Buck Owens had a good friend in a small town in OK that we lived close to. My married mom would drive over to the guy's mechanic garage and they'd take an extra long lunch hour, if you know what I mean. I got a lot of treats while waiting for the "lunch" hour to be over. True story.
I always, always had a crush on Don Rich. So sad that he died while riding his motorcycle to visit his family and hit a curb. Buck never got over the loss of his good friend, they say.
As a 9 year old, when Buck first broke this one out, our WW2 Vets were still in their 40’s and 50’s, I remember being a little confused, as he sang about being in love with a Japanese Girl. No one ever explained it to me but, as time went on, I got the feeling this song was part of the healing process between our two nations. And yes, I first heard this on my transistor radio made in Japan. I still enjoy this song at 61.
The guitar work on this live cut is phenomenal. The steel is throbbing creating the vibe, the bass and light drum work ace the rythymm perfectly, the lead guitar is so smooth creating that oriental Japanese visual environment. One can close their eyes while listening and envision the scenario while fantasizing about being the soldier in the song. Bucks delivery was outstanding and he was so great! Thanks!
I grew up in the 60s and 70s in Tulare County California everyone knew who Buck Owens was from the time he used to pick cotton until he was a superstar everybody was a fan of Buck Owens then he haw came along and it really made him Top Dog
I fell in love with a girl made in Japan in 1975. I was a 21 year old U.S. Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Japan. Yasuko and I were together for over 2 years and I lived with her off base in her small house, along with her 3 year old daughter. I rotated back to the States in 1978.
I knew of him growing up. The country music playing in my grandparents pickup. Many years later, it’s just so good. I love the country I’ve grown to love.
I grew up listening to this song with my grandparents on the rez. So many memories, as a kid I had a friend in 6th grade that was Japanese and I had a small crush on her but never saw her again after that year. I always wondered what happened to her
There was only a few really iconic bands back in the day in Country Music. Haggard's Strangers, Cash's Tennessee Three, Conway's Twitty Birds and Buck Owens' Buckaroos. Here, in these later years, there is a very young Jerry Brightman on the steel, as Tom Brumley left a couple yrs earlier to join Rick Nelson's band. Doyle Curtsinger on rhythm guitar and Jerry Wiggins on the drums having replaced Willie Cantu.
This is a great song but for those of you that hasn’t heard the Kid Sonny from Australia do this song are really missing out… Like I said Owens doses a great job but do a search and you’ll find this kid and it’s simply amazing how he sounds.

I first heard the song Made in Japan in my earliest Navy days in Norfolk,VA on 9/23/1972.
A friend of mine since childhood just lost his mother; she was Japanese. She was a wonderful lady, prayers to you Mike. My favorite Buck Owens song!
I gained more respect for the bucker when he finally came out of the closet as a gay man It must have been a difficult decision
This is REAL country music talent not like todays attempt
Looks and sounds like lip sync to me.
Obviously do you see a microphone?? but the instruments look and sound real
I loved all of Bucks songs but this one is my favorite. ❤️
Vote 4 Buck. 2024. Game Fuckin Over!
Oriental dub stops on guitar! Nice!

Beautiful Buck. Thanks.
Great song, great singer.
First time hearing this one. Good song.
Rip Faye Brewer (Faye Hardin when she wrote this with Bob Morris) Miss you!!!
Don Richs guitar makes this song.
I love this song and remember it from when I was a little kid ❤😊
Amazing technology they had back then,...no cables,..no microphones,..yet studio quality,...
oh my god, in 35 years of life, I just heard this song for the first time, I'm in love. How had I not known this before...?

The matching guitars made everything about this absolutely perfect
This is about the 12th thousand time I've listened to Buck singing this 😰

Love Buck Owens!❤
You can see the hurt in Bucks eyes after the death of his dear friend Don Rich
sounds like shit

Great old song, but I wonder if anyone noticed that Buck was playing the wrong chords after the key change? His guitar was obviously not mic'ed up.
The last of his number 1 hits
Awesome. Don was not a little man. I play Telecasters, and they don't look so tiny when I hold them. I see why Buck called him "Big Don".
I was raised listening to country music and had forgotten how pretty it actually was.
My fav song by him
No smoke and lights , no cussing , no talking about beer and tractors and being wasted .
Wonderful song! Beautiful melody, violins mix country and oriental styles - very unique.
What a Great Entertainer Buck was and a fabulous band alongside.....
The chords to this are as follows: F, Gm and C. It modulates one half step, after the first verse, to: F#, G#m and C#.
