Has SATCOM Made HF Radio Obsolete?
มุมมอง 10K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
Recent disasters (especially the Maui wildfires) has sparked an interesting discussion about over-the-horizon (OTH) grid down communications. Leaving some asking, "Has satellite communications made HF radio obsolete?" This video makes some comparisons between the two (SATCOM vs. HF). You might have already guessed the final answer. We always try to promote self reliance over being completely re...

John Jacob's Personal Comms Go Bag PART 1 AmRRON Comms Up!
😊❤🎉
Thank you for the training video. I got my comms up, but this is a great resource to send others to.
I have learned so much from these videos.
I've been using FLAMP for many years, but learned a few things from the video. Well done and on topic. Looking forward to the next one. Amrron ROCKS.
Nicely done as always sir
My first time doing T-REX will be this exercise. I expect to learn a lot. I will fail some things and that is when I will learn the most. Thank you to all who are making this happen!👍
I have now viewed all of this series up to FLAMP. All well done and useful. I am looking forward to the future episodes. Thank you.
This was a perfect and very useful video. I've already downloaded the packages some time ago, but haven't explored them yet. This will save anyone learning how to set this up some valuable time. Thank you sir for your effort.
I thought this video probably could be skipped with my background. I was wrong. I did not know about an Android APP for FLMSG. Thank you.
Very very well done. I am doing all in this series and look forward to future episodes. Thank you.
Very well done. I have been using this with AmRRON for some time but this added items I did not know. Thank you.
Thank you for making these training videos!
Another great training video. Thanks!
😊❤😊
You do not need a license to receive any signal.
Right. Just like we've been saying, and which is explained in the video.
You don't need a Ham licence to use a receiver. No matter what frequencies the receiver covers. Yes it's legal to listen to the Aircraft bands, the police bands or any other bands of your choosing.
Right. Just like it says in the video.
Generally it is illegal to receive transmissions not for the public (Braodcast). Even to receive radioamateurs you should have a special license. Now, generally, Countries are not going after anyone only receiving....
@@jplacido9999 Not the case in the UK but other countries may have different rules.
@@MENSA.lady2 In the past, in almost every Country in the world you would have to pay a tax (nowadays still exists as a "contribution" ) to have a LW, MW, SW, VHF and UHF Broadcast (Radio and TV) and those were the only radio transmissions avaiable to the general public. To receive radioamateur transmissions you would have a special license (,with a "call sign") to do it legally (and have all the necessary antennas on the roof, for the purpose...). Most Countries still have this scheme, but don't enforce it...
Greetings, I am installing CommStat and I see Puerto Rico (U.S. territory) was not included in the settings! Is there a way to add it?
Just a heads-up, I found out that with my Windows 10 system that I wasn't able to find the right "comm port" to use for my sound card but, after looking just above the systems comm ports I found the "AUDIO Inputs and Outputs' and this is where I was able to find the right setting for FLDigi. Thanks again for the video JJS...
Open to ideas and feed back, could be useful
Awesome, thank you sir.
Just found your videos. Very good information. Have you considered posting to ℛ︎⌰︎ℳ︎β︎ℒ︎ℇ︎? It is less ☭︎☢︎☣︎☹︎☠︎ than YT. Thank you.
Thank you! Clear, concise, extraordinarily helpful. Well done!
If you understand exactly how sat phone / messengers work you'd rethink them as a go-to option for shtf.
Excellent!!
😊❤😊
11:00, the information should be as follows. "LSB is used by HF HAMs below 10 MHz (160 + 80 + 40M bands, with the exception of the 60 meter band in some countries who use USB), USB is used by HF HAMs above 10 MHz (30 + 20 + 17 + 15 + 12 + 10M bands)." LSB is not mostly used for voice on most HF bands, it is split between LSB & USB depending which band you are on. An easier way to remember this is below 10 MHz = mostly LSB, above 10 MHz = USB There are also AM & FM mode HF HAM users, but these are far less than those who use SSB modes. USB for digital is stated correctly.
