The Chianti Road : European Roadtrip Part 4 through Tuscany, Italy
มุมมอง 2298 หลายเดือนก่อน
One of my favourite roads in the world - the sinuous, smooth, warm and fast Chianti Road that stretches from Florence to Sienna. We take a Jaguar F-Type on a Sunday morning hoon that is a non-stop smile factory through Tuscany into Umbria, Italy. This is part of a series routing us through Germany on the Romantische Strasse, across the Alps into Italy including the Stelvio, the Chianti Road and...

Things start to get easier as we reach the Camel River for these last days of hiking the South West Coast Path for the season. We base ourselves at the Molseworth Arms in Wadebridge, making use of the buses to start walks from Port Isaac (Day 22) and then Polzeath to Padstow (Day 23) across a day and a half.
SWCP Ep.7 Tintagel to Port Isaac
มุมมอง 217ปีที่แล้ว
Reputedly one of the most strenuous sections so we break it down to be a little more manageable! We'd ended our last walk doing a short stretch from Tintagel to Treknow and pick it up again staying overnight at Trebarwith Strand before heading onto Port Gaverne and Port Isaac with a reasonable 7 miler.

In 2021 we joined a Sailing Holidays fleet cruising around Corfu and the Greek Mainland as complete beginners. If you wonder what it's like as a novice Day Skipper aboard a Beneteau 323 then this is for you. It built our confidence to start cruising on our own yacht back in the UK. We experience med mooring, anchoring and dodge a thunderstorm as we are guided around this safe cruising arena.

Hi! Great Vid! Great memories! Can you tell me what the first piece of music is? I've tried Chris Haugen but it's not him! It's on the end of the 2 ladies singing! But I, can't get any further than that! Thanks for your help! Cheers Alan!
Thanks for the feedback - appreciated. The opening track is called Sailing by Telecasted. Its part of the TH-cam Music Studio collection (at least when I edited this!) The second track is Chris Haugen and its called Snowy Peaks Part 1 againhj from the Music Studio. Hope you can track it down. Darrell
Just a note: Rothenburg odT WAS bombed during the war, but the main damage was to the eastern parts of the city and it was obviously not that badly damaged. It is a wonderful city, though maybe overloaded with tourists. Pity that you seem to have missed Dinkelsbühl on your way to Nördlingen. I hiked from Würzburg to Austria, large parts along the Romantic road and loved this slow way of experiencing the countryside. It is not for everyone, certainly not if you are pressed for time but as I am retired that was not a problem. Btw, "ö" and "o" are pronounced differently. "ö" is more like the vowel i "church" and "ü" is the German "y", like in "mystery". This will help you with names like Nördlingen and Füssen.
@@christopherx7428 thanks for your insights. We hope to be back again at some point.
Nice . What is the road # ?
Hi Stephen, we took the SR222 which starts just south of Florence near Grassina, and then switched to the 249 at Castellina to head across to San Gimignano. It was glorious but helped that it was a Sunday morning so extra quiet and no trucks!
We did pretty much exactly the same places with them back in 1991. Nothing seems to have changed much.
That's one of my favourite stretches of the SWCP. We are camping this summer at Constantine Bay.
What a great place to spend the summer... Such a fabulous beach and I can imagine it's even better on a warm summer's day!
Another great trip - thanks for sharing, really enjoyong your progress. So, did you know that that smell was seals or did you realise only when you saw them? What do seals smell like? My assumption is fishy and salty. Would be great to add smell to sight and sound.
Thanks for your feedback... We didn't know it was seals at the time but it was a very fishy smell! I think there is another similar bay on the way to St Ives and Lands End.
@DarrellMinards yes right before Godrevy Lighthouse but it's well highlighted by all the signs saying to be quiet for the seals - without which, I imagine, very few would bother looking. I missed the one you found - I will save for next time I pass through!
Not my own planning but really useful for showing the magnificent views of the region. Thank you!.
Thanks Peter...appreciate the feedback. Such great variety on this stretch.
Hi, great video and such a shame about the line in the 1st go. What was the name of the pilotage book you mentioned for the Chanel islands ? Thanks
Hi - we used the North Brittany and Channel Islands Crusing Companion by Peter and Jane Cumberlidge. It seems to be the main authority for this section. Thanks a lot for the feedback.
I would highly recommend you drive east from Kamloops to Lake Louise Alberta. From Lake Louise take the Icefields Parkway north to Jasper then continue north. The Icefields Parkway is one of the most picturesque drives in the world.
I was lucky enough to do that as a kid...and youre right its beautiful. Its part of what inspired me to make this journey for my 50th
Fantatsic trip! I am planning my own channel island adventure this summer so great to see some of the pilotage for real. I was half thinking of heading to Cherbourg first rather than a narrower tidal window at Bray, but you seem to have timed things beautifully!
Thanks - It wasnt quite as scary as we'd imagined but preparation definitely helped. I think we'll try Cherbourg this coming year as well. Fair winds
Great video. I sailed there from Portsmouth Harbour in 2021, stopping at Falmouth on the way out, then Newlyn, Helford, Fowey, Dartmouth, Studland on the way back. I think you were brave to do it in September. The advice I was given, was no later than early July. Planning going back next year.
Thanks Jeremy, glad it brought back good memories. We're certainly looking forward to a longer spell there to explore!
Hi - I really enjoyed your video. It's all very familiar as Sarah and I are also late to discovering sailing, and we did Competent Crew on the Solent, a sailing holidays flotilla (when you din't need Day Skipper) and then Day Skipper earlier this year. Again, with Sailing Holidays and out of Gouvia, so your other video contains some very familiar places! We're off to Greece again in May, and hoping to do some short charters in UK waters in the Summer. (I also go to Le Mans for the 24 every year 😀 )
Thanks for your comments. We need to very back there and explore some more now that we've got a bit of experience. Fair winds to you both
paved, all-weather road. epic...like driving a freeway
Definitely enjoyed the later stages especially Denali and Top of the World Highways.
Really enjoyed this. Just this weekend walked from Lynmouth to Barnstaple (day and a half walk onwards from Woolacombe). The climbing per day is not to be underestimated - you never get up to amazing heights but you spend the entire day going up and down, it really adds up!
That's a long way in a weekend. You're not wrong about the ups and downs! We enjoyed that stretch from Woolacombe but it ended up being a year later
excellent
Thanks Elliot
'Greatest location for a YH'. A debate in its own right. I suspect that the Glen Affric YH would have something to say about that. 3 hours walk from the nearest car park. Surrounded by Munros. No Wifi, no phone reception. Idyllic. Gairloch sands YH might lay claim to the best view. Having said that, the Tintagel one does look a great location.
Now those i need to investigate! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Darrell - glad you enjoyed it despite the rain. We did Crackington Haven to Tintagel in one great (but tough) day. The stretch to Port Isaac is also great.
You join the ranks of the crazy Germand and bonkers American! Best advice you gave me was not to rush it and we've taken that to heart. Looking forward to the next stretch in the autumn.
Good question Mark, we do use OS but on both our phones via a subscription. I use OS on my PC to plan each sector to get accurate views on the amount of climbing and length on a given day (you can set your own speed settings!) and these routes are then automatically on the OS phone app. It's saved us a couple of times including our walk from Crackington. Generally the route is very well signposted, but some sections less so and knowing via GPS that we're off track has saved us. We've never had a problem with battery and this isn't the mountains (where I'd definitely have a paper back up) and it's worked really well. You can see all traditional OS maps as well as other views. Have a great time planning your walk...we've been loving it.
I'm enjoying these posts. Have you had to use an OS map at any point? It looks like the path is very clear, well signed, and the obvious aid of the sea. As a hill walker my instinct is to always carry one, but when I do the SWCP in September, I'm tempted to not take one.

