Hey everyone! This is a cover of a song that's very dear to my heart and what was part of a huge moment in my musical upbringing, upon hearing it for the first time.
That moment came to be thanks to my late Uncle Tony Addison, who would visit my family up in Yorkshire a few times each year, and would often bring a selection of AMAZING music for me and my brothers to hear through the years as we grew up. One such occasion happened when I was around 7 years old, and he brought Steve Lukather's live concert DVD from his performance on the German music TV program called 'Ohne Filter', back in '94 during the 'Candyman' album tour. One of the first tracks he put on from that show, was 'Never Walk Alone'.
If you have never seen or heard this particular rendition before, especially as a guitarist, I implore you - please watch it! I'll never forget the shiver it sent down my spine, hearing Lukather's massive and dramatic guitar tone start the song off with such grace and yet fierce execution. It quite literally struck a chord with me, that has been ringing through my life and music career ever since.
We lost my uncle Tony in 2020 to cancer, and we miss him dearly. Whenever he was around, he'd always have a cheeky comment, a wry smile, but most importantly words of support and encouragement when it came to me and my brother's respective passions for music. He was in no small part responsible for my taste in music today, and my fascination for the fusion of jazz, rock, funk, blues... The list goes on! As does my gratitude to him, and it's part of the reason I have given so much of my life to a career in music. His passion lives on in every note that my brothers, cousins and I play.
So with that in mind, I wanted to record an attempt at what is a very formative piece of music for me, and dedicate it to Tony. Not only him, but to anyone who is suffering through cancer, or if you know someone who is, or have lost someone because of it. I can imagine that is unfortunately most of you out there. Some of you will have noticed a band name in the video title rather than my own name and a 'with friends' as previously written. As it happens we have recently officially started a cover project called 'TANJent', playing tunes like the one in this video plus many more!
