Tenkara on the Trail
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 พ.ย. 2021
My name is Kris and I would like to welcome you to TENKARA ON THE TRAIL! I am passionate about fly fishing for trout in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in Southern Montana!
I spend most of the summer on solo backpacking trips, deep in the 944,000 acre wilderness trying to reach as many of the 300+ fishable lakes as I can. Along the way, I fly fish the countless streams, rivers, creeks and lakes for numerous trout species: brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, and golden trout.

Nice summary of excellent remaining rods for sale. Bet they sell fast as these are significantly discounted way below retail prices. Viewers will see if they check for themselves.
Nice NEW Wasatch pocket rod introduction.
Thanks Vic…probably not a rod you’ll need for your collection🤷♂️
Looks like an interesting rod.
Definitely unique
Very cool rod, I wonder what it will be priced at, unless I missed it mentioned in the video.
You didn’t miss it…I’m not sure on the price.
@@tenkaraonthetrail Thanks, that cloud of thought went over my head thinking of where I could use it, instead of paying better attention 😊
Well, you have a week to contemplate before the preorder happens. 🤷♂️
Payton and Kelly had us pa guys in creeks where this would definitely be useful. We used Darth Quatro and Baby in them and felt we needed something smaller in spots. I also have spots here in Pa that are very brushy/ hard to get into. I'll be ordering one myself.
Excellent. Thanks for insights.
@@Al-jv6mh those native Utah Yellowstone Cutts are in a world of their own 😂
I feel owning the Quattro already mitigates my need for this rod. I love WTR but I don’t feel particularly excited about this one. On the flip side the colors are premium. Love that.
I don’t know if I need to go shorter than the Quattro either but time will tell.
Appreciate the video Kris, however that particular rod is not for me.
It’s a specialty rod for sure. Like I said in the video, the folks that need this rod know who they are😂
@@tenkaraonthetrail LOL - Agree 100%
I want one already! I have 5 of their rods and they all rock!!
That reminds me, I need to put my discount link in the description!
❤ Thank ya!!
Great summary of the different Dragontail rod offerings. I have 3 of the models you reviewed and your summary was spot on. Thanks Kris
Awesome, thanks!
Mizuchi was my first, lots of small to mid water around me. I did get the two softer sections for it. Foxfire was next, very fun on those same waters. Recently got a Ragnarok, nothing caught on it yet, but look forward to the new year and making it happen. Very pleased with Dragontail across the board. Thanks for the in depth information.
Thanks, more I use them the more I like them as well
Excellent truncated synopsis. 100% of the Variance explained across the Full Line of Dragontail Tenkara rod models. Nice work Kris.
Wow, this is perfect timing! I just watched your video from 2 years ago on this subject yesterday. I appreciate the update! I have a Kaida and a Mizuchi and I'm debating between the Hellbender, Icewing, and Ragnarok for my 3rd rod to handle bigger fish from the river or mountain lakes as you mentioned. I want a 13 footer! Which of the 3 would you recommend if you could only have one? I'm assuming the Hellbender from you final comments?
Thanks, it just depends on how big the fish are and how often you are targeting them. The Ragnarok is an excellent Rod but if you are going after 20+ inch fish on a regular basis, the hellbender will give you a little more room for air. The ice wing is in a totally different category.
The Ragnarok is a great all-around Rod for modest fish and big fish on occasion whereas the hellbender is great for the big fish but a little more work and perhaps overkill for smaller fish.
Put it this way , the hellbender is a thirty two penny Rod if I recall correctly whereas the Ragnarok is seventeen
@@tenkaraonthetrail as the Mizuchi is a 16 penny rod, would that be too similar to the Ragnarok? I am still pretty new to Tenkara so I truly appreciate your replies with the insight on the differences. The hellbender sounds like it could be great for bass and maybe even pike?
That’s a good question, just because the penny rating is similar, those are very different rods due to the length and flex profile. The mizuchi is much shorter and lighter and will feel much stiffer than the Ragnarok. Yes, the hellbender is ideal for warm water species like bass
Nice video thank you. I'd like to see a new Dragontail non-zoom premium 330 or 360 length similar to a Fujiryu 6:4 in action. I find soft to very soft rods nice to cast, however not great "fishing" tools. The Kokoro in different lengths and actions would be nice to see.
The kokoro kind of fits the 360 range doesn’t it? It’s in between the Fujiryu 5:5 & 6:4 penny rating and casts beautifully and effortlessly. Are you saying you want it to be stiffer like the 6:4 or softer like the 5:5? They are going to make a new length each year, so maybe it will be a shorter one in ‘25.
