a number of accessibility issues. Some have included churches, which I've discovered are exempt due to ADA laws because of the separation of state and church. To date, I've mainly been posting about these on Facebook; although some are serious enough a complaint maybe should be filed through the ADA itself. That route (Facebook) seems to be the only option for churches in an attempt to "shame" them into correcting things. Then again, I've had some jerks attack me there for calling some place out as (they say) people like me have no business being out in public on my own or without a "caretaker." At any rate, any suggestions on tactics I should take in so far as reporting? Thanks!
Well...you said it, they are not covered by the ADA. I don't go there. But I work with my own church. I proudly have to say they have found or built some funds to refurbish the church and add in all the accessible pieces needed. We are just waiting for a change of Bishops and then we will submit the request for the changes in the church. I find that more successful, to work WITH them than against them. I think in their hearts, they recognize the need, there are just no funds. However anything is possible, raising funds is one of them. P.S: Glad you found us. Liza
@@Worldwheelchairwarriors Your right in that I'd much rather work WITH some one or place (regardless of type) rather than go the route of an ADA complaint/suit/etc. My oldest daughter is multiply handicapped (now 42 living in group home), so my experience has always been that involving "authority" in anything tends to create more resistance. Then again, there are those situations where you don't seem to have much choice. For so many years, I "loved" (heavy sarcastic tone) being asked, if I'd known the condition of my daughter prior to her birth, would I have had her?!? Yeah, right, like her birth/life have no value!
Again, the ADA will not solve or get them to comply, but the goodness and kindness they should practice with humanity. THAT should be their main focus. Raise funds silly people and do what is your responsibility, to accept and invite ALL. My tactic is to usually win them over, get them on my side and help them raise or find funds that will change the building for good. (Not a short process, I know). P.S: How did you find my channel, if you don't mind asking?
👍
Lots of good advice for me and my husband. He has a power chair that I've had to push...ow. He's much more careful about charging it now. Happy Thanksgiving and God bless.
Let's grow the channel for the holidays!
Very informative, recently got a a wheelchair with inflatable wheels, i have punctured them twice because after using solids forever i often forget to mind where i go, i am definitely getting solid ones next week because i never wanna stress about a puncture.
Solid tires are definitely the way to go. I hope your tire situation gets better soon. Liza

@@Worldwheelchairwarriors Well, I have sent.
Wheelchair frames are not structurally strong enough to not collapse in on the person in a crash. The airline seats are better. Maybe with new designs, structurally sound this can be an option
That will be the next step. They are testing all of that. I don't think I would offer to be a crash dummy though.
My flight on southwest from destin to Nashville had a seat that it looked like they were testing for this very thing. 737 max 8 plane
That happened in Tuscon, Az. at a Wal-Mart. Very sad. They tried to say he had a knife, but one was not shown in the videos, of which there were 4, from different angles. No toolbox, either.
Crazy, unhinged cops is all I saw.
@@Worldwheelchairwarriors Exactly. And they will keep on doing this kind of stuff as long as they can get away with it.
Good to see you Larry
When I flew this past May my experience with the cross country portion of Delta wasn’t bad, but the “puddle jumpers“and I don’t know maybe half to 3/4 of the airport workers were just terrible. They definitely need to do better. I’m glad they’re getting on this this is good news
Good morning 😊. Thanks for posting so much good information. God bless and don't forget to tell God that you love him.
You are so welcome. I will be sure to do that. :)
Because so many citizens have been falsely arrested and targeted by police investigations, Supreme Court Justices have recommended that citizens do NOT talk with police.
Do you have the article statement from the Supreme Court on that?
I did do my research. The Supreme Court Never stated what Greg claims in his above statement. I want to caution everyone to look things up and not jump to incorrect or misleading statements. I encourage everyone to LOOK UP THE LAW & AND WHAT IS SAYS. People can say anything they want on the internet these days. So be careful. I will post a follow up to this video for Monday so that it is clear. Then i will post the needed links in the discription box. Thank you. Liza
Congratulations on 3 years 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks Tina. :)
Thank you for the video! I chose a power wheelchair instead of a scooter because of the things that you mentioned. The turning radius (especially inside the home) and taking it out to smaller spaces. It is also easier for my arms and hands to operate. I am very excited as it gets deliver today 🎉.
Great! I am excited for you! I hope you enjoy it!
I will be going to an electric wheelchair in November any tips?
Yes. Just go slow at the beginning. Find a great place to charge it every night. Do you have a ramp already at home? You might need that too. Enjoy.
@@Worldwheelchairwarriors I live in government housing. The entire house is wheelchair accessible for my husband who had a severe stroke in 19. I'm blessed.
Did your chair arrive? How did it go? What color did you choose? Did you get any quick training?
@@Worldwheelchairwarriors I've used them before so just need a little practice with the different controls. It's going to be plain black so I can add whatever color I'm in the mood for. Lol. I'm getting it in about 2 weeks. Then I'll be free to go and do as I need to.
