These 1-48 twist shoot maxi ball better. They will shoot RBs but with 2f at around 65 grs.
I purchased a Thompson 36 cal about a year ago. My favorite gun to go to the range. Tons of fun to shoot. With the velocities you are getting, would this be an ethical gun to deer hunt with? I do not have a chronograph, what would be the velocity with a 30 grain load pushing a maxi ball?
Congrats, I love my tc seneca 36s great guns , I do have the 36 maxi mould and have shot it a bunch , ethical is hard to say I leave that to you , I do know I have shot rbs in one of my videos with 70 grns of 3f out of the traditions and its screaming fast more than a 22 mag probably closer to 223 or 22 250 not in speed but in power. Many folks say the 36 is like a hot 22 mag , at say 40-50 grns with the maxi and closer distances sub 50 yards I don't believe there would be any issue using a maxi 36 with a nice heart or double lung shot. My go too load for my 50 cals and deer is 60 gr 2 or 3f, and for 52 and 54 and 62 I use 60 grn - 80 grn, what many consider light, the 60 grn blows through the light skined deer. So if its legal in your state and you get the accuracy luke I do in mine I say go for it at bow type distances and maybe out to 50. I loaned my uncle my chronograph but I'll try to get some data once I get it back
@@redeagletrapping Thank you for your response. My 50 cal Renegade groups 3 inches at 50 yards with a 60 grain load of Schuetzen. I was hoping to use the 36 on whitetails, limiting the shot to 30 yards, where it groups 1 1/2 ".
People my age are dropping like Flies and their family's just want money so they Hock the fire Arm's at a pawn shop for $26.50 or have a small gun store sell them for a fair price last year I seen one for $250.00. Yeah Ox Yoke patche's are great,.... but I get pillow ticking at walmart and use Thonpson Centers Bore Butter for patches. 65 grains of FFFand a round ball,.... and see pillow Ticking is thicker. Old guys die all the time look at tiny gun stores and get one for $100-$200.
In like 1982 I paid $250.00 for my New Englander at K-Mart.
Well, 1 in 48 in a Thompson Center will get you 1 hole at 50 yards and clover leafs at 100 yards with 65 grain's of FFFG Black Powder. and a round ball and the same with a plastic Sabot and a pistol bullet. And technically I have never seen them shoot anything bad UNLESS YOUR USING FAKE POWDER AND YOUR BORE HAS BEEN COMPROMISED BY FAKE POWDER TURNING TO CEMENT AND RUSTING OUT THE BARREL. However a Thompson Center Black Diamond Extended Range? Only shoot's one load accurately? Hell I can't remember all I can tell you is I tried everything and it shot all over the place. My brother sent it back they told him what load to shoot and yup it shot great with that load? Nope a T/C of all the other Types shoot just fine,...Hawken, New Englander, wasn't there a White Mountain Carbine those are the one's I'd stick with Oh, yeah Thompson Center is back in business. On You Tube in the search bar type in Thompson Center and that's their channel.
I have to comment on your shooting ability. I urge everyone who watches this video to watch carefully when he shoots. His cheek does not leave the stock. That my friends is called follow through. There is one way to master this that I have used. I take aim at a target 15 yards away, I then close my eyes and squeeze off a shot. After the shot (it does not matter if you hit the target) you should have your eyes on the sight. If you are not on the sights it means that you lifted your head. It takes practice and concentration to do this but once your muscle memory is solid your shooting will improve 100%.
You're casting and shooting brass round balls?
nope lead balls
@@redeagletrapping Please listen to your commentary @4:27. Sometimes we misspeak when videoing, it's hard sometimes, but I just wanted to be sure of what you were saying vs what you meant.
Are these guns smoth bore or rifled ? Montana we have to use traditional and I'm not sure what all that intails ?
I would guess without reading Montana regs that by traditional you can use either smoothbore or rifled as long as you use iron sights and percussion sidelock or flintlock , thompson center made these in smooth and rifled , the 56 cal sb is the smoothbore barrel, the hawken models came in the rifled barrels in either 45 , 50 or 54 cal , they made a renegade as well that is traditional but used a shotgun style stock in 45 50 and 54. So these usually fall in the primative or traditional category , I would stick to 50 or 54 for Montana game. I prefer the hawken model with the crescent butt and 2 triggers makes a nicer setup. Thompson is going to release these again with rumors of a 202t release however pricing will probably be higher than the old models can be had for.