@@tenkaraonthetrail Stiffer like the 6:4 or on the lighter side of 7:3. I find even with smaller fish a stiffer rod lets me feel the fish more, and it allows me to manage fish better. I've found soft rods don't let me feel the small fish as much as most people say they do. The rods bend takes the feel out of the fight, until it bends far enough to where it has some backbone.
@michaelcapurso got it. Thanks.
If I may ask, who made those rod racks?
I did
Nice Sawanobori action and wonderful to see the effective Partridge & Olive Wet fly straight off the vise!!! Beautiful day on the water. 11:10 The Surveyor variant with Orange Hot spot caught 'Bow !!! WOW!!! Thank you Kris.
Thanks Vic
I tried to order a Sawanobori to go along with my Kurenai Long and found out Suntech has stopped making the GM Keiryu Sawanobori 53 rods. They will have new version rod Sawanobori 2H 52F out this spring.
That’s good to know! I’m sure they will be excellent.
Nice
Thanks
what kind of line were you using here? thanks.
I discussed that in part 1….15’ level line….#3.5 orange with a few feet of #3.0 green.
@@tenkaraonthetrailhave you experimented with the cortland tricolor sighters? i’ve found the one with black transitions between green and pink to be fairly visible in most lighting conditions
@mvsc-k5e I have used them… when I used to make euro leaders.
I don't know where you are, but I do love the way the water looks. There are no trout near me (Ann Arbor, Mi.), but i have smallmouth water that looks similar. I can fish for smallies all day, and I do. Love them. One day I hope to get on some trout water like this to test my skills. Thanks much. I like the size of that fly.
Thank you
Oh, well. I enjoyed the video, and I greatly appreciate, as a former documentary film-maker, that you are aware of not jerking your head all over the place while wearing, what I guess is a go-pro. thank you.
I actually keep it on my chest most of the time but sometimes it’s angled a little too high when I’m wearing waders because of the magnetic device I use. Also sometimes I’m fishing in one direction but my body is pointing in the other so I don’t capture things. Pros and cons to it all I guess
Do you have footage of fishing this area in late spring through summer so we could see how it looks in full foliage?
I don’t think I do. Usually I only fish there when I can’t hike into the high country.
Try this one. KOKORO & bigger fish! th-cam.com/video/ewgugX893Qk/w-d-xo.html
Nice update, Kris! I'd happily fish any "cast off" flies you might have!
I'm planning on fishing with you this year, either here in WY/ID, there in MT or in WI. If I can walk, then I will fish 😀.
Awesome, I’m looking forward to it!
Retirement is terrible 😂😂😂😂 there’s a Project Healing Waters in the western part of my state also , that would be a great and rewarding commitment . They seem to only do rod and reel fishing from their posts. I don’t know how you’re fitting everything into your schedule , seems like your cup is almost overflowing.
Haha. Good problem to have. 👍
@ I’ve got 9 yrs of boredom 😂😂
you must be bored if you’re sitting around watching my videos 😂
@@tenkaraonthetrail 😂😂😂
The discipline, organizational skills and developed short and long term goals since retirement is impressive. Offering viewers an example of healthy post retirement adaptation. Thank you for sharing your 2025 itinerary . Well earned and to promised rewarding times ahead Sir.
Thanks Vic…get out and fish those travelers!
Looking forward to your 2025 videos, especially your talks and reviews mixed in with fishing.
Thanks Michael!
My DARTH QUATTRO 6:4 came in today really love the quality of this rod. Thanks for your review.
Excellent! I saw your FB post. I wonder how different it is from my 5:5…
Hard to say unless you can do a side by side comparison, but the 6:4 tip has good flex. Hopefully I get some time this weekend to check it out.
Finally, a left-handed rod for my small dolphin fishing. Can't wait.
😂
Thanks for sharimg
You bet, more to come.
Wow! A Tenkara Specialist under a Judges' court ordered Subpoena, sworn under Oath during a Legal Deposition taking "The 5th Amendment" protecting attorney/client Privilege at the risk of facing jail time. A Secret could not be better kept. Bravo!!!
My military clearance has expired but I can still keep my mouth shut
Looking forward to more info, and hopefully not another zoom rod. I like my Quattro however all the zoom lengths are definitely not necessary, for me it's a fun light 8' 6" rod.
I hear you, I tend to use the e Quattro at the opposite lengths as well. Fortunately the extra lengths don’t negatively affect the weight/balance/feel for the Quattro.
Superbe avec un cadre magnifique 🙏👍
Thank you!
Last day of 2024 and I purchased The DARTH QUATTRO 6.4, thanks for the discount code.
Awesome, enjoy!
Thanks Happy New Years!!
You too, enjoy it!
