Are We Ready for Rim-to-Rim? | Misogi Adventure Series
This is it-the last hike in our Misogi training series before we tackle the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim! Mt. Loafer, located in the southern end of Utah’s Wasatch Range, may not be the longest hike (around 11 miles and 3500 vertical feet), but it was the perfect final test for our gear, shoes, and everything we’ve learned over the past few months.
In this hike, we made sure our Hoka hiking shoes were ready for the big adventure ahead and tested our nutrition strategy of snacking on a fixed schedule. We also practiced staying mentally focused and managing discomfort, all critical for what’s coming next.
We’ve learned so much during this Misogi journey-from the epic views of Glacier National Park’s Highline Trail to the tough climbs on Mt. Timpanogos and the endurance challenge at Red Castle Lake. Each step has prepared us for something bigger, and now, we’re ready to face the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim.
💪 What’s a Misogi? It’s all about doing something challenging and uncomfortable to build resilience and push your limits. Inspired by The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter, our goal has been to embrace discomfort and grow stronger from it.
🎥 Misogi Series Recap:
1️⃣ Glacier National Park (Highline Trail)
2️⃣ Mt. Timpanogos
3️⃣ Red Castle Lake
4️⃣ Mt. Loafer (this video!)
5️⃣ Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim (coming next!)
💥 Lessons We Took From This Hike:
• Gear is dialed in, but we’ll pack extra socks!
• Frequent snacking works-energy levels stayed solid.
• Mental preparation is just as important as physical readiness.
The Grand Canyon is next. Are we ready? You bet we are. Let’s go! 🚶♂️🌄

Exploring Rainier's Secrets: Unveiling the Enchanted Falls!
Have to agree with other comments. Just because you can, does not mean you should set up camp right in front of Skull Rock. Shame on you!
I was up there in the year 2000 taking the backside tourist route. Always wondered what the goat trail was like. Thanks for posting such a detailed video of what it is really like. There are so many spots there where the exposure is terminal and definitely not for your average hiker. Only for the experienced and fearless. I would never take the risks that you guys did especially going back down. Happy with the tourist route and agree about the view from the top.
What time of year did y’all go first time when the mosquitoes were so bad? Great videos
July was when we went the first time. By the first week in September they were all gone. Thank you!
You guys are friggin awesome!!
Jamie said to say “Bless you” - thanks for being such a good supporter!
I can’t believe some people think it’s okay to set up camp right next to Skull Rock! That’s such a unique spot that should be available for everyone to enjoy, not turned into a personal campsite.
That’s exactly what it is… a campsite with fire pit and everything. People used to have bonfires inside the cave because the rock is all burned. We were gone the next morning before anyone arrived and didn’t see a single soul.
Good Job guys! Proud of you both! Beautiful country :)
Thanks Lorrie!
❤ lovely 🌹😢
Thank you so much for watching!
I have no doubt you'll succeed in the Grand Canyon.
Thanks for always watching and being our cheerleader!
Beautiful lake - and nice to hear your experiance with the HOKA's. I also am a big Saloman shoe person, I have been looking into HOKA's, your video is getting me closer to pulling the trigger. If I may ask, which models did you choose?
Thanks! I think if you’re doing long distances you’ll enjoy the Hokas too. I can go 10-12 miles just fine with my Saloman’s but beyond that my feet get pretty sore. I wanted something really plush with lots of cushion so I went with the Stinson 7 trail running shoe. Jamie went with the Speed Mafate 7. My friend ended up getting the Speedgoats and he liked those too. They have a pretty cool shoe finder online where you can plug in what you like and it will make recommendations.
@ Thanks that is very helpful,
I hike the Uintas almost every week. I've put in 255 hikes and 4,300 miles over the past 5 years. The Uintas were carved out by glaciers and the terrain is very rocky and wet. I've tried almost every brand of hiking boot, and in my opinion, Hokas are the very best that I've used in the Uintas. The extra cushioning has kept my feet from hurting while hiking on the very rocky ground.