So Hawken bros figured out the 1:48 twist with paper and pencil 150 years ago and they have yet to be proven wrong. Interesting.
I have my Great Grandmother's model 11. Purchased in 1925 and also have the receipt from the old town mercantile (in pencil). It now has the mantle adapter in it, I looked everywhere for the past years to find originals, no luck. Fantastic video all around, ironically your lighting was a little low to show detail on parts. I'm sure you know much more now about your 11 than when this was made. A version 2 or part 2 would be great. Info like this is not for everyone, but those of us that love these lamps consider information like this nothing short of treasure. Thanks for you time and work to make it.
The lock and stock look original. The barrel is not... these were made in .50 Caliber with a 39 inch barrel, the rear site doesn't quite match the profile of the originals either. The hammer should be a goose neck shape, i dont belueve they used the double supported hammer on these. There was an earlier model also made in .45 Caliber with a 46 inch long barrel. The patch box on these models is quite unique, it's still a great find!
Had a opportunity to get a stainless CvA optima a few years ago and believe me There is nothing primitive about that rifle at all I shoot 100 grain pellets 2x50 and 385 solid soft lead hollow point and at 75 yards it makes cloverleaf all day long I’m a Hawken man at heart (40 years) But I’m not able to see the iron sights like I used to be able to So if you can get a CVA they all use the same barrel as far as I can tell in the cheaper ones W mart sells and the Stainless ones have a different barrel
I'm new at this and have just purchased my first muzzloader. It is a .50 cal., and I am going to try .015 patches to start, with a .50 cal. ball from Hornady. I am going to use the ox yoke patches. Did I miss it in the video? When you switched patches and went to the ox yoke's, did you stick with the .010's, or go to .015? Thanks.
My go to is the ox yoke .015th patches and the .490 round ball my load is 60 gr 2f and for my woods on ne deer that punches holes both sides and puts em down 80 yards and in. I rarely use the .010 only have 1 gun that shoots well with them. Congrats on the 50 and hope you enjoy it. 😊
Um, yes the gov is going to hell, but your right barrel is open bore, your left barrel on it is modified choke. Of course your right barrel being just straight cylinder bore is gonna be really wide spread. I know the weapon. Your barrels seem short. Should have been 28". But, try Pyrodex RS, Equivalent to ffG, starting grain 74, for small birds, 80 for turkey, equal load powder to same of #7.5-8shot. Screw buying those expensive Nitro cards bro. 18 bucks buys a 3/4 inch hole punch set and knock out cereal, beer, pizza boxes and use 2-3 over your powder. Then put your cushion wad in which you can split in half. Add shot, cap it off with yet another one of those free pieces of your cereal box, hopefully Wheaties. Every navy shoots different. I know. Old man, homesteader, but ya gotta know that right barrel is gonna be wider. Ya gotta have that cushion wad though, you can get 500 of them from Midway for 12 bucks, then cut them in half. Some people prefer lubing them. Again cheap answer. Vegetable oil, but that's if you're gonna hunt soon, cause oil can drip down into your powder. If you're gonna store it loaded, use either some bee's wax on the cushion, or leave it dry. Love the shotgun, but that barrel length leads me to believe it was shortened.
What brand of powder are you using
Over several decades, I have switched from pillow ticking .015" and a .530 round ball to approximately the same patch thickness only in linen. Linen won't burn through with heavier loads as for hunting.
Cleaner burn with a little less fouling using 3Fg.
You're right! Those velocities are far too low for a 4" barrel. SAAMI sets a velocity of 1220 fps for 158 grains 357 mag at 15 ft. from the muzzle out of a 4" test barrel (or 1600 fps out of a 10" solid test barrel). For comparison, I'm getting 992 fps out of my RIA AL3.1 that only has a 2" barrel with the same ammo (except that mine are FMJ). Would love to see you shoot a different batch of the same ammo or a different brand of ammo altogether, with the same specs. I hope it's not the gun! Great video, very useful info!
