Great interview. I had my bedroom walls plastered with nothing but RJ pictures. In 1986 in Maggiora Italy I got to meet him and had a nice conversation with him.Rj is and will be my all time favorite rider.

My brothers 1976 Honda cr 125 had made 13.5 inches of travel in 1976 and my 1979 rm 80 had 8.5 in the front and 11 inches in the back my brother Kelly really new how to modify are bikes back in the day plus Now he has invented and patient the cross lock that locks and transporting bikes with out tie downs in 2003 and made it back then to the Sema show . To this day . We still are involved with motocross.

When Marty talks of the tracks unsafe and hurt many riders, he was totally correct. But remember he is talking about ~20 yrs ago... Today, the sx tracks are much much safe, easier, groomed, and you do not see so many top riders hurt now, in the 2020s...

Being 65 years old, seeing Bob's rise, and now hearing him talk about what was really happening in the sport, I say Bob Hannah is a genius not only in the most difficult sport ever devised by man but in human nature. His deference to Roger Decoster as being the gold standard is an accurate assessment of the sport. A failed knee reconstruction in the late 70s ended my pursuit of going pro, and I am grateful this happened. He made a slight comment about how the initial track builders were making doubles and triples with ever-varying distances and steep landings where you had to tread the needle and often flat landing, taking forces into our bodies that were beyond brutal. It is my opinion that those years of the 80s and 90s were the most brutal and dangerous times for our sport. This was the peak of difficulty and danger within our sport.

I was lucky enough to attend the Yamaha training session they offered with RJ as the trainer. It was a phenomenal experience and was a time to never be duplicated again. I can't believe any rider would turn down his offer of help . Truly unfortunate IMHO how the sport today has lost some of its heritage, in large part from the loss of AMA control/management, changes to the sanctioning body, and stupid rules that allowed such displacement advantage to the 4 strokes which was never updated to match the technology as it developed to shrink the displacement advantage to even up the HP advantage.

When I was a kid in the early 70's I remember watching Decoster and Wolsink and Mikola etc. racing Carlsbad on ABC wide world of sports. It was maybe 1973 or 74. I knew at that moment I had to do that. It took me a while because I had to get old enough to work and buy my pickup and my bikes and stuff but eventually I became a local MX racer. I rode Suzuki because that's what Roger rode. Guys like Decoster and Hannah and Smith were my hero's. I was not good but I had fun. Having fun was my motivation. Then I quit for 18 years. Wife, home, etc. When I came back in my 40's all the two strokes had been replaced by four strokes. I was racing Hondas. First a 250F and then a 450F. I had fun but my bones became more brittle and breaking when I crashed. Now I am partially crippled in my right shoulder and I had to quit again but they were the best years of my life. I never had more fun doing anything else and now in my 60's I never will. Motocross can literally kill you. A good friend of my broke his neck at the track and died there in front of his wife and son. But he would rather be dead (a Christian) then paralyzed. Only people who have lined up at the gate and raced motos understand the love of it. It's like a drug addiction but everyone is going to the hospital no matter how good you are. If you don't take yourself out then someone else will.

I stopped riding MX for 12 years. My buddy "tricked" me into buying his old bike saying lets ride (he had a new one and old one) . It felt so good to be back on the bike and the track again, a bit scary at first but felt like my soul returned.

Really appreciated his thoughts on just riding being good for the body & soul. Couldn't agree more.