Use a comb to get those cactus out.
Great advice. Thank you!
I really like this hike
Thanks!
You guys are amazing. I got dizzy watching you on that narrow shelf. Best of luck achieving your goal. We'll be watching.
Thanks for being some of our biggest fans!
Another awesome adventure!
Thanks so much! When are you planning to do the R2R2R? We completed our adventure in October and may have to do that one the next time!
Did the FJ owner have to re-gear after putting on 35” tires?
You know, that’s a very good question. I’m not sure if it’s been re-geared. We bought it with the lift and 35’s a couple years ago. It doesn’t seem overly sluggish so it might be. We re-geared our previous Land Cruiser and it made a difference.
Awesome guys. Rim to Rim is on my bucket list. My challenge for next year is to run a 50 mile ultra for my 50th year, Good luck with your training!
That’s fantastic! What a great feat that will be. We did end up surviving the Rim to Rim. It was an incredible trip. Stay tuned for the video at some point. We’re not really runners but I could see doing the R2R2R on back to back days. That would be a challenge for us.
I'm sorry but I get scared just watching you get that close to the edge.
Yes it’s scary at times!
Wow. Those hiking days are over for us. My challenge is going to be eating a 22 ounce steak. Lol.
That is a nice challenge! Love it!
Follow us on our journey to prepare for the Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim trail - or our 2024 misogi! This Highline hike is a training hike and was inspired by Michael Easter's book _The Comfort Crisis_ About *_The Comfort Crisis_* Michael Easter’s _The Comfort Crisis_ challenges us to break free from our modern comfort zones and experience discomfort as a way to grow stronger, more resilient, and more alive. One powerful idea from the book is the concept of a "misogi"-an intense challenge that stretches us beyond what we think we're capable of. Here at **Xplor Adventure**, we’re helping people find their own misogi by inspiring them to get off the couch, take on the outdoors, and embrace the kind of challenges that lead to real personal growth. Ready to start your journey? Let us know in the comments below what you plan to do! Even if it's as simple as just going camping for one night if you've never been camping. Great video. Really appreciated the content of this overlanding area in Arizona. Great job with your meals and overall video production.
Thank you, really appreciate it!
Guess I gotta put the rock sliders back on
Love it!
Thank you!
Beautiful scenery and fun looking trails. We have a Jeep Rubicon and this looks like a very doable trail to explore. Where did you guys start out at (trail head)?
We technically started in Fairview and drove south and then explored some of the side trails along Skyline. We exited at Mayfield but there was still more to explore and we want to get back and explore the southern half. You’ll be able to do it all in a Rubicon!
@@xplor_adventure Thanks for the reply. The Four Runner looks very capable on those soggy sections of trail. Did you air down your tires? Do you think it’s probably dried out up there this time of year? Thx.
Nice video. I ser6you have A TRD pro, it looks like you have a lift on it? Just checking because my pro is stock and wondering if I could make this trip. Thank you
Yes a stock 4Runner will have zero problems. We took a side trail that was a little tight but as far as clearance goes, a stock 4Runner would do awesome!
Great video. Really enjoyed the nicely presented information on the trail. We live in Southern Utah and have put it on our list of trails to run next summer. Thank you. Shawn and Corinne ( Travels of Red Rover).
Thanks Shawn and Corinne! It’s a must do to get out of the heat for sure. If you’re used to the St George or surrounding area heat, bring your jackets! We’ve been caught up there during summer thunderstorms and it’s amazing how much the temperature drops.
Absolutely wonderful video!
Thank you very much!
Another great video, guys!
Thanks for your loyal support!
Can make it there in a standard SUV without much clearance from the ground? High clearance vehicles 100% necessary?
Yes a stock 4wd (not lifted) would make it just fine. Even potentially Subarus could make it driving slow.
SO BEAUTIFUL THANKS FOR SHARING IT WITH US ❤ S AFRCA
Thanks so much for watching! Glad to have some viewers from South Africa!
