As we returned to Brixham from our pelagic trip on 'Kelly's Hero', a 'Mayday' call was heard from a vessel with an engine fire. What a great six hour trip on Kelly's Hero (out of Brixham) into Lyme Bay. Great trip 'abroad' (i.e. to Somerset) this morning with a friend to see a species of Gull I've not seen before. I wasn't expecting to have such a close, intimate view. In the 1960s, the population of this species stood at around 2000. Whilst its numbers have increased since then, it remains relatively rare at 10,000. Both an adult and juvenile feature in the video. One of Europe's rarest breeding birds. A project to reintroduce the species was started in 2004 when birds were translocated from Donana NP to S'Albufera. Larger than the Eurasian Coot, you can see the red crest which gives them their name. A Bull and calf escaped from the adjacent farm and ran around the campsite. The farmer was summoned and with a shake of s food bucket and several shouts of "Come on Dave", the cattle were encouraged back through the hedge (although it took about 10 minutes for them to take the patch). Granddad duties today and I treated my Grandson to a boat trip - his face when he saw his first Dolphin is already a treasured memory.