Nice video!! I just bought the Kokoro for trout fishing in the Iowa Driftless Area. I hope it works well for me.
You’ll love it.
Whose waterproof gloves are you liking? Or are you just using nitriles?
I use the blue ones from rock fish that Tom Davis has reviewed.
Great video
Thanks!
Gonna plagiarize Dr.Tom, "Beautiful stream!" (Ditto) . However the Baby Tenryu stole the show. Nice
Thanks Vic. Super fun rod.
Beautiful stream!
Thanks Tom!
BlueBird Sky, sunny day, Sawanobori 53 river to himself and good trout action. Thats a good day!
Really nice rod, however I could not get past the swing weight and sold it. I've found over the years 400cm is my max.
Understandable. Despite being very light, 5.3m is long for one handed use, but I’m used to it. I fished one-handed for nearly 6 hours that day and never fatigued. I have fished a couple 4.5m rods that were more tiring for me. I do use two hands when fighting fish as you saw. It does make a 4m rod feel like a toy though😂.
The Terrific Baby Tenryu event: Hallmark standout scenes : 6:29&6:48 the now infamous tire/wheel pool (having 1st appeared on episode TENRYU TF32TA -PART 2 @ 0:49) 11:15 casted, hooked, and flung release exposition 12:32 the stalking Heron posture and catching its prey 12:34 best recorded baby Tenryu rod flex during a tenkara fight to date. Permission to make an analogy : This 7 day back country Tenkara trip's last day trout action parallels a 4th of July fireworks show. As it delivered on a classic last Act: THE SHOWCASE GRAND FINALE EVENT. Final point, resisting the impulse to tally a final trout count, viewers take solace concluding "the Tenkara on The Trail tandem baby Tenryu Tag Team" (that's a Furaibo mouthful) absolutely vacuumed the creek with innumerous numbers of delightful Rainbow results, LOL. Bravo Kris!!
Thanks Vic!
Thank you for the information! I have a 20’ rod but find the premade owner rigs are too short, but as mentioned lengthening tippet only forces you to fish deeper. I wish it were a bit easier to find yarn marker spools instead of buying precut ones, and the winder box looks excellent! At best I fit 3 foam spools per pocket in my vests or packs.
Yeah, I bought the yarn marker spools from Tenkarabum back when he carried them. I don’t use them often so they should last me a lifetime.
@ Whoa! Thank you for the quick reply! It’s a shame the right yarn is difficult to track down now. I’ve found pretied markers state-side but am hesitant to pay that price for less than half of what comes on the Owner precut marker cards. Unfortunately I’ve lost entire lines before after fish shake the hook and the rod tip launches the rig into trees so it’s time for me to look into making my own lines.
If you ever purchase something from Tenkara -ya, I’m sure he could also procure yarn spools.
Come to think of it, perhaps check with Keiryu rod company…maybe they can obtain some.
Great job Kris. Nothing like winter nymphing and 2 nymph rigs :). Also, it appears this rod is no longer available but will be replaced by something new in 2025, so we'll be keepig eye on that. Tight Lines!
Thanks, much appreciated!
awesome video!
Thanks!
@ I really like the flies you’ve tied on instagram; how long have you been tying? and what kind of silk do you use?
@mvsc-k5e I’ve tied a lot over the last 10-15 years, but I started well before that. The silk I’ve been using lately is TIRE.
@ thank you. I did send you a message on IG if you have a moment
@mvsc-k5e cool, I’ll take a look
Shakin' off the early almost Winter "gottsta Tenkara fish Blues"? Wonder if that Beautiful last Rainbow caught was bigger than the one that got away? Very generous advice given regarding the Sawanobori 53 Keiryu rod rigged up for Tenkara angling, viewers should be grateful as this is rare disclosure, and not content seen on other Tenkara TH-cam channels. LOL, you are quite the scoundrel having alluded to yet did not reveal the mystery revelation (hinted could risk being hit by lightning) . Where was the Grand entrance of the Sawanobori 63, both perhaps next episode? VIEWERS STAY TUNED!!! Thank you Kris, nice .
Thanks Vic
can this rod still be bought anywhere?
It is made by suntech. I got mine from Tenkarabum but he’s retired. You would have to check either through Tenkara ya or perhaps a proxy. I don’t know if that particular model is still in production but suntech makes other great Keiryu rods as well as Nissin. Keiryu rod company carries a couple Japanese Keiryu rods too.
Hi @mvsc-k5e, I actually have an unused Sawanabori 53 I would be willing to sell. When I got mine I had been on the waiting list for 10 months, so I picked up a spare just in case. After 2 seasons of using the first one, I am pretty sure I don't need the spare. Just reply to this if interested, maybe we can exchange emails.
