La première fois qu'ai vu et entendu Maestro Kissin c'est à Tours en 1988 avec l'orchestre national d'URSS sous la direction de Maestro Gergiev dans le concerto No 1 de Tchaikovsky, E. Kissn est alors âgé de 16 ans ! Éblouissant, puissant et si mature déjà. Puis une deuxième fois aux "Fêtes musicales de la grange de Meslay" pour un hommage (Préludes de Chopin) à Sviatoslav Richter décédé l'année précédente en 1997. Impressionnant et encore plus dans la maîtrise total de son art de musicien-pianiste-interprète. E. Kissin a eu la gentillesse de m'offrir son autographe sur la page de garde d'un livre à propos d'Orphée. Un jeune homme simple, abordable, gentil et très courtois.

Why don't I warm to Kissin? Hard to pin down, but I think it has to do with two things. First, his playing lacks spontaneity and unpredictability. You get the feeling (at least, I do) that he has it all worked out and would play everything exactly the same way 100 times. Listen, for example, to the little Bagatelle op. 33 no. 5: does he ever vary the repeated opening phrase? No. Not once. It's played in precisely the same way every single time. So most of the time you know exactly what is coming next, which doesn't make for engaging (or engaged) listening. Another thing is there's too much foreground and not enough background; almost everything is up front, 'out there', projected to the back of the hall; there's no 'sub-text' behind or underneath the surface, no sense of bringing the listener in. Listen, for example, to Variation 5 of op. 76. It's surely too daylit, lacking any mystery or 'atmosphere'. Of course, he's an amazing pianist (ça va sans dire), but there's a lot more to playing the piano than playing the piano. Sorry. Thanks for posting.
With all due respect to Kissin, Daniil Trifonov is the greatest pianist I've ever heard. He does everything you described...and more.

Still not at the same level of Claudio Arrau. Beethoven in the hands of Claudio Arrau has no equal. No wonder Arrau’s interpretation of Beethoven has been by many musicians as the best in time by any pianist.

I'd under-rated Kissin before this. Excellent Beethoven rendition. Every note and phrase audible and meaningful.
When people are tired, they have bags under eyes. Also, when you eat, your eyes receive vitamins and minerals, and as long as they do, your bags will be there. Once bags are gone, then your eyes no longer receive proper nutrients.