You're absolutely correct. Although, that's a quite a bit more information than I wanted to include for a very basic intro video for non-licensed shortwave listeners. I had the 80m and 40m bands in mind, as those are the bands we use for all of our regional nets. Thanks for the added technical info! Spot on!
Very useful information about the AmRRon Digital msgs. Looking forward to more detailed instructions.
I have the tecsun h 501x Mw lw fm stereo sw ssb 5 band disktop receiver
Wow. Very thorough, great video!
Thank you!
And let’s face it, even though we have ham satellites, and I have used them, it is way easier to just do HF.
Great video!! Get information, give information. I highly recommend AMRRONs training. Excellent information.
A very good video 👍🏻. Nice job.
❤😎🙏
I cant wait foe this event.....ive been fitting out a system and trailer for just such an event....currently working on a pprtable ham setup complete with a mesh network including cameras amongst othee things. Cant wait to test it all out.
love to see a video tour of it. Im considering building a comms trailer myself. If and when I do plan on filming a tour myself.
Thank you. Based on your idea, I will operate from my class C RV in my yard (10 acres). I will use solar power as much as possible and the Onan 4KW gen as needed. Next year it may be my station in the house, but using the RV can teach me more for this year. Much thanks to those making this happen!
The simulated scenario sounds like what will actually happen soon.
internet cables have been "accidentally " cut to Taiwan over 27 times in the last few years. Hmm could it be CHINA>>>>>>>
At 11:31 in your video some misinformation occurred. Correctly stated 160M, 80M, 40M are LSB For Voice, The rest of the HF Bands are USB (20M, 17M, 15M, 12M, 10M). USB For digital modes is correct.
You're absolutely right. I had the 40m and 80m bands in mind as they are what we use for our rolling regional nets. Thanks for the additional info!
Unless you live in the UK, when did anyone ever need a license to receive ?
Some folks don't even try because they're "not licensed." It helps some folks to be reminded.
First, 5 stars on this video. Well done, BZ, 73s, atta boy, ad nauseum. Looking forward to fldigi - I've never had much luck with it. Later!
Great video! I don’t think people understand that shortwave = HF & your baofeng can’t listen to it.seems obvious to radio people but it’s not to new people
I’m glad y’all are finally reaching out to non-HAMs, and trying to make things accessible to them. I think y’all probably have S2 Underground to thank for the increased interest in receiving HF net traffic
SDR = Software Defined Radio

Absolutely awesome thanks for this. While I’m trying to play Radio with you guys, this will allow me to spread the gospel.
I’m not relying on the Government for Anything. They are Not our Friends. They want 100% Control & I don’t want or need Anything from them.👎🏻
Actually not. I am ret. military working as an officer in a "6 shop." Currently, both the Army and Navy/Marines have put expanding their HF network as a priority; there have been 2 articles in "Proceedings" on that subject over the past 2 years. The USAF and USCG already have substantive HF infrastructure which is tasked daily. HF does not require excess infrastructure ? Gee, have you ever visited a military COMMSTA? The stateside/shoreside facilities require hundreds of acres. I have an "old school" appreciation for HF but SATCOM, from a tactical standpoint, is a tough act to follow. Yep, and I know the Chinese did not smoke their weather satellite out of the sky a few years ago 'cause they thought there were too many weather birds up. If real badness breaks out, satellites are prime targets.
Sounds like you agree with the content of the video, for all the right reasons. 💯
@@amrron2689 Well agreed. Been following AMrron for a number of years and IMHO, the organization exists "for all the right reasons." Wish I could hear your HF Nets here on ECNA. Military reserve it'll be 20 yrs, 04/2024. I'd send you the links from Proceedings but suspect that TH-cam would remove the text. Too bad, it's very interesting reading. Do a search here on TH-cam, subject: "What Is The Ham Radio ADVENTURE Frequency?" Quite interesting.
Ummm No. You missed one. Even if you can't make a contact on HF you can still hear broadcasts and get information.
Nothing will beat true RF communications.
No because I have a ham radio but not a sat phone.
Why 146.420 and not 146.520?