The complete Black Powder Handbook by Sam Fadala .👍
And eye protection for your raccoon mate ..... very considerate of you 👍 😁 You mentioned gunbroker , i would love to come across " at a good price " an early Hatfield 36 cal fullstock Flintlock or cap lock .. such beautiful rifles with the curly maple stock ❤
Thanks always about saftey lol
If I'm using pyrodex I don't have any black powder for the pan and ignition is questionable. That's why I have one caplock for hunting.
@davidbeasley2853 definitely pyrodex is really to high a flash point , duplex or kicker charges will work in the barrel but to ignite in the pan you really need the black. Cap locks definitely make it easier for hunting
I hope the the original author of this video can receive these messages still. My question is or for anyone else who might know the answer to my question is, what size CAPS or number should I use for my 36 Cal Italian rifle I have all the other information for my rifle except the caps. Thank you very much
@jamesvasquez6280 cap size on Italians is usually number 11 , rws 1075 work as well. Any number 11 should work , Italian nipples are metric and if you can't find the proper size you can switch out nipples easily to a different one just order the metric thread pattern and your good to go
Very nice, love to have one like that.
That's called the "flame spreader' that fits down into the center-draft tube on the assembled burner. in my experience, don't buy one of those oldies (older than a Model B) without one, because you might have a hard time finding the early flame spreaders that will fit right. The part that your mantle fits on and your chimney fits into is called the gallery. I just got a complete Model 6 going yesterday. They aren't that different from the 11's.
As I mentioned on another channel the Seneca is the best small game rifle ever made. I hope the new TC arms brings it back.
The Cherokee as well, .32,.36, and maybe custom...ie a.38 using hbwc pistol bullets
Also i own a golok blade now too. Can't wait for the chandong one to arrive
The cat says "i don't need no machete. i have these C L A W S"

Hello im new to your channel I have a couple model #11 Aladdin lamp made in USA Chicago Ill I cleaned it up and it’s shinning beautifully but I’m wondering if you could help me with what they’d be worth it has the all the stuff that your showing
Based on your results here, I'd have to agree with the general wisdom in one respect: Pyrodex sucks for priming and isn't preferred for the barrel charge. Black in the pan makes Pyrodex almost acceptable in the barrel, though. I've shot enough Pyrodex in my cap and ball revolver (and had a BP muzzleloading pistol back in college) to know that Pyrodex is acceptable in cap- or primer-ignited guns -- and as you note, it makes very little difference in cleaning between black and Pyrodex. Sadly, we'll probably never have a substitute that works really well in flinters, because if it's as easy to ignite as black, it'll get DOT classified as an Explosive and BATFE will require a magazine for any point of sale that keeps even a single can overnight (which isn't going to happen for local gun shops, not since the 1970s). For flintlock shooters who live in the country, homemade black seems like a good solution; for those who live in any kind of town, however, that's not going to fly -- and we may have to just live with hazmat shipping costs to get Swiss or Goex from online sellers.
The first thing I do to Pedersoli touch hole liners is drill to 1/16 inch. Also I reknap my flint on the first misfire!

GREAT INFO REGARDING GUN BROKER BIDDING THANKS. I BID WHAT I WANT TO PAY PLUS POSTAGE THANKS
Very well said! 👍
stop hammering your microphone
I ran across your video I have a traditions Kentucky long rifle with an l and R lock on it. Eleanor locks are junk and that's the fact, if you won't quality. Do like I did sell the gun for what you can get out of it and go with Jim Keebler. Long raffles, trust me, you won't regret it Everything is made here in the United States of ayeah, and you'll be amazed how the parts fit together.
If You're going to shoot , at least use a split screen shot w/target . ( Or better yet just show the target )
Clean up,your garbage, dump target range.......old mountain, boys always tried to retrieve their lead. .......show some love for the environment
If I don't are you gonna send me to my room? In all seriousness if you watch my videos you'll see the targets change the papers in front and the backers change. I clean my range all the time , I also cleaned all the crap off the property from loggers, neighbors and others , so while your intention is good its unnecessary. I also pull my old lead and recast it thereby reusing my lead. I also average about 200 rds a week on my range of BP so what may lie there in a video is usually not the same the next you see. I also shoot about 5k rifle and pistol a year here so it's used and cleaned. I was taught to respect nature. So maybe don't assume
I would send that gun back and demand my money.
