As both a Sailor Moon and a fighting game fan, this game really is a treat and it's nice to see it gets to have it's own little time under the the FGC spotlight. Just a shame Saturn's not playable in this version to give us the whole team. She's in the SuperS fighting game, but I'm not as keen on the music in that version and the game's not quite as funky!
And I thought the damage in Super Turbo was crazy…

Does no one play the updated version with Saturn?
Generally speaking no sadly, it was developed by a different team than the first game and thus isn't as good for competitive play, due to various moves being changed into worse versions, lots of weird nerfs across the cast, and though it's not as important, significantly worse sound design haha. Saturn is also really unfinished, with her kick buttons actually being unblockable and her throws being completely reversed.

Most old games simulate transparency by turning sprites on and off every frame. You probably watched the video in 30fps, so you were only seeing every second frame, where the projectile is not visible. Switch the vid to 60fps and it'll look normal.

I got to play a bunch of Sailor Moon S for the first time way back at Canada Cup 2018. Absolutely magical game, and you'd see completely new broken/awesome tech in every match you watched. I was surprised at how good and smooth it felt to control, for a SNES-era fighting game. Definitely way ahead of its time in many ways. Most games that end up in (or purposely go for) the "everyone is OP so nobody is" state end up being somewhat unplayable, but this is one of the few gems that comes out pristine for it.
Well yeah, they got busted defensive mechanics that allow the BS on offense to be ok. Guard cancels are grate (play skullgirls by the way, we got it there two; sort of)

Super S is a kind of tragedy of a game; they had another dev team make it. The cast got universal nerfs, the soundtrack is terrible, and saturn is basically not functional. Saturn kicks don't trigger preblock, so theyre just unblockable. The game feels like a sad afterthought slapped together from the SMS assets :( We have a community hack, called Fighter S, that fixes a number of these issues. But still it only exists as a silly side game for SMS players now.
It’s got the same engine but the changes in fireballs shoots it in the foot. Uranus is untouched. Neptune can’t reliably guard cancel into DP due to gaining a useless charge fireball that takes priority over the DP input, damage was lowered for most specials for the worse. You really only play it to see how poorly implemented Saturn is, to abuse Chibi’s new desperation, or maybe even abuse Mercury’s lower angled desperation.
I watched this again and realized there's a surprising amount of similarities to Street Fighter The Movie The Game. Both games have guard cancel moves available to all characters, desperation moves at low health that can repair otherwise ineffective characters (Chun Li in particular), and I-frame bugs bad enough to ban in competitive play (Zangief and Guile getting permanent invulnerability against all non-projectile moves if they continuously jump after a certain super). And there's a tremendous amount of knowledge checking in general, particularly in how throws and teching work.

I wish this game actually worked well on FightCade. Been having lots of issues with stuttering and whatnot. :(
We run all our netplay brackets on fightcade. SNES9x isnt perfect, but if youre getting consistent stuttering then something is wrong with your setup. If youre playing people outside of your country, or far away, then increase the delay by a frame or two.
You definitely have to tweak the settings a bit. Automatic rollback doesn’t work properly for snes games on FC2, so changing the rollback frames manually is a must.

Wow l never thought a game like this would be dissected this thoroughly less make it onto the esports scene l did enjoy this game back in the SNES heyday, and still have it in storage, just want to know if SuperS “balanced” anything and would like to see an analysis of Saturn in a future video

SuperS lowered damage on a lot of specials and desperations, changed one move from every character for the worse, didn’t touch any of Uranus’ OP stuff, and poorly implemented Saturn as a character. Saturn’s main issue is having unblockable far kicks (that also lack collision, though you only see this if Uranus does wake up forward dash thru Saturns kicks). But she also has an air fireball that does a huge chunk of damage, two bad grounded fireballs, and her throws are implemented incorrectly - using her staff on kick throw (which throws the opposite way of the direction you input) and kicking with her punch throw. On top of that, her jHP has a dead zone next to here where it feels like that’s where they meant to implement her air kick throw since again it uses her staff. 😂
Ah, sad to hear since Hotaru’s my fav of the franchise followed by Minako/Venus