while your trip was Awsome, you could make it much interesting watching, if you included some of your interesting stopping places, and what you found to do in towns, etc, some interesting characters you encountered, , places you ate, and different menus, etc..
Thanks for the feedback Dale. That's a useful tip for the future. TBH places to eat were limited to what we could find open some of the time but definitely choice in the bigger towns. One place I'd definitely recommend is the fish and chip shop selling fried halibut in Homer. Early mornings we often struggled to find anywhere open for a cooked breakfast so be prepared with a back up especially heading u[p the Yukon.
That looked a bit up and down but some spectacular bays. Nice crockery in the tearoom!
I've spoken to some that did it all in one day and regretted it. Its definitely worth taking your time and enjoying it! And yes it was a lovely tea room and did you spot the crockery hanging on the trees :-)
Amazing, inspired by the same plans and beautiful presented vlog.
Thanks Andy, we can't wait to go back. Good luck with your passage.
Well done. Just right. I’m heading up for 3 months next week, been planning and saving and reading. Nice videos. And good music.
3 months - I'm so jealous and what a perfect time of year to be there. Thanks for the feedback.
Very enjoyable walk! Maybe will do it one day - but in warmer months! Yes I’m a wimp! Well deserved slice of cake to celebrate an important anniversary. Love to you both. xx
Thanks Ros...definitely looking forward to warmer days! Maybe not India hot though...your trip looks amazing xx
Perfect walking weather. I did it in November and that stretch along the beach at woolcombe is lovely. 👍
Yeah - it was a lovely section round to Saunton in the sunshine. Hopefully we can catch a break this month and get back there. I often think of you walking it both ways as I'm trundling along!
Very helpful video. Am planning to drive the same route later this year. Your video and narration as well as places to see along the way were very informational. (Side note... your choice of music was a bit distracting and left a little bit to be desired.) Thanks for posting!
Thanks for the feedback - definitely hope they're useful for your planning. It was a wonderful trip and worth the initial long drives to get up North. Yeah the music I couldnt remove from a previous version done only for mine and Russel's entertainment. Cant edit the music track now sadly.
a little Lenny
Speechless guy's what a amazing adventure you had , just added your trip to my bucket list
Thanks - It was an incredible part of the world. I wish I had more time there! Good luck with your planning
Nice windshield views and commentary. However I would have like some discussion on fuel stops and fueling availability spacing.
Good point. Its not bad provided you fill up in the main towns. Up through BC was easy and then again enough stops across to Whitehorse. The run up to Dawson City needed filling up before starting the Top of the World highway but from there an easy run to Tok and then onto the end. The truck was thristy (10mpg) but a big enough tank that we never got anxious about making a fuel stops. I think its harder between Sept and April but the main season is all good. Good luck
Well done both. It is an under rated section of the whole route, but not one to be underestimated. Some gruelling sections with some big climbs. But you have some amazing days ahead as well. Good luck with the remainder of the route, and everything else. All the very best and thanks for sharing.
We agree! Looking forward to starting the next section late Feb
I used to live at the Buckinghorse lodge literally across the road in a camper year round.
Really good video. It gives a very good insight of this leg of the SWCP. I haven't walked this leg yet, but other. And the video prepares me for this walk when I will be walking it some time later. Thank you and subscribed.
Thanks so much. We're hoping to start the next leg this March. I hope you enjoy your own hike.
Great video, really enjoyed it. As a West Somerset lad, a lot of the beginning route is my regular stomping ground. However, my girlfriend and I are planning to do this whole route to Woolacombe in the Summer, so it's really helpful to see how you did it and get some tips. Good luck with the rest of the path.
Thanks Tim, we're starting to build some miles up in our legs ready for the next section. Good luck on your hike.
I have to say had to trip that I hope to make some day and not too distant future but I don't love to pitch a line in and a few spots to see if I couldn't catch a fresh trout for dinner or breakfast it's all good next time see if you can get out there and do a little fishing in the in Alaska for some rock or sea bass or fresh salmon it won't disappoint 🤠
Nicely done! My little camper van is being built out right now. This adventure is on my calendar for Spring/Summer 2024. Thanks for this amazing preview!
Have fun! Its a fabulous trip and worth taking the time over. Even over 17 days it felt too rushed for us
try Circle Hot Springs or Chena Hot springs in Alaska. 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely fabulous, Well done & A Happy New Year , Best Wishes Terri & Bob
Thanks and lovely to hear from both of you
Really enjoyed your video account. I started in Minehead Mid April 22 and finished 30th May. I used the Paddy Dillon 45 day option. A fantastic walk and I would agree, if you keep it to 10-12 miles maximum it is more fun. Good luck with the rest of the trail.
Thanks Paul, we've had to delay our second week due to a knee injury for Carmen but hoping to get back to Woolacombe in the spring. Congrats on your achievement.
I so enjoyed this video series. My husband and I just moved to Maine after 12 years in Seward. We did the treck across Canada to get there. I am so glad you enjoyed it.

