FASD Dogs, with Jodee Kulp & Donnie Winokur
The podcast hiatus is almost over: we have a new home and the movers come in 2 weeks! Meanwhile, enjoy this rebroadcast of a very popular episode!
In this heartwarming and educational episode of Living with FASD, host Patti Kasper is joined by two remarkable guests, Jodee Kulp and Donnie Winokur, to explore the transformative impact of FASD service dogs. Donnie, the parent of the first child to receive an FASD service dog, shares her family's touching journey, from the challenges of raising a child with FASD to the incredible support and companionship provided by their service dog.
Listeners will be treated to an in-depth discussion about the comprehensive training these dogs undergo, the profound connection they share with their handlers, and the life-changing benefits they bring to families affected by FASD. The episode delves into the nuances of service dog assistance, from sensory regulation and emotional support to practical interventions like tracking and preventing elopement.
Jodee Kulp, an expert in the field, illuminates the process of training and matching service dogs with children and adults with FASD, emphasizing the significance of building trust and understanding the unique needs of each individual. The conversation also touches on the financial aspects and community involvement in acquiring a service dog, offering valuable insights and advice for those considering this path.
Don't miss the inspiring stories, laughter, and a few surprising moments that highlight the incredible bond between service dogs and their handlers. Whether you're a parent, caregiver, or individual living with FASD, this episode is sure to open your eyes to the potential of service dogs as a life-enhancing tool.

    I’m so glad I came across this podcast. I am living with fasd as well. I would love to have a conversation with you about my life growing up as a child and now. You are absolutely right about the lack of information that’s out there. I was born in 1975 and adopted to a wonderful family that traveled the world. But they had no idea the child that they adopted would struggle with FASD. I have managed to graduate high school and go on to become a licensed massage therapist.

    We don’t reach people through information; we engage them through emotional resonance. When we bury them in data they get overwhelmed, shut down and avoid. I appreciate Dr Rich and her passion, her student, and would urge shorter emotionally social stories as the way to have bite sized progress with policy makers! We fight smarter, not harder, and touching the heart with the pain and the steps that help provide modelling so others can step up too, in their own ways.

    It is entirely common to discover that the further one goes into one’s specialty the less people there who are experts know about other types of brain syndromes. It’s surprising but common. It is unfortunate, however, in that there can be wonderful techniques which emerge and can be adapted given what circuitry/systems are involved. This is a compelling interview.

    What a sterling conversation….! I would give anything to share with a beloved person but because of the diagnostic term, I cannot make it available to them. I am just so glad others will hear you both and broaden their minds and actions to improve mutual respect around neurodivergence.

  • @Antoniathinks
    @Antoniathinks 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Biting my tongue on your behalf. And yes, fawning is painful. And then there we go neurological drives intensity of trauma reflexes. The coping/cower/covering appeasing, is tenuous. Responsibility to fix things I break, to keep track going forward as best one can, and where does the reciprocity underlying social rhythm land? I love what plan A and plan B can offer, Patti. I like that “no more name calling” as in yes, no character assassination. Aggressiveness was unwarranted. Where there is education there is the opportunity for change!!! What a GREAT conversation between two wonderful minds/hearts. Can’t wait to learn more about persistent demand avoidance. That is REAL. But this is everything: it is not personal. The $10,000 incentive is the novelty button that kicks the chain of dopamine into action. It is about the amount of the brain which gets recruited thus causes the fatigue crash after the task!
