What is RTABC?
RTABC stands for "Real-Time A Button Challenge". It is a challenge for primarily Super Mario 64 where players must complete an objective with as few A presses as possible in real time. Any method of savestating, emulator slow down, frame advance, memory editors/viewers, are banned. It's like TAS but without the tools and done by one person.
If you're interested in taking a game and completely breaking it with a bunch of weird glitches and tricks, this challenge will interest you.

SMGS - Super Mario Green Stars
This is done on version 3.3, which allows you to rollout of slidekick with B instead of A. Rolling out of slidekick on a steep slope puts mario in jump dive instead of rollout, because the game sees it as a steep jump and a B press on the same frame. The sloped sections of the minecart wheels are steep slopes, so by slidekicking in a way where we can rollout on the slope, we can start a jump dive. This jump dive can get us on top of the minecart, and then you can use another jump dive to enter the pipe, all without the A button because who ever made this version is stupid.
This saves 6 A presses, bringing the total from 495 to 489.

Summun released a demo for hack they want to make in the future, and some people in the rtabc server have been speedrunning it. Blobfish had a 3:32 for a while, and I finally got a 3:31. The 100c was extremely sloppy because I missed the secret and couldn't find it, so I had to compensate by missing a lot of coins. that was crazy impressive! the skill that sorta things takes is nuts - i like when you're trying to clip through that wall with the box placement/running up ramp to get the bob-omb to chase you through it, but you see it's not really working out, so you had a little alternate path blowing up a wall from up a pole onto a higher platform. really creative and interesting challenge for level design, and play to boot!
that section wasn't an alternate path, that was the intended solution. the game keeps track of a coordinate called the Held Object's Last Position (HOLP). when you release an object, the object is not released from marios hands, but instead from the HOLP, which is usually in marios hands. however, we can disjoint the HOLP from marios hands using a wide variety of glitches. however, most of these glitches (like hat in hand and behind camera anywhere) are patched in mario builder 64. luckily, instant release still works. here's a step by step process of what you do in this section. first, you set the HOLP with the corkbox on the red block. if you manage to throw an object without updating the HOLP to marios hands, the object will appear from the red block instead. then, you go up the ramp and stand in the bombs home point to make it walk into the wall. then you have to dive at the bomb, and bonk on the wall on the same frame. mario picks up and drops the bomb on the same frame, which is too fast for the HOLP to update. this is called "instant release". so, the bomb goes to the HOLP, as expected. but because mario bonked with the bomb, the game sees it as a drop. drops are handled differently from throws, in that instead of being released at the HOLP, drops are released at the HOLPs lateral position but with marios current height. the height of the bomb platform lines up with the top of the pole, so the bomb goes there. another side effect of instant release is that the bombs fuse doesnt start. so now we have an unlit bomb at the pole platform, which wasn't there before. the bomb needed to be moved over to the pole to break the wall, and I had to do everything in the video because the bomb was never at the pole to begin with. if you want more information, pannenkoek made a video about instant release (th-cam.com/video/CDPZK9P2ibg/w-d-xo.html). sorry for the big wall of text, and i'm glad you enjoyed the level!

the game checks the normal vector to see if a triangle should be a wall, floor, or ceiling. if you don't know what a normal vector is, imagine an arrow pointing away from the triangle at a perfect 90 degree angle. if this arrow points up, the triangle is a floor. down, ceiling. neither, wall. except the degrees that it uses for walls is extremely small, so unless a wall is perfectly 90 degrees then it's usually a floor or ceiling. the tilt of the ship was enough to tilt that wall into a ceiling, which i happened to be pushing against when it was a wall. the ceiling also kinda pushed down on mario, so i got squished until the boats tilt let me go

this is a type of glg (glitchy ledge grab) referred to as a "wrong floor glg". the entire concept behind glgs is that you trigger a ledge grab check, which is where the game checks if youre able to grab a ledge (this is started by having a wall touching mario's lower half but not his upper half), and then looks for a floor to grab. during this process, it references the higher corkbox floor instead of the lower one because you enter a misalignment in the corkbox, where the floor extends 1 unit further than the walls of the box. the lower corkbox triggers the ledge grab check, and then the game references the upper corkboxes floor, so mario grabs there

it looks like one of the 5 coins had nearly no horizontal speed and landed on top of the pole, then i got far enough away that the pole lost its tangibility and the coin fell through. usually it would be pushed out by the walls but it wasn't for some reason