Yeah should have but I addressed this a few years ago it was at the start of covid and kibler did not make a 36,
For one thing, the L and R lock is junk. The inlet for the lock needs to be trimmed out. If you want good quality fit and finish, you get a Jim Keibler, And use nothing but 3F go.Ex are swiss. spend your money wisely. I bought a 45 caliber 44 inch swamp barrel plus a 36 caliber barrel that will fit on the same chassie, extra Ram rod.And finish for $ 1,700 Delivered. Hundred percent made in ohio.
Please check out Kibler Long Rifles in Ohio, outstanding rifles, outstanding accuracy, outstanding ignition, perfect balance with the swamped barrels and outstanding fit and finish. I've built 5 of them, the kits are fantastic to build and are beautiful when finished and I'm no gunsmith or you can get them completely built. I have never had a problem with anything and Jim Kibler and his people are fantastc to deal with.
Yup I've addressed kibler guns he had nothing in 36 back in 2020 and 2021, so that's why I did not use him , his kits are top notch
Impressive rifle!
Thanks
HOT SHOT NIPPLE 80 grains FFF 530 round ball 👍 GREAT ELK RIFLE !!!!
Yes finally someone who gets you don't need monster charges for game. My deer load is 60 gr 3f with hot shot , passthroughs everytime on NE deer. Thanks for the comment
Yep...80 grains fffg Goex, .54 cal prb and Lyman GPR. I’ve knocked down a few mule deer over the years.
I bid on one ( only it was a.32 ) last week . Got out bid though. ( but I did get a c.v.a. .32 scout) , haven't shot it yet .
Nice I still need to get a 32. The cva is nice as well. Rice barrels is making replacement tc barrels now for 32 - 54. Prob is they cost as much as a used tc lol
Take a look at your ejection rod, they can come lose or the tip can become deformed at the lockup point.
Will do I stripped it after the video zero debris inside and springs all good Thanks for the tip
Nice what you did for your neighbor's kid. Try to do that myself on our little farm with some kids from the cities. By profession, I was a school teacher. Back in the 80s our school system use to present hunter safety programs to our 8th graders as a part of our science curriculum. It was a three week course that taught the basics about shooting and hunting safety. At the end of each course we would take the kids out tp a ramge and let them shoot a 22 rifle, a shotgun and a revolver. Department of wildlife game and fisheries would furnish the ammo and we would come up with a few guns. Students, many of whom would never hunt, seemed to enjoy the course. I think, too, that really helped to build a base of support for our 2A rights. It sort of took the fear, awe and mistery away from the shooting sports. Just that experience helped kids to appreciate firearm use. Sadly, those days in school are gone. It now is really up to us to introduce as many young folks to the sport as we can. Thanks for the video and concern. Look forward to more videos.
That's a great story I was fortunate to graduate high school re columbine so we still had archery in schools and teachers who let us leave to go hunt opening day with our guns in our trunks. We need more positives like you in our schools now. Thanks for sharing
Great video. Glad you're doing well. The idiots that know everything are everywhere. I was recently scolded by a muzzleloader keyboard expert that I was lucky I hadn't killed someone by recommending unsafe loads. The load I recommend is from a historic reference and one I've used for 40+ years. Sometimes it just gets too stupid out there on the interwebs forums.
Yup everyone always knows best what's best for everyone else lol
I'm an expert, by God. If you don't believe it just ask me.🙂
Absolutely classic. I can't beat that logic
Actually I’ve been watching the testimony at Alex Baldwins trial. They are “qualifying” experts to testify about that not so accidental discharge. And strutingeagle just articulated that process. Fox out
I was wondering….. glad to see your still up and kicking. Good musings. Like you I’m still puttering around. This cold winter put a bit of a kink in my tail. Nothing I can’t get over. I for one await your spring content. Fox out
Flintlocks for you ,not reliable !!!
