The Lost Community of Misión Vieja/Old Mission
At the heart of the Whittier Narrows where the San Gabriel River flows between the Montebello and Puente hill ranges is a forgotten center of greater Los Angeles: Misión Vieja or Old Mission. Abundant water and plentiful plant and animal life made this area a magnet for human settlement from the indigenous people of untold generations to establishment of the original site of Mission San Gabriel to the ranches and farms of later years, including those owned by the Temple family. While much of the area is now a flood control zone, remnants of Old Mission are still with us. This talk is given by Museum Director Paul R. Spitzzeri.

First and foremost, I love the Chinese; especially the medicine herbs. In October 1871 a simmering small-scale war involving three Chinese gangs exploded into a riot that engulfed Los Angeles. A large mob of white anglo-saxon's rampaged thru the small town then mainly a ranching center. They were transported not too far from San Francisco CA in the shrimp industry. Then they migrated to another country not only did they have to perform as sitting ducks but also they stayed as shields.

I am happy to see Scott Zesch partnering with the Homestead. "The Chinatown War: Chinese Los Angeles and the Massacre of 1871" is the most complete and accurate book on this subject. It's the only book that mentions the San Bernardino torture incident, which was a major source of the conflicts between the Chinese factions. Zesch also does a great job explaining the legal matters that led to the convictions being overturned.

Thank you for your presentation, I've been waiting for a lecture about this subject for a while now. What blows my mind is the amount tigers housed at the Barnes Circus. I was raised in that area in the 1980s and I heard stories of a circus that would parade through the streets of Venice with elephants, big cats, bears, and other exotic animals. A few years ago I began researching Barnes Circus and I found these stories to be true. I know you had a lot to talk about in only an hour, but I wanted to add to your list of exotic zoos in Los Angeles during the 1920s. Monkey Island was very popular and was located across the street from where Universal Studio sits today. Abbott Kinney (founder of Venice, CA), had built an exotic zoo at the end of his pleasure pier. The zoo housed monkeys, ostriches, camels, and two cinnamon bears. One of the bears had sadly killed a two-year girl walking by the bear's cage. Kenney had removed the dangerous animals from his zoo, however, in 1920 the pier caught fire, destroying his zoo and everything inside. Kinney had two aquarium's one was located by the ostrich farm at the end of his pier. He also built another aquarium down at Windward circle. I know that BT Barnum had tried to find a way to keep whales and other large sea animals in captivity and had failed. I can't say what Kinney's scientific methods were in keeping large sea animals in captivity but I was able to locate an old photo of people feeding a captured adult elephant seal. Venice and Santa Monica had once been the elephant seal's natural feeding grounds before the pleasure pier era. There would be crowds of seals migrating right past the piers every year, making them easy targets for humans. Starting in 1994 a Venice Beach Local historian, Jeff Stanton, created a very handy website about Venice Beach, Ocean Park, and Santa Monica history. I don't always use this website as my main source for information, I always doubt check third-party sources anyways, but he has the most obscure articles that are fun to read. Thanks for listening Julie Howell.

What ever happened to "government out of our lives"? Of course, many who say that are the very same people who want government interference against those whom they feel affront their own self righteous, arbitrary morals.
