Buddy's saw. Just trying to make it better. it's a clam shell design, about as homeowner as you can get. 38cc, x torq stratified engine.

1962-1963 production run. Pretty torquey saw. Runs great for the vintage.
Ported Craftsman

42cc China craftsman ported and timing advanced. This saw was a major loser when I got it, now it's actually usable. I don't have a lathe or mill so it's saddled with the horrific factory squish. Base gasket was removed.
Runs very good and strong
@@Houseworksaws thank you!
Hey Tyler, sounds good! This is Roger, formerly Tailgate Tinkerer; I decided to take that channel down and wanted to email you thanking you for all the great participation (didn't see an email on your channel). I hope you keep cutting, making content, and enjoying your saws!
That’s what I needed to know! Seems I need to get the larger air filter cover. I was watching to see how you made yours fit over the filter. Thank you
You are very welcome! However. I did do something wrong. If you read the comments, one person told me how to make it work without grinding. Be sure to read that comment, and good luck with the upgrade!
@@tylerheard1279 thank you. This is actually a revival of a project I had a while back and watched your video but didn’t have the parts. I randomly ended with the fitting that holds the round air filter and decided to look up your video again. I have several bigger saws that I use more but something about the 4600 I just like. One thing I like about it is how quiet it is. Don’t get me wrong, I love a loud obnoxious demon sounding saw but for when that isn’t practical the 4600 always shows up
@u.sonomabeach6528 mine is my current favorite. It's not crazy heavy. Runs awesome and mine is ported so it's got good power. I just wish it had an oiler that driven by the clutch drum.
@@tylerheard1279 yeah the oiler is the only negative with mine.
Ho do you port the saw
On this one it was remove the base gasket and bring the port timing on the exhaust and upper transfers up the same amount as the cylinder dropped from removing the gasket, maybe a little more. And I opened up the lower transfers some as well. Didn't do much but clean up the extra material in the intake and tried to port match as best I could. You really should have a degree wheel(I do and did use on this) but you can do a build like this by precise measurement.
You grind the ports with a rotary tool to change the timing numbers. You could probably use a round file but you would have to be really careful and it would take forever.
What port numbers did you use? Did you cut the base or just BGDelete?
Rich fife cut the base for me. I'm running a copper base gasket with about 19 thousandths squish. When I get home to my book, I'll give you the timing numbers.
I ended up 102 exhaust 125 transfers 76.5 intake. Initially it had 180 psi compression cold and dry. I suspect it's closer to 195 now but haven't checked.
Just a quick comment. I have a 5000 and the plastic filter base goes on first then you thread in the stud and makes it the right length. That way you don't have to cut the hex off.
That makes a lot more sense! Wish I had you with me when I was doing this. I works the way it is but that would have been a lot easier. Thank you
@tylerheard1279 Thank you for your video, it's nice to see info on these saws, they are very well made.
@MegaKelcat agreed! I love it. After the cylinder work, this is my favorite 50cc class saw I own.

Hello! Thank you!
piisis crap saws
Is not too bad after these basic mods. I would take it camping or cut trails with it for sure.
th-cam.com/video/qgF9kMd_HF8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=c4MO20IcvRpBJfwd Check out the timing advance performance.
Nice. Haven’t modified mine yet. Love the size/weight but not a powerhouse.
After all of these basic mods, it's noticeably stronger, and yes, it's very nice in the hand and light weight. It started harder in stock form as well. I am now a fan.
@jonathanhoekstra6174 I didn't show it, but the filter media I used is UNI sheet foam. I got it on Amazon. I used 5/8 inch, and you need to oil it with a foam filter oil.
Mantaaaappp broo
Thank you!
As a motorcycle tech I’m surprised to see. These cave man mods actually work because I see a lot of them on Japanese motorcycles and they never work they always rob power. But obviously not their totally different animals
The drive to limit emissions is really why any of this works. It would already be optimized from the factory if emissions weren't such a concern.
That’s awesome…Pat helps me so much
Hell yeah! He's always willing to help.
I see you👍🏻
Looks and sounds like she's gonna live a long time. Great Job man!
Thank you
The thing was an absolute dog beforehand. When I finally get a tiny right angle tool, I'll do more work to the upper transfers, and I think a timing advance might help as well. But for now, it's great compared to stock.
@tylerheard1279 once I button up a few more projects, I'll send you a gift...
The makita sounds like she has had some internal love! 😉
It's my favorite😁
Thats the style of filter my Echo 680 and 7310 use. I'd like to upgrade my Echo 501 to something better
I'm not super familiar with that model but I'm sure there is something you can adapt. Thanks for watching!
Is the 501 the pro version of the 4910?
@@tylerheard1279 , yes thats rite.

That is a great filter upgrade Tyler!
Thank you!
cool
Nice upgrade Tyler, I like that you were able to use stock parts from a different model! Curious how you figured this out? 😸
I didn't actually know if it would work out the way it did but I had a hunch because the CS 4600 and CS 5000 share the same chassis. You can even put a CS 5000 piston and cylinder on a CS 4600 bottom end. Thanks for watching
Great info for the Echo fans
Thank you
Have you done any mufller mud cause mine dosnt sound like this lol
Yes and ported it.

She does well.
Thank you. If I had a connection to a machinist at the time it would have been much better but I got about a 20% increase in performance.

@@tylerheard1279 That's awesome, hi neighbor :). There is a guy who does port work in East Jordan(Kevin), and one in Leslie(Joe), either could do some machining I bet. We may have talked before, I'm chipper1.
@@brettblack7049 I have spoken with Joe but he's pricey. I found a guy now. Gonna be putting out a few nice saws coming up. Where are you at in Michigan?
Great position. We can totally tell what's going on.
This was right in the middle of the trail I needed to use to cut firewood. Quick and dirty, sorry for the poor set up
Nothing better than the feeling you get from testing a saw you ported 👍👍👍
If I had a lathe it would be night and day, it's got fat squish. But it still increased almost 20%, so I'm happy.
@@tylerheard1279 yeah the stock cylinders can have the squish all loosy goosey. I just ported a Poulan 2150 34cc and the squish is real big. But with an iron horse pipe it pulls a 36" bar with a full 3/8 full chisel chain like a boss. I'm super happy with it.
@@patthesoundguy I just sold one of those in the craftsman grey. It was surprisingly torquey. That is an amazing result! Do you have a channel?
@@tylerheard1279 I do, I'll have a video with the big bar up soon. I need some better footage with it .