I live in HUD housing, specifically built as a senior and disabled community in 60s and still used for that purpose today. It is definitely not ADA compliant. There are many areas of the apartment that are better than any place that I have ever lived but there are also major things missing grab bars in the bathroom for instance, they only fix burnt out lights twice a month even though the one and only light in the bathroom is burnt out like I have to leave the door open so I have to tell my kids like go pee before you come and visit me but unless you wanna leave the door open and pee while you’re here🤷♀️, and I certainly can’t shower like that! Using a cane and a walker I can use my oven but if I was in a wheelchair in the oven and maybe even stove top would be completely unusable the way the galley is set up. Don’t get me wrong I am grateful for a roof over my head that I can afford and that is generally safe, In no way could they claim to be ADA compliant.
Keep on bugging them to get things fixed. Go up the chain with a report and see if they get the message. don't give up. Liza
Absolutely not! My mother was not in a wheelchair user but she used a walker and it was not ADA compliant. The apartment manager said the apartment was ADA compliant but it was at all for a disabled person. Nothing was changed to meet the needs for any disability--the toilets, the fixtures, the tub, the cabinets, the flooring, etc. I am disabled as well, and I bought a house and changed out the garden tub with a walk-in tub and it already had a walk-in shower in the master bath. I updated both toilets with taller raised handicap toilets to protect my hips and knees. Every little bit helps tremendously. There's still lots of things I do not like about my house, and I currently use a rollator but need a wheelchair. When the time comes to transition to a wheelchair, I will definitely need to move. There is not enough space for me to navigate with a wheelchair. Especially leaving through my laundry room to my garage. Builders do not think about ADA either.
Good information. I Have the magnet and its really good to have and use.
Great 👍
Great information! Making a fire plan with my family this week!
Awesome! So glad to hear.
We lived in an upstairs apartment when my mobility started going downhill. It was terrible. For a year I only left when I had appointments and for holidays. I couldn’t even use my wheelchair in the apartment. I had to use my crutches. I fell a few times and getting back up was awful. I was in a really dark place, the only reason I’d get out of bed was to take care of my son who was a toddler at the time. I’m so grateful., we were able to find the apartment we live in now. It’s not perfect, but I have a ramp in front and I can get around in my wheelchair for the most part. I really feel for that woman, it is a terrible way to live. And I was lucky I still have some mobility left.
Do the automatic wheel chairs take you through the security system
I would check. But I will assume they do.
🙂
United spinal works to assist wheelchair users during natural disasters. They have good information concerning wheelchair users and equipment.
Good topic
As a pedestrian there is an unspoken caste system in the USA and it is drivers bullying those trying to cross a driveway and zebra crossings. Drivers need to get impulse control training or have their license taken away. Police/the sheriff needs to give tickets to reckless dangerous drivers that bully and endanger people at the driveways and at zebra crossings. All safety laws are ignored and drivers are given the entire priority. It is barbaric. What is so upsetting is cities even get ADA funding yet many streets and sidewalks are unsafe for the invisibly disabled, elderly, blind, children or people in wheelchairs to access.
Well said my friend.
i am glad and thankful that i have got my electric wheelchair which enables me to move around without tiring my special body which is partially in heaven.
Thanks for this video. I recently purchased a very basic and quite heavy manual wheelchair because I have a lot of problems with my legs, and they are weak and painful so I can't walk very far or very long. You mentioned you started off in a manual wheelchair and I'm just wondering if all manual wheelchairs are the same when it comes to self-propelling? Mine is so much hard work to just move myself a few feet! I see people here on TH-cam pushing themselves along much faster and (seemingly?) much easier! Is it just that it looks easier for them, or are there actually wheelchairs that are easier to propel?? You mention sport wheelchairs. I'm guessing they are probably the more expensive kind? I'm very disappointed with the chair I got, as I really need a mobility aid that will get me off my weak and painful legs! For now I have had to settle for a forearm walker.
Hello there. I am sorry you got such a heavy wheelchair. Yes, there are sports, light wieght wheelchairs. They are more expensive, but worth it. You also might think of getting a power wheelchair or a scooter (cheaper). Scooters are less expensive, you would need to practice maneuvering them, because they are longer in shape. But this might be your answer. Check things out, let us know what you decided to do. Liza
It also depends on how does your body function, whether you have strenghth, dexterity in your hands, whether your body can endure physical effort, what is reason for your issues, etc. Did you have check up with doctor before buying your wheelchair? Did you get doctor's referal with instructions which wheelchair to buy? In my country, if you get doctor's approval and refferal for wheelchair, health insurance fully or partially cover the costs of wheelchair - either manual or electric, depending on your needs.
indiferent de spatiu,in orice zona cartier,oras,... poate fi pus un indicator,nu e mare lucru si asa esti si in siguranta, pentru ca soferii ar vedea semnul si ar avea grija in zona aia.Siguranta este la fel de importanta ca si sanatatea (regardless of space, in any neighborhood, city,... a sign can be put up, it's not a big deal and you're safe that way, because drivers would see the sign and be careful in that area. Safety is just as as important as health )
I will create a special video you can use for a county meeting, a budget meeting, a state meeting for a request for improvement on crosswalks and sidewalks in your area. It requires some research, so give me some time to post it.
That’s Brilliantly Awesome! Thank You so much! 🫶🏻❤️✨