What kinda roof rack do you have ?
It’s an Eezi Awn K9 roof rack. Very pleased with it!
@@xplor_adventure thank you for responding!! 🙏🏽
What tire size you guys have on T4R?
I’ve got the 285/70R17’s. Basically 33’s.
good job, try wilbur next
Thanks, we’ll check it out!
When my palms start sweating while watching a video, I know it’s treacherous. I lived in GNP for a summer, but never had a chance to hike Reynolds. Nice hike!
Thanks! Yes, I can still feel my heart rate rise whenever I watch that video and relive those moments.

It’s a great place, isn’t it?!
We were just wondering where you guys were. Great that you're back. Now get on that cookbook!
Thanks for being such loyal followers! We’re getting closer on that cookbook. 😀
Great video! What a cool place.
Thank you! Yes, it’s turned out to be one of our favorite adventures this year so far.
Amazing video, great work! Question for ya, what size goodyear wranglers are those on the 4runner?
Thanks so much. Those are 285/70R17’s. I have a 3 inch lift.
You all are climbing up the mountain on loose rocks. Is that even a trail?
It’s not really a trail you’d find on a map or something like AllTrails. It’s more of a route that’s been marked out on mountaineering guidebooks.
what time of year is this?
Labor Day last year. It’s a great time to go because the mosquitoes are dead.
the irony of saying your on mars without leaving earth, since nasa mars rover crews have been photographed in such areas, your tax dollars funding the biggest fraud perpetrators in history..!!
It’s interesting how Hollywood has partnered up with the government over the years to create propaganda.
Wow😮
💥ACTION!💥💋ADVENTURE!💋 💀DANGER!💀Its just a vacation for you.
Thanks for commenting! Yes, we do love that action and adventure, don’t we?!
Your videos are great, beautiful scenery. To ease some of the bumpy try letting some air out of your tires. Start with 20 lbs in each tire. Get a small air compressor to refill the tires when done wheeling.
Thanks so much! Yeah, we have an ARB air compressor under the hood and usually take the tires down to 15-18 psi depending on the terrain.
@@xplor_adventure Yeah about 5 minutes after I sent that suggestion, I saw on one of your videos that you were airing up those tires. But I was too late and had already sent my reply. Love your videos and content. Your wife should create a Cookbook for sale. Her recipes look delicious! Anxious to watch your next video! Maybe we will see you in the Swell one of these days! Last time I was there I camped at the Little Grand Canyon, was really cool waking up on the overlook! Buckhorn Wash was really cool with all the Indian Artwork and Dinosaur print!
Another beautiful and great adventure - glad Evan is doing alright!
Thanks Lorrie!
Every time I think I want a drone, a video like this pops up. You aren't the only channel I've watched this week that had drone issues. Sorry for the loss. Thanks for the video. It's been awhile since I was in that area.
Thanks for the reply. Yes, losing a drone sucks. I had insurance thankfully but it the deductible was still pricey. I think you can do just fine without a drone!
Great adventure. Sorry about the drone. Glad your son is ok.
Thanks, definitely appreciate it! Thankfully we were able to replace the drone as I had it insured.
We did the same trip over memorial weekend amazing landscape. check it out bctadventures
Did that in a VW Bug !
That would actually be a blast!
Can’t wait to go back!
Looks like a good spot to test skid plates!
There are some hairy spots!
Well done to each of you. You knew where you needed to stop. I have been up Reynolds Mountain maybe 16 times and each time is amazing. The rock is rotten for sure. Thanks for using my book as well. Blake Passmore from Climb Glacier National Park. Congrats on climbing one of Glacier’s iconic peaks!
Wow, thank you Blake! Your climbing book was so invaluable. I love Glacier, I grew up in Columbia Falls and have had the chance to climb a couple peaks but now I live in Utah and usually only get a short time up in MT during the summers. Any other peaks with a similar difficulty (or less) that you would recommend climbing?
Pollock is super cool and has way less horrible rock. Siyeh is another really cool climb.
