Creating UI Sounds from Almost Any Sound Source
In this video, I demonstrate an experimental method for creating UI sounds in spectral editing software. I used iZotope RX and Snap Heap, though any comparable software should do the job too.

Soothing sounds to fall asleep to 😍 This is a synth patch that I made to resemble the sound of a swarm of flies. All sounds you hear are synthesised. The primary software used is VCV Rack 2, with Phase Plant hosted within it via the VST Host module. something about this soundfont just tickles my brain amazing work!!
next how to synthesize a clap ?
I'll add it to the ideas list! 👏
Super cool! I love the theory behind this and how you laid it out.
o very neat, thank you!
The process is clear, methodical and well analysed. Incredibly well thought out, I assume you've made a fair few of these bird calls/nature sounds with sound design?
Thanks for the kind words! I've probably made 10 or so different bird species so far. I intend to grow that list but some birds prove to be drastically harder to synthesise than others!
It was realistic enough to get my cats looking around, so kudos
awsome work... sadly there is no way to download the preset
Thanks for the feedback! I've now added a link to download the preset in the description
You should do cicadas next! This is really cool!
Sweet lol
Peanut gallery here... I want my flying fly to have some volume swell along with the pan to simulate distance. (To get nitty gritty... a distant fly should not be able to pan as fast as a close-up loud fly. Also I looked up doppler effect for 10 miles per hour. It's about 98.7% to 101.3% depending on towards or away. Could this be paired with volume swells? Get louder and pitch rising, get softer pitch descending. I'm thinking of the great sound a bee makes it whizzes by you in a field...you can hear the doppler flip. )
All valid points! The "Remap" module would come in handy for most of those ideas. For example you could achieve the volume swell by connecting the randomiser to a remap module which is set to have a bump in the middle in order to make the fly loudest when in the centre. I think it'd be tricky to create an accurate doppler panner for a looping sound purely within Phase Plant because you'd have to account for the fact that the insect could change direction which would be a challenge to account for! Though I have created short "doppler pass-by" sounds in Phase Plant/Snap Heap, which you can achieve by having a curve (set to a linear ramp shape) and two Remap modules. The first Remap could be assigned to the volume and would have a high value in the middle, and the second Remap could be assigned to the pitch and panning and this could be set to replicate the doppler shift curve (high value at the start, then flipping to a low value at the middle)
lovely, great to see people think out of the box with synths. this would very funny to combine with a nice spatial panning simulation. a room convolution could be a cool addition too
And for tonal bells, have your partials forming a minor triad and a major triad an octave above, plus one undertone one octave lower than the main tone.
wild
so cool
neat
This is quite relaxing. Well done. Love it!
white bellbird pls :D
Love those things - they kinda already sound like a synthesiser!
Wow, I've also emulated the sound of a common wood pigeon in Phase Plant before. It's amazing to me that someone else has attempted the exact same thing. 😃 Good job.👍 The biggest difference in my method was to add a macro to modulate the volume level with a noise oscillator, to get that breathy throat sound that's part of the sound. I think this way you get a little bit closer to the real sound than by using a high fq lfo as you have done.
@@Mimang86 Haha, quite a coincidence! I've used a similar method to that when trying to add a kind of "buzzy" high end to sounds. I think your method allows for a greater amount of flexibility because you can add a filter to the noise oscillator before it is sent to modulate the main oscillator, meaning you can fine tune the effect it has. Thanks for watching!
@@mattjhart Yes, exactly. And often you don't need a separate filter, as you can directly either control the slope of the noise oscillator, or use one of the tuned noise sources and set the fq/harmonic to your liking. Plus you get a bit more random fluctuation to the sound as well, which makes it more natural to me.
Your video is absolutely amazing, and it's so thoughtful of you to include subtitles. It’s been incredibly helpful to me-thank you so much!
Excellent video, thank you!
This is so cool I want to try this
Excellent. Thanks
This series is amazing. I’m so excited to see what else you create!
Dude that's unreal jajjajajaja
a keys visualization showing what note do you play would be very helpful
@@ArchieVx-o5b I'll keep this in mind for future videos, thanks for the feedback!
You’re a true gem 🙏 this content is golden . Keep up the good work man, love your stuff. Happy producing ❤️☺️
Ooooo get yourself this patch running on MiRack with some inputs from Holonist and you could adapt the birdsong depending on location and time of day and wind speed, that would be wilddd
incredible work man
Great video
Such a strange and cool thing to synthesize
cooool. well patched!
Great one, i would love to see you synthesise a cock, i listen to them every morning and the sound is just so interesting
Interesting
LOVE this
Taking requests? Limpkin... I call it the electric guitar bird.
Just had a listen and they sound great! A bit like sounds that some gulls make I reckon. I have a general plan for what birds I'll cover in the next 2 or 3 videos, which are intended to progressively get more complex so that the series is easy to learn from when viewed in order. For the time being these will mostly be birds that are familiar to me in real life, but I'll probably branch out a bit more eventually!
Idk how I ended up here with my algorithm but this 9 mins got me through with working Thank you 🙏
I am starting to think... using your system's limits... You could design a basic datatype for these. A set of the most basic variables you use every time you make one of these. Durations, fundementals, spectrum shape... vibrato widths and frequencies. The "basic" variables would not necessaily capture your whole work flow... but at least give a very clear jumping off point.
It's true, there will be a number of factors that will be similar between a lot of bird sounds! I haven't yet explored it personally, but I reckon the basic concepts used here could be usable to design custom bird sounds not based on any specific real-world birds. I suppose part of what interests me about this is finding out what causes a sound to sound "bird-like" as opposed to sounding obviously synthetic. Thanks for watching!
well done, i would love to see more of this type of content :) keep it up!
This is an incredible nuanced hobby, it’s good to see you’re so into it 👍🏾
I just looked this up and found your video from 1 day ago, which is funny because I wasn't expecting to find anything Incredibly detailed, thank you!
Great job, I loved every second of it; curiosity driven exploration at its finest
Excellent stuff. Think this is such an enjoyable way to practice audio synthesis!

this sounds really well made, if you want to spice up the visuals, hide some text images in the track, like maybe a cake?