I thought it would have been an amazing contrast to enter Anchorage, with its highways, airports, tall buildings, etc. after all that time pounding down the empty highways and past remote hamlets. It must seem astonishing to find oneself in a real city.
It was very strange and we got lost quite quickly. We were glad to get back to some wilderness
thanks for share your experience.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Dear, Would you please help me ? : Can there be 21h time difference at only 83km distance? The Bering Strait of 83 Km gathers Uelen in Siberia and Point Hope in Alaska that have 21 hours time difference th-cam.com/video/sGBcexJ8ZHA/w-d-xo.html Thanks a lot in advance !
Enjoyed all 4, Darrell. As you'll well know, among the many (many!) AlCan & Alaska travel videos only a handful are authentic enough to capture the experience as well as the views. Yours was among those special ones and they were much appreciated.
Your taste in music is NOT my taste in music. What made it necessary? The scenery doesn’t need it.
Appreciate your comment...cant please everyone for sure as everyone has their own taste in what they like. The sound without music is just a relentless road roar and rattling of the truck which was pretty tough to listen to. I'd originally made the video just for myself and my friend Russell, but when I came to edit it back I couldnt break apart the soundtrack in the editing suite. Now I'm going for a more neutral soundtrack on newer videos I'm doing.
Thanks for your video it was a nice trip down memory lane for me! In 1999 when we drove round trip from Los Angeles, Ca to the Alaskan Highway then Homer, I didn't have a digital camera or Samsung Galaxy cell phone like today, back then all of our still pictures were taken with good ol' Kodak film!
In 1999 my Wife, Daughter and I drove our new Chevy S10 with Cab over Camper, (with a street legal Honda Mini Trail 70 strapped on the front bumper), to Homer Alaska all the way up and back on the Alaskan Highway from Granada Hills, California traveling over 7000 miles total. It was a trip of a lifetime and as awesome as it was, once is enough! Maybe now in 2021 they paved the 2000 miles of dirt road that we drove on in 1999!
I loved his commentary. Short, and to the point.
